Mitigating The Risk: Identifying Strategic University Partnerships For Compliance Tracking Of Research Data And Publications, Andrea Payant, Betty Rozum, Liz Woolcott

Library Faculty & Staff Publications

As international efforts to develop guidelines for data management emerge, the need for monitoring data deposit compliance increases. Utah State University has a team of university administrators, IT specialists, and librarians that addresses research data management issues. They developed a process to receive reports from faculty with successful grants that ultimately allows creation of records for data. Research grants are tracked though all stages and information about data and publications shared publicly on platforms capable of contributing scholarly work to research outputs aggregators (such as Share) and also to public facing bibliographic aggregators like Worldcat.

Something To Talk About: Re-Thinking Conversations On Research Culture In Canadian Academic Libraries, Heidi Lm Jacobs, Selinda Adelle Berg, Dayna Cornwall

Selinda Adelle Berg

As Canadian academic librarians have experienced an increasing presence in faculty associations and unions, expectations of librarian scholarship and research have increased as well. However, literature from the past several decades on academic librarianship and scholarship focuses heavily on obstacles faced by librarians in their research endeavours, which suggests that the research environment at many academic libraries has stalled. Though many have called for the development of a research culture, little has been said regarding how the profession might go about encouraging this development, and conversations often become mired in the contemplation of obstacles. As a way to move forward, …

Not On The Same Page: Undergraduates’ Information Retrieval In Electronic And Print Books, Selinda Adelle Berg, Kristin Hoffmann, Diane Dawson

Selinda Adelle Berg

Academic libraries are increasingly collecting e-books, but little research has investigated how students use e-books compared to print texts. This study used a prompted think-aloud method to gain an understanding of the information retrieval behavior of students in both formats. Qualitative analysis identified themes that will inform instruction and collection practices.

Gathering The Needles: Evaluating The Impact Of Gold Open Access Content With Traditional Subscription Journals, Alison Bobal, Jill Emery

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

Utilizing the Project COUNTER Release 4 JR1-GOA report, two librarians explore these data in comparison to journal package subscriptions represented via the JR1 reports. This paper outlines the methodology and study undertaken at the Portland State University Library and the University of Nebraska Medical Center Library using these reports for the first time. The initial outcomes of the study are provided in various Tables for 2014 and 2015. The intent of the study was to provide both institutions with a baseline from which to do further study. In addition, some ideas are given for how these reports can be used …

In countries such as China, social media has gained momentum in the recent years, and particularly in colleges and libraries.

This poster first investigates social media's presences and applications especially in university libraries in the U.S. and in China. The two countries use different social media apps such as WeChat, Facebook, Twitter, Weibo and Blog. It then focuses on a case study …

Much More Than Storage: Re-Positioning The Repository As A Cornerstone Of Campus Collaboration, Amanda Makula, Connie Ghinazzi

Library and Information Science: Faculty Scholarship & Creative Works

“Repository” belies the dynamic potential of the IR. Much more than a publishing mechanism for campus scholarship and an archive of college history, it is an opportunity to partner with nearly every entity across campus in order to advance the institution’s mission and goals, to build community by uniting disparate groups around a common purpose, and to call attention to the library’s unique ability to facilitate campus-wide collaboration. More specifically, the IR can play an important role in recruiting new students, strengthening institutional engagement among alumni, enhancing partnerships with the surrounding community, and more. But to come to fruition, these …

The Effects Of Labyrinth Walking In An Academic Library.Pdf, Donna M. Zucker Rn, Phd, Faan, Jeung Choi, Matthew N. Cook, Janet Brennan Croft

Donna M. Zucker

The purpose of this study was to determine if labyrinth
walking in an academic library would reduce library user stress
and promote relaxation. A non- equivalent control group design
was employed. Systolic blood pressure was significant for time effect
(effect size of .136, and power .721). Pulse rate was significant for
time effect (effect size 0.93, and power .507). Satisfaction survey
results demonstrated increased satisfaction after labyrinth walking.
Data from this pilot will form the basis of a larger scale study to
determine the effect of labyrinth walking on stress particularly in
high-stress learning environments.

3d Printing: A New Dimension In Service, Steven W. Pryor

Steven Pryor

Libraries provide resources for not only for consuming information, but also generating new information and research. In addition to books and academic journals, we traditionally provide creation tools such as computers, (2D) printers, and copy machines. Sometimes, the product of one’s research may be a physical artifact such as a sculpture, a prototype device, or a biological model. The recent decrease in the cost of 3D printing technology makes it possible for libraries to begin providing this service as well, giving all students the opportunity to familiarize themselves with a burgeoning trend in nearly every field of study and professional …

The Library As Publishing House, James Day, Anne Marie Casey, Chip Wolfe Apr 2016

The Library As Publishing House, James Day, Anne Marie Casey, Chip Wolfe

James M. Day

The academic library has taken on the new role of institutional publishing house, using institutional repository (IR) services to enable journal publishing and manage conference planning. Librarians taking on this new role as publisher must know the journal publishing work flow, including online article submission, peer review, publishing, marketing, and assessment. They must understand international identifiers such as the electronic International Standard Serial Number (eISSN) and Digital Object Identifier (DOI). To manage conference planning functions, librarians need to understand event functions such as presentation submission, program scheduling, registration and third-party payment systems, proceedings publishing, and archiving. In general, they need …

The Influence Of The Online Availability Of Usgs Topographic Maps On Weeding Decisions In Academic Libraries, Cheri A. Folkner, Mary C. Aagard

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study looked at the degree to which the online availability of U.S. Geological Survey historical topographic maps affects academic libraries’ decisions to withdraw the print versions of those maps. Other factors in making the decisions, such as usage, user preferences, support of academic programs, user discovery, shelving location, and printing options, were also investigated. Results show that while in 40% of the cases the online USGS historical topographic maps influenced the decision to weed, the need for space was the overwhelming driver of print USGS topographic map collection weeding within the past ten years.

Understanding Academic Patrons’ Data Needs Through Virtual Reference Transcripts: Preliminary Findings From New York University Libraries, Margaret Smith, Jill Conte, Samantha Guss

University Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

New York University (NYU) Libraries has an extremely high-volume chat reference service. This popularity presents a unique opportunity for gaining insight into library patrons’ conceptualizations of their data reference needs and how these needs are changing. Through analysis of three years’ worth of chat transcripts, we began to explore user needs and familiarity related to locating secondary data and statistics, performing data analysis, and using existing data services. Ultimately, we focused our analysis on requests for census data. This article discusses, in detail, the methods, preliminary results, limitations, and proposed next steps of our investigation. Our final goal is to …

A Survey Of Children’S And Young Adult Literature Collections In Academic Libraries Of Christian Higher Education, Shan Martinez, Melissa D. Atkinson

Library Research and Publications

Children's and young adult literature collections have an important place in an academic library. Most often, these collections go unnoticed by many in academia, who may regard children's literature as irrelevant to the mission of the academic library. In reality, these important collections support institutional curriculum and include interdisciplinary resources used in many academic departments. Findings are reported of a survey conducted of private Christian colleges and universities regarding their management of children's and young adult literature collections which seeks to identify current practices and procedures being utilized. Results from the survey highlight use, promotion, and management.
