Pieces Of The Whole: Using The Research Process To Integrate Data Management And Information Literacy Skills, Patricia Condon, Megan Bresnahan, Eugenia Opuda

Faculty Publications

The research process is naturally embraced as part of the academic curriculum in higher education. Graduate students write theses and dissertations based on their original scholarships, undergraduate students produce papers for courses and work in labs or in the field, and both participate in faculty-led research projects. The research process is tackled holistically through coursework, yet when library instructors are invited to teach students about information literacy and research data management topics, these may be presented as tangential to or mistimed with other course content and learning activities. In this chapter, the authors present a comprehensive, student-centered model for teaching …

This exploratory study investigated the teaching practices of social science instructors at the University of New Hampshire who engage with undergraduate students using quantitative data in the classroom. The participants interviewed teach both general and discipline-specific data concepts as academic, work, and life skills. Primary challenges discussed by the participants that students face in engaging with these topics are understanding math and statistical concepts, learning new software and computing skills, limited prior exposure to data, and lack of retention of content from earlier courses. Participants addressed challenges in several ways in order to lower barriers to learning, including finding, vetting, …

Demystifying The Scholarly Publishing Landscape, Eleta Exline, Emily Poworoznek, Patricia Condon

University Library Scholarship

The scholarly publishing landscape has grown exponentially in size, scope and complexity within the last decade. Since the number and type of publishing outlets have exploded, researchers now need to consider practical and ethical issues such as predatory journals, open access, preprints, publishing data and sponsor obligations when making publication decisions. Further, these issues may be compounded by interdisciplinary research collaborations. Presenters will provide an overview of the contemporary scholarly publishing landscape and the different components. They will also help researchers identify key questions to ask during different stages of the research process, highlight differences that may bear on interdisciplinary …

Rightsizing Project Management For Libraries, Valerie L. Harper

University Library Scholarship

Project management is a current topic in management, and project management offices are springing up in many organizations. Libraries may not need a project management office, but adoption of project management techniques, rightsized for library needs, can focus scope, define and organize tasks, and manage resources for many kinds of projects. The University of New Hampshire Library has implemented selected aspects of project management and is learning where these principles can be applied most effectively for successful projects. This paper describes UNH’s use of selected project management techniques and tools in a major collection integration and relocation project.
