Spatially Explicit Data: Stewardship And Ethical Challenges In Science, Joel N. Hartter, Sadie J. Ryan, Catrina A. Mackenzie, John N. Parker, Carly A. Strasser

Geography

Scholarly communication is at an unprecedented turning point created in part by the increasing saliency of data stewardship and data sharing. Formal data management plans represent a new emphasis in research, enabling access to data at higher volumes and more quickly, and the potential for replication and augmentation of existing research. Data sharing has recently transformed the practice, scope, content, and applicability of research in several disciplines, in particular in relation to spatially specific data. This lends exciting potentiality, but the most effective ways in which to implement such changes, particularly for disciplines involving human subjects and other sensitive information, …

Good, Bad, Or Biased? Using Best Practices To Improve The Quality Of Your Survey Questions, Eleta Exline Apr 2013

Good, Bad, Or Biased? Using Best Practices To Improve The Quality Of Your Survey Questions, Eleta Exline

University Library Scholarship

Surveys can be an effective tool for gathering information from library users and assessing library services, yet the quality of the survey questions can make all the difference between a survey that is completed and one that is abandoned in indifference or frustration. The increased emphasis on user informed library assessment and the availability of free online survey tools combine to make the use of surveys very popular in libraries, but inexperienced survey writers are not typically aware of best practices in the social sciences for the format and syntax of survey question and response options. These widely used best …

Information Literacy Plans: Does Your Law Library Need One?, Judith Gire Feb 2010

Information Literacy Plans: Does Your Law Library Need One?, Judith Gire

Law Faculty Scholarship

[Excerpt] "Although information literacy plans were initiated by and for academe, there is no reason they will not work in any law library. Information literacy is about preparing patrons with the skills necessary to locate, evaluate, and effectively use information throughout their lives, including their lives in law firms, corporations, government agencies and courts, as well as law schools. An institutional information literacy plan makes perfect sense for any law library in the business of equipping patrons to manage the information age like pros regardless of whether those patrons are law clerks, associates, partners, judges, or law students. And isn’t …

Working Together: A Literature Review Of Campus Information Technology Partnerships, Eleta Exline May 2009

Working Together: A Literature Review Of Campus Information Technology Partnerships, Eleta Exline

University Library Scholarship

This article reviews the recent literature about the essential but often uneasy alliances made between content experts (archivists and librarians) and technology experts. Differing professional cultures, misunderstandings of one another, limited abilities to envision change, and lack of support from top-level administrators are the most often cited reasons for the persistent difficulty in working together. Failure to collaborate may result in the marginalization or exclusion of content experts from projects where their professional skills are most needed. In spite of these problems, successful models for working together do exist. True collaborations are mutually beneficial, open opportunities for continuing relationships, and …

Metadata Made Simple, Eleta Exline May 2008

Metadata Made Simple, Eleta Exline

University Library Scholarship

Metadata schemes come in a dizzying array of shapes, sizes, formats, and purposes, from the refreshingly simple, to the incomprehensibly complex, and each with its own acronym. This diversity can at first make metadata cataloging seem overwhelming and foreign, but in practice is can be quite simple and surprisingly familiar. In this session we will review basic metadata concepts, overview common schemes, discuss how new schemes relate to standard library cataloging practices, and how they are used to foster collaboration, sharing, and long-term collection management.

The presentation was delivered at the New Hampshire Library Association Spring Conference, Innovate in ‘08: …

Knowledge Organization, Sherry L. Vellucci Jan 2008

Knowledge Organization, Sherry L. Vellucci

University Library Scholarship

Since Svenonius analyzed the research base in bibliographic control in 1990, the intervening years have seen major shifts in the focus of information organization in academic libraries. New technologies continue to reshape the nature and content of catalogs, stretch the boundaries of classification research, and provide new alternatives for the organization of information. Research studies have rigorously analyzed the structure of the Anglo- American Cataloguing Rules using entity-relationship modeling and expanded on the bibliographic and authority relationship research to develop new data models (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records [FRBR] and Functional Requirements and Numbering of Authority Records [FRANAR]). Applied research …

Lexis V. Westlaw For Research - Better, Different, Or Same And The Qwerty Effect?, Jon R. Cavicchi

Law Faculty Scholarship

There are synchronistic moments when in the process of writing. While contemplating this article, an email message made its way to my desk, past Pierce Law Center's spam firewall with the following subject line: "Pepsi v. Coke-Tell Us--Get $10." Do IP researchers choose Lexis or Westlaw justified by taste? Surely you jest, some voice said to me. Repressing this message, I proceeded to compare platform content, perform literature searches, and poll students and IP professors.

Yet another synchronistic moment came as the email from those taking the poll steamed into my email. Many IP professors indicated that they made the …

Keeping Up To Date With Ip News Services And Blogs: Drowning In A Sea Of Sameness?, Jon R. Cavicchi

Law Faculty Scholarship

It seems like so many IP related Websites you visit invite you to join their free email list to keep you up to date. These sources span the spectrum from free, to low fee to premium pricing. With all of this information overload and choices, how do you differentiate and choose news sources?

The goals of this article are twofold. Goal one is to present a survey of types and categories of IP news tools available to IP researchers. Since …

Secondary Sources: Top Ten, Susan Drisko Zago Mar 2005

Secondary Sources: Top Ten, Susan Drisko Zago

Law Faculty Scholarship

Secondary sources are a legal researcher's best friend. They are a great place to begin researching a new topic as they provide a framework for understanding the subject. Not only will a good secondary source provide researchers with a way of approaching the topic, but it will also introduce beginning researchers to the language of the subject. Secondary sources also contain expert analysis, references to primary law such as cases, statutes, and regulations, and will also include such other resources as governmental reports, statistics, and other secondary sources. While secondary sources are an incredibly valuable research tool, they can offer …

Linking Of Errata: Current Practices In Online Physical Sciences Journals, Emily L. Poworoznek Oct 2003

Linking Of Errata: Current Practices In Online Physical Sciences Journals, Emily L. Poworoznek

University Library Scholarship

Reader awareness of article corrections can be of critical importance in the physical and biomedical sciences. Comparison of errata and corrigenda in online versions of high-impact physical sciences journals across titles and publishers yielded surprising variability. Of 44 online journals surveyed, 14 had no links between original articles and later corrections. When present, hyperlinks between articles and errata showed patterns in presentation style, but lacked consistency. Variability in the presentation, linking, and availability of online errata indicates that practices are not evenly developed across the field. Comparison of finding tools showed excellent coverage of errata by Science Citation Index, lack …
