Championing information literacy has long been the mission of university librarians. When our University chose “Cultivating a Community of Research and Scholarship” as the focus of our Quality Enhancement Plan the Library was invited to join two interdisciplinary course development teams. Librarians collaborated with faculty from various academic departments to design two introductory research courses. These sequential courses lay the foundation of information literacy that springboards students to higher level research.

A library construction project led our library’s Science & Engineering Department to take on a massive evaluation of the entire science print collection and reduce the collection footprint by at least 36% within a 12 month period. In order to improve access, reduce the footprint, strengthen the robustness of our collection, and complete the project in an effective and timely manner, a methodology of how to choose, select, evaluate, and move the entire collection of over 360,000 items had to be established and vetted. In fall 2017, we initiated a migration of the University of Western Ontario’s 32 library-hosted journals from the bepress Digital Commons platform to the Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform. This was a response to concerns expressed by librarians and journal editors regarding potential implications of Elsevier’s August 2017 acquisition of bepress, including the possibility that Elsevier might place ads on their journal pages or increase fees for journal-hosting services. Our goal was to mitigate those concerns by ensuring that Western Libraries’ journal platform remained as open and community-driven as possible. In 2015, the Libraries began scanning theses and dissertations that were housed in our offsite storage facility. Many of these were single copies that were not held by any other library in the world, so we have insured their long term preservation in both print and electronic forms. We began scanning theses and dissertations in a then-cramped Gunnin Architecture Library, and are now scanning theses and dissertations housed in Cooper. The digitization process results in the removal of the circulating copies from Cooper and Gunnin, the creation of an electronic copy that is accessible anywhere on campus, and one non-circulating …

Since we have shifted most of our serial subscriptions from print to digital format, our students encounter “scientific journals” as abstractions, not as the tangible objects familiar to their instructors. Furthermore, since students interact with journals via bibliographic databases, they lose access to visual cues indicating the nature of individual works. I presented two learning activities to early career undergraduate science students. The first introduced them to different online manifestations of the same issue of a scientific journal, and prompted them to consider how each format meets specific information needs. At Minnesota State University, Mankato, we’ve created a tool to provide journal collection analysis and evaluation (JCAE) reports which bring together a wide variety of data in one place. Clemson University and the U.S. National Park Service (NPS) have collaborated since 2010 to develop the Open Parks Network, an open repository of over 230,000 digital objects and metadata records chronicling the diverse cultural and natural history of our nation’s parks, historic sites, and other protected areas. Authority control provided by Digital Commons is basic. Other than author names, Digital Commons does not provide much in the way of authority control for other fields, such as faculty advisor/mentor names or department names. Standardizing name fields has several benefits, not least of which is the increased precision of reports that institutions can create to highlight the impact of faculty mentorship activities as well as the scholarship output of departmental entities on campus. In addition we are able to save our students $2,000 - $3,000 dollars over the course of their education. While evidence continues to build that information literacy (IL) is taught across university and college curricula at all student levels (Junsbai, Lowe & Tagge, 2016), challenges connecting IL to those curricula in meaningful ways persist (Julien, Gross, & Latham, 2018; Klomsri & Tedre, 2016; Bombaro 2013). By making digital collections available online, scholarship is made more widely known. This workshop covers the process of completing successful digitization projects.
