Cataloging And Interlibrary Loan: Cross Sections In Service, Presley Dyer May 2023

Cataloging And Interlibrary Loan: Cross Sections In Service, Presley Dyer

OVGTSL 2023: Ongoing Challenges, Creative Solutions

Cataloging and Interlibrary Loan? Together? That's an interesting combo. After undergoing departmental reconstruction, Tennessee State University Library did exactly that. By combining two services that were often not housed together, new findings and issues emerged, allowing Cataloging to use unfilled ILL requests as a foundation for cleaning up the catalog and verifying its WorldCat holdings. Such findings have also ensured better ILL fill-rate accuracy and discovery. Most importantly, this presentation showcases how both services check and balance each other with outcomes worth paying attention to and solving together in a new workflow.

Looking Through The Prism: Changing From Collection Development To Collection Strategy, Catherine Seago May 2023

Looking Through The Prism: Changing From Collection Development To Collection Strategy, Catherine Seago

OVGTSL 2023: Ongoing Challenges, Creative Solutions

The University of Kentucky has long seen itself as the flagship University of the state and its Libraries have a collection development policy geared toward just in case collections and trying to be comprehensive in a world deluged with information and data. With all the changes in terms of moving instruction more online, budget challenges, and collecting more perspectives and viewpoints (DEI), the University of Kentucky is shifting towards a model of collection strategy based on core values and the mission of the Libraries and Institution. This shift affects how Acquisitions manages the budget and handles requests from users and …

Time To Get Technical About Technical Services: Reorganizing Technical Services At Bowling Green State University, Patricia Falk May 2023

Time To Get Technical About Technical Services: Reorganizing Technical Services At Bowling Green State University, Patricia Falk

OVGTSL 2023: Ongoing Challenges, Creative Solutions

Technical Services in libraries has been undergoing changes in the past ten years and Bowling Green State University (BGSU) is no exception. Changes in technology, processes, and attrition in staffing have been just a few of the reasons for this significant change. University Libraries (UL) at BGSU has recently made a change in its organizational structure that has been affected by some of these factors. Previously, our Technical Services area included numerous classified staff catalogers, a head of cataloging, head of serials, head of acquisitions, an e-resources librarian, and several other support staff members to assist with processing and cataloging …

Training Buffet: Self-Service Acquisitions Training For Librarians And Staff, Cara Calabrese, Ginny Boehme May 2023

Training Buffet: Self-Service Acquisitions Training For Librarians And Staff, Cara Calabrese, Ginny Boehme

OVGTSL 2023: Ongoing Challenges, Creative Solutions

While acquisitions workflows and tools have updated over the years, our training methods have seemingly not evolved with the same speed. At ALA Annual there were a few conversations about teaching and training new acquisitions staff. Many emphasized that learning on the job was one of the best tools, and many of our colleagues have had success with implementing asynchronous instructional materials. For example, after a colleague was able to develop a copyright course, she was then able to turn her attention to other pressing tasks. Why can't we do the same for acquisitions?

In 2022, Acquisitions partnered with Instruction …

(Closing Keynote) A New Read Deal, Aj Boston

OVGTSL 2023: Ongoing Challenges, Creative Solutions

The time to re-shape how libraries subscribe to e-journals is here. With the Big Deal out and the Nelson Memo in, libraries should re-evaluate how we gain value on behalf of those within our institutions and ensure equity of access for those outside our institutions. In this keynote, Boston will outline an understanding of the present moment and propose a path for what might come next in library-publisher negotiations.

Forgoing The "Rule Of Five" : Fair Use Analysis In Interlibrary Loan And Collection Development, Linda Sizemore, Ashley Cole May 2023

Forgoing The "Rule Of Five" : Fair Use Analysis In Interlibrary Loan And Collection Development, Linda Sizemore, Ashley Cole

OVGTSL 2023: Ongoing Challenges, Creative Solutions

Are you being bogged down by copyright? Are you getting all the access you deserve? Eastern Kentucky University Libraries recently developed and implemented a new copyright policy for interlibrary loan that forgoes the outdated CONTU Guidelines or "Rule of Five" to more closely comply with Copyright Law and leverage Fair Use.

In this session, the presenters will discuss the inspiration behind abandoning CONTU, the process for obtaining approval from library and university stakeholders, and the impact of a new copyright policy on interlibrary loan workflows and collection development decisions. Participants will also engage in a discussion of the opportunities and …

Authority Control: It's Not Just For Catalogers, Carl Horne May 2023

Authority Control: It's Not Just For Catalogers, Carl Horne

OVGTSL 2023: Ongoing Challenges, Creative Solutions

This presentation will discuss the importance of authority control of access points in the library's online catalog. Authority control, by means of a file of authority records, is the linchpin of a well-ordered catalog - it is the means of creating and maintaining standardized access points throughout the file of bibliographic records. It is this good order that makes searching in the catalog efficient. The importance of authority control is a matter that Technical Services, and especially catalogers, need to impress on public services and other librarians across the organization, because non-catalogers sometimes view authority work as a luxury, or …

Patron Driven Dei Acquisitions: Using Education Students And The Diverse Book Finder To Diversify A Children's Picture Book Collection, Mitchell Scott

OVGTSL 2023: Ongoing Challenges, Creative Solutions

In Fall 2022, the IU Southeast Library won an institutional Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion grant to conduct research on a patron driven acquisitions project carried out in a 300-level education course for preservice learning teachers. Leveraging the grant funds and the objectives of the 300-level course, we embedded an acquisition project into the course that used the Diverse Book Finder (DBF) as a teaching and selection tool. 29 students enrolled in the course were tasked with using the Diverse Book Finder to select 5 picture books that would be purchased and added to the library collection. This session will cover …

An Odyssey: Merging Two Interlibrary Loan Departments Into One (Lighting Talk), Courtney Taulbee, Amanda Williams

OVGTSL 2023: Ongoing Challenges, Creative Solutions

Lightning Round #2

During the 2021/2022 fiscal year, the University of Kentucky Libraries decided to take the opportunity to make service updates while workflow was altered or restricted by the pandemic. The Main Campus and Medical Center Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery services at the University of Kentucky Libraries merged in order to streamline services and resources for both our patrons and staff. Having assessed this idea in the past, it was determined that this would be a suitable time to implement this change. Some of the highlights include merging OCLC symbols, reorganizing staff responsibilities and workflow, centralizing the patron interface, and …

Collection Management For Beginners: What I Did Not Learn In Library School, Melissa Brooks

OVGTSL 2023: Ongoing Challenges, Creative Solutions

It's true that library school provides a valuable foundation to prepare one for work experience; however, certain lessons can only be learned on the job - often at the most inopportune moments. This presentation will explore collection management lessons learned - at rapid speed - following the retirement of the Collection Management Librarian after 35 years at the University of Southern Mississippi. Topics covered include negotiating licensing agreements, working with procurement and legal, managing budgets and identifying budget savings, and working with university departments, library liaisons, and vendors to get the job done.

Crystal and Beth will share and explain workflows they have developed that streamline their from-ordered-to-shelf processes and keep all affiliated staff aware of issues or idiosyncrasies in the areas of ordering, cataloging, and weeding; provide an overview of the micro training they implemented to bring non-cataloging staff up to speed on understanding and interpreting bibliographic data as presented in …

Implementing Universal Design Of Instruction In Information Literacy (And Almost Anything Else): The Success Of Our Students Depends On It., Peter R. Dean Mar 2023

Implementing Universal Design Of Instruction In Information Literacy (And Almost Anything Else): The Success Of Our Students Depends On It., Peter R. Dean

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

This proposal focuses on the importance of universal design when teaching either one-shot library instruction or semester long information literacy courses. This presentation will discuss how all students can benefit from a course that is barrier-free to students who have already self-disclosed as students with disabilites.

This presentation also will discuss the intense reluctance of students with disabilities to self-disclose at the college level. And how some students may not even be aware of the fact that they have a learning disability—making it even more importance to implement (and hence include) universal design principles into your teaching methodologies.

In this …

Cu Anschutz Digital Collections Migration: From Dspace To Hyku, Raven Morrigan Nov 2022

Cu Anschutz Digital Collections Migration: From Dspace To Hyku, Raven Morrigan

Medical Institutional Repositories in Libraries (MIRL)

Strauss Library at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus was part of the regional group of repositories called Mountain Scholar using DSpace when the lead for Mountain Scholar, Colorado State University (CSU), announced that they could no longer afford to support the Mountain Scholar instance. All the libraries currently part of Mountain Scholar had to decide whether to migrate to ContentDM with CSU or strike out on their own. Strauss Library considered our options, and with University of Colorado Boulder using Samvera, decided to pursue migrating to Samvera. The library completed the migration to Hyku, an extension of Samvera, …

Leveraging Ir Materials For Pre- And Post-Conference Attendance, Amanda Schwartz Nov 2022

Leveraging Ir Materials For Pre- And Post-Conference Attendance, Amanda Schwartz

Medical Institutional Repositories in Libraries (MIRL)

This presentation examines the process of building a conference collection on Digital Commons with a discussion on stakeholder collaboration, collection architecture, and promotion, and reciprocal benefit to both scholars and repository managers.

Conference collections enhance attendees' experiences by creating a live archive of conference materials, viewable both during and after the event. Collections provide meaningful metrics for interactions with conference materials, which exist as grey literature that may otherwise go unseen by wider audiences. Building conference collections vary in time and complexity, based on stakeholder needs and overall vision for the conference and its attendees. Creating conference collections that are …

From Digital Commons To Alma/Primo: Expanding Readership For Doctor Of Nursing Practice Projects, Sara Hoover Nov 2022

From Digital Commons To Alma/Primo: Expanding Readership For Doctor Of Nursing Practice Projects, Sara Hoover

Medical Institutional Repositories in Libraries (MIRL)

In 2017 the Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library partnered with The George Washington University School of Nursing to create a permanent digital archive for their Doctor of Nursing Practice project collection in our instance of Digital Commons. DNP projects are a unique type of content because they provide important research about nursing practices, but often go unpublished elsewhere. The GW DNP collection now contains over 120 items that have been downloaded over 95,000 times and therefore we were eager to explore additional avenues for disseminating this content beyond our IR and its subsequent indexing platforms. In 2018 our library migrated to …

Dashboard Confessional: Moving Behind-The-Scenes Metrics To The Spotlight, Steven Moore

Medical Institutional Repositories in Libraries (MIRL)

Now in its fourth year as an institutional repository, Henry Ford Health's Scholarly Commons has hit its stride, gaining more internal and external readers than ever before. This spring I created and executed a marketing campaign to showcase to Henry Ford Health medical education and hospital leadership the tools in Scholarly Commons that are available to track scholarly activity and promote their research. A primary focus is the repository dashboard, a behind-the-scenes look at usage metrics on a specific department's authors and their works. In this lightning talk I will share my campaign strategy, the tools I used to create …

Critical Thinking In The Age Of Misinformation: Information Literacy For Citizenship, Tamra Ortgies-Young, Jennfer Lobo Meeks, Barbara Robertson

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

As recent political events across the globe have shed a light on the fragility of democratic values, the role of the University in creating a framework for civic education becomes more urgent. Informed, caring and engaged citizenry must be a goal of higher education. Students currently face the emergence of faulty types of information - such as misinformation and disinformation, which undermines the notion of collective or public inquiry, not only within universities, but also within society as a whole. This challenge must be acknowledged and addressed by academic institutions.

Session presenters will provide an overview of their work, “Critical …

Leveling Up, Nearly Falling, & Getting Back On The Ladder: Differentiating Library Research, Apa & Endnote Instruction For Even More Online Students While Not Hurting Yourself In The Process, Josette M. Kubicki

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Note to reviewers: This proposal is for a presentation that builds on what I meant to present at the 2021 conference. Due to a storm, a black-out occurred, and I couldn’t get back online in time to present most of it because my computer was so slow. The GICOIL moderator kindly offered me a break-out room at the end of the day, but only two people showed up, and an informal conversation was more suited. This proposal expands on that presentation and elaborates on what I did this year. I have a much faster computer now and will log in …
