Under this three-year project, funded in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), libraries will collaborate to make decisions about the storage, retention, and preservation of print materials (both books and journals) as well as look for ways to integrate digital editions into a state-wide catalog. This will help alleviate space concerns while ensuring that users continue to have equal or greater access to the information. The project’s goals are: To develop a strategy for a statewide, multi-type library program for managing, storing and preserving print collections among public and private institutions to achieve greater efficiencies and …

The Singapore Management University started implementing a new solution for Integrated Research Information System (IRIS) in April 2014. Project background and some success factors is covered. IRIS would replace existing silo in-house systems. The key objective of IRIS is to have one system that takes care of ethics, research project management, grant management, publications and reporting. During the IRIS project implementation, the tasks performed included mapping of existing fields to the new IRIS and loading of existing data to IRIS test system. New workflows and some re-configuration of the default system were proposed.

The SMU librarians performed a skit in celebration of Open Access Week. The skit entitled "The Life of Pi: A Paper Born in SMU" tells the story of an original manuscript’s journey to get accepted in a journal, finally getting published in an open access journal and depositing an appropriate version in the institutional repository. The Library also wanted the research data to be deposited. Done with Singapore flavour using some Singlish, the skit was performed on 28 October at a function for faculty in the Li Ka Shing Library at the Singapore Management University. The Singapore Management University (SMU) Library was tasked with documenting the early history of SMU by the chairman of its board of trustees. An oral history project to interview the pioneers involved in the formation of the university began in 2011. The project team included the Library, the Information Technology department, and a researcher/interviewer who was familiar with SMU. It was a steep learning curve for the team. As they conducted and processed the interviews, they learned about and made decisions on interviewing, recording, transcribing, storage, website design, discoverability, usability, and sustainability. The resulting oral history website presents the interviews …

Creating A Culture Of Meaningful Evaluation In Public Libraries: Moving Beyond Quantitative Metrics, Bill Irwin, Paul St-Pierre
Creating A Culture Of Meaningful Evaluation In Public Libraries: Moving Beyond Quantitative Metrics, Bill Irwin, Paul St-Pierre

The current state of practice sees public libraries, like all public institutions, enduring funding challenges within the dominant political-economic environment, which is shaped by the tenets of new public management and the neoliberal audit society. Libraries, feeling threatened and unsure about their future stability, seek new ways to demonstrate their value. However, they face institutional cultural constraints when attempting to introduce new assessment methods to meet this challenge. The new dynamics require them to go beyond output measures (counts). With research findings supported by survey and interview data from Ontario public libraries, and in agreement with the current literature on …

This paper will present a case study of how Loyola Marymount University (LMU) evaluated the information literacy component across 72 required Rhetorical Arts course sections taken by 1272 freshmen in Spring 2014. Rhetorical Arts is designed to teach students the time- honored tradition of the “good person writing and speaking well for the public good.” The course requirements (as dictated by a common syllabus) include one face-to-face librarian-led workshop, and coursework requiring students to develop a research topic, create a research diary, and create an annotated bibliography. Supporting material for students created by the library to enhance or supplement the …

"How Did We Do?": Evaluating The Instruction Program With A Senior Survey, Heather Jagman, Terry Taylor

Library instruction programs often center around reaching first year students in a required course. Predictable contact with a student pool of this size is not only an excellent foundation for consistent delivery of information literacy instruction, it can also be a valuable component of an assessment plan. Frequently, assessment focuses on learning outcomes of instruction sessions. How else might we examine the impact of instruction through our students? DePaul's Library surveyed seniors in capstone courses university-wide to gauge their perceptions of the instruction they had received over their years at the university. Their responses provided information about the reach of …

Competing Standards In The Education Of School Librarians, Audrey Church, Gail Dickinson, Nancy Everhart, Jody Howard

Education for school librarians traditionally blends elements from the fields of LIS and education. A thorough preparation in both professions is necessary since school librarians hold state teaching certification in K-12 library media. A variety of standards from professional organizations guide school librarians in performing their multi-faceted roles, and accordingly inform the curricula of school librarian preparation programs. However, the plethora of standards may actually make it more difficult to determine what standards to include in LIS curricula, and when to include them in educating future school librarians. The implications of competitive aspects of inclusion of each of these standards …
