Refugees In The News: A Representative Anecdote Of Identification/Division In Refugee Media Coverage, Sarah Steimel Jan 2009

Refugees In The News: A Representative Anecdote Of Identification/Division In Refugee Media Coverage, Sarah Steimel

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

A refugee worker conflict at the JBS Swift plant in Grand Island, Nebraska serves as a representative anecdote of the dominant media discourses about refugees in the United States. This study adopts a critical cultural perspective and applies Burke’s (1969) concepts of identification and division to the ways in which refugees are described in comparison to other immigrants in the media coverage of the conflict. These identifications and divisions generate ideologically powerful official roles for refugees in American society. This study finds that refugees, especially refugees who are also Muslim, are defined in the media coverage of the Grand Island …

Promoting Consumerism In West Germany During The Cold War: An Agency Perspective, Frauke Hachtmann Jan 2009

Promoting Consumerism In West Germany During The Cold War: An Agency Perspective, Frauke Hachtmann

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications

This historical study attempts to explore how advertising, from the perspective of the J. Walter Thompson (JWT) Agency, contributed to the development of consumerism in West Germany during the Cold War (roughly the early 1950s until the late 1980s). The article describes how West Germany rebuilt its economy and eventually developed into the largest exporting country in the world. It also illustrates how advertising as an institution contributed to a functioning consumer society and chronicles the agency’s development in the U.S. and expansion to Germany. Finally, it explores the agency’s insights into consumer behavior in West Germany during the Cold …

The program gives applicants the opportunity to do accredited university courses in the area of the humanities. I was …

Hamas Controlled Televised News Media: Counter- Peace, Allen Gnanam Jan 2009

Hamas Controlled Televised News Media: Counter- Peace, Allen Gnanam

Allen Gnanam

The hegemonic force of Hamas censored televised news media in Gaza, can not be fully comprehended and appreciated without recognizing the role of propaganda, censorship, and the historical context of the middle east. These 3 interrelated dimensions will be analyzed using functionalism, the mass society theory, the dominant ideology framework, the critical criminology framework, and the symbolic interactionist framework. Through censorship, Hamas news media outlets were able to unilaterally inject culturally relevant propaganda, into the minds of children and citizens. The hypodermic syringe model can be applied to the state controlled news media situation in Gaza, as the people of …

Summary: Israeli- Palestinian Ethnic Conflict, Allen Gnanam Jan 2009

Summary: Israeli- Palestinian Ethnic Conflict, Allen Gnanam

Allen Gnanam

The Israeli- Palestinian ethnic conflict will continue to escalate throughout both the short term and long term world future. The current and future animosity between both ethnic groups can be attributed to (a) history based accounts and religious tensions, (b) polarizing ideologies held by both sides, and (c) middle eastern resentment toward the Jewish state of Israel. History based accounts will refer to both biased historical accounts and factual historical events that have contributed to the Israeli- Palestinian ethnic conflict. Concepts such as ethnicity, nationalism, ideology, Palestinians, Israeli’s, Arabs, and religion will be conceptualized in the research paper.

Israeli- Palestinian Ethnic Conflict, Allen Gnanam

Allen Gnanam

This research paper discusses the historical, religious, and ideological factors linked to the Israeli- Palestinian ethnic conflict, and how these factors have contributed to middle eastern resentment toward the Jewish State of Israeli. The Modernist Theory, Perceptual Framework, and he Domestic Framework have been applied to the analysis of the Israeli- Palestinian ethnic conflict, in order to demonstrate the intensity of the above factors and their provocative role in the conflict. Other provocative issues that are discussed in this paper include territorial wars, ethnic nationalism, the competition for natural resources, the biased dissemination of historical text through educational institutions, and …

Undergraduate Review

Sports media is important because it shapes the perceptions, aspirations and dreams of the viewers (Angelini, 2008). It shows the viewers the skill and athletic achievement of both male and female athletes. The media allows viewers to witness the athletic prowess of their favorite athletes on TV and in print. Within sports media, the viewers are able to learn about the many different sports that are offered around the world. The viewers are able to get a sense about who the athletes are, their talents, their sport and their achievement. It is apparent that sports media has a huge impact …

Framing The Foreign Feminine: Portrayals Of Middle Eastern Women In American Television News, Marci Manley Jan 2009

Framing The Foreign Feminine: Portrayals Of Middle Eastern Women In American Television News, Marci Manley

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

This study examines whether American television news coverage uses negative agenda-setting to depict Middle Eastern women. In approaching coverage of the Middle East, one of the key issues has been the plight of Middle Eastern women in their Islamic societies. Qualitative scholarship and limited quantitative analyses of print portrayals argue that Western media depict Muslim/Middle Eastern women negatively. However, there appears to be no research documenting how American television news, neither network nor cable, portrayed these women. I conducted a content analysis of 61 news packages from ABC, CBS, and NBC along with Fox News and CNN, aired between September …

Media Subpoenas: Impact, Perception, And Legal Protection In The Changing World Of American Journalism, Ronnell Andersen Jones Jan 2009

Media Subpoenas: Impact, Perception, And Legal Protection In The Changing World Of American Journalism, Ronnell Andersen Jones

Faculty Scholarship

Forty years ago, at a time when the media were experiencing enormous professional change and a surge of subpoena activity, First Amendment scholar Vincent Blasi investigated the perceptions of members of the press and the impact of subpoenas within American newsrooms in a study that quickly came to be regarded as a watershed in media law. That empirical information is now a full generation old, and American journalism faces a new critical moment. The traditional press once again finds itself facing a surge of subpoenas and once again finds itself at a time of intense change—albeit on a different trajectory—as …

Media Framing And Policy Change After Columbine, Thomas Birkland, Regina Lawrence Dec 2008

Media Framing And Policy Change After Columbine, Thomas Birkland, Regina Lawrence

Thomas A Birkland

The 1999 Columbine school shooting incident in Colorado gained far more media attention across a broader range of issues than any school violence episode before or since. One might expect that Columbine would have had an influence on public opinion, public policy, and scholarship commensurate with the attention it gained. We find that the event did contribute in a limited but interesting way to scholarship on media framing. But the effect of Columbine on public opinion and the nature and substance of public policy was limited. Attention to school shootings peaked with Columbine, and the attention surrounding that event mostly …

"Comment Is Free, But Facts Are Sacred": User-Generated Content And Ethical Constructs At The Guardian, Jane Singer, Ian Ashman

Jane B. Singer

This case study examines how journalists at Britain’s Guardian newspaper and affiliated Web site are assessing and incorporating user-generated content in their perceptions and practices. A framework of existentialism helps highlight constructs and professional norms of interest. It is one of the first data-driven studies to explore how journalists are negotiating personal and social ethics within a digital network.

Ethnography, Jane Singer Dec 2008

Ethnography, Jane Singer

Jane B. Singer

Many qualitative studies in journalism and mass communication research draw on ethnographic methods that originated in anthropology and sociology. These methods involve studying people within their own cultural environment through intensive fieldwork; they emphasize the subjects' frames of reference and understandings of the world. This article uses a comparison between journalism and ethnographic research as a framework for highlighting common problems with manuscripts using this method. It offers veteran ethnographers' tips about what they look for in a manuscript and identifies three ethnographies that are examples of successful application of the method to topics of interest to journal readers.

Role Call: 2008 Campaign And Election Coverage On The Web Sites Of Leading U.S. Newspapers., Jane Singer

Jane B. Singer

This study explores how Web sites affiliated with leading U.S. newspapers covered the 2008 campaign and election. It traces changes over a decade in which the Internet moved from the periphery to the center of political, public, and media attention. Although a 2004 study suggested online editors were rethinking their function as information gatekeepers, this study indicates a reassertion of traditional journalistic roles despite an increase in options for user input

Campaign Design And Management, Ronald D. Smith Dec 2008

Campaign Design And Management, Ronald D. Smith

Ronald D Smith APR

The role of strategic planning in public relations is rooted in today's understanding of the profession, an understanding that can move a practitioner beyond being simply a wordsmith or organizational mouthpiece and into a seat at the management table. Practitioners skilled in strategic planning are sought out to help build relationships and solve problems.

This chapter focuses first on some definitions dealing with projects versus campaigns and then on two types of campaigns proactive or reactive. This chapter goes beyond projects, the tasks associated with public relations, such as writing effective news releases, creating an interactive Web site, or orchestrating …

Gender Mainstreaming In International News: A Case Study Of The Inter Press Service, Margaretha Geertsema Dec 2008

Gender Mainstreaming In International News: A Case Study Of The Inter Press Service, Margaretha Geertsema

Margaretha Geertsema-Sligh

From 1994 to 1999, the global news agency Inter Press Service (IPS) implemented a gender mainstreaming policy in its newsrooms. This study examined organizational changes and news coverage that IPS advocated, as well as methods employed to bring about these changes. It shows that IPS has not been able to mainstream gender into all aspects of the organization and news coverage, and it considers reasons for the lacking implementation of the policy, while documenting IPS's efforts to improve women's access and representation in international news.
