Introduction: Student Assistants (SAs) play an invaluable role at the Singapore Management University (SMU) Libraries. Investing in SAs is a win-win for both the library and students as peer-to-peer learning becomes more important. In this presentation, participants will learn how we improved the skills of the Student Assistants (SAs) in order to increase the service quality delivered at the desk and helped them acquire skills for their wider professional development. Often the first point of contact at the Library’s services desk, it is critical that SAs hired have the necessary skills and competencies needed to perform their tasks efficiently. Thus, …

Digital Science’s Dimensions has been officially launched in January 2018. At a first glance, this is an exciting development, bringing new competition to the existing field, which is dominated by Clarivate’s Web of Science and Elsevier’s Scopus. Since Dimensions is a freemium, features such as full text and citation analytics require a subscription. Prior to subscription, library typically conducts trials and thorough evaluation, measuring the value that Dimensions brings to the institution, comparing it to existing products, calculating the cost of switching, examining its features and contents, and even considering the future of the product and the company. This paper, however, …

Scholars have unprecedented access to subscription and open access (OA) content, yet figuring out how to discover and access legitimate versions of articles remains an aggravating experience for many researchers. They face authentication hoops, myriad vendor platforms with uncertain holdings, and mystifying an obscure OA source. Researchers that start with Google Scholar may bypass library authentication and face paywalls. Conversely, library discovery tools fail to expose and deliver much of the available OA content, and especially under-represent Green OA from repositories. Our panel discusses several approaches to improving access discovery by giving scholars tools to identify accessible content and using …

As the availability of open access (OA) copies continues to grow, platforms and libraries are increasingly facing the possibility of linking users to version of record copies as well as to OA but non-version of record copies of the same article. Some advocate prioritizing linking to OA copies while others argue that the version of record should be prioritized. In many cases, this is a question of whether to link to a copy that the library has licensed over the copies that are freely available; however, the same conundrum can occur with respect to publisher-hosted OA content vs. copies available …
Winning Combination For Collaboration On Plagiarism: Smu Libraries And Student Council Of Discipline (Scd), Mei Tan

Plagiarism in higher education is a reality that will not go away any time soon. In Singapore Management University (SMU) Libraries, we observed that there had been an increase in requests for plagiarism workshops in recent years. We also realised from the onset that conducting library workshops on plagiarism would not be sustainable in the long-run.

The Singapore Management University (SMU) Libraries’ have used the LEAN and Six Sigma methodologies in recent years to plan and push for continuous process improvement in their operations. In one assessment project, the Gemba-Kaizen principle from LEAN was adapted and applied to an initiative centered on assessing the library’s Lifestyle print collection. This strategy became a prime agent for change, which resulted in some marked improvements in collection management activities within the SMU Libraries. This case study at SMU Libraries will describe key principles of Gemba- Kaizen and how it was found to be a sustainable tool to drive continuous …
