Visibility, Promoting, And Marketing Of Electronic Reference Books In Academic Libraries, Viki Stoupenos, Christine E. Woods

The Southeastern Librarian

Are electronic reference books visible in academic libraries? A survey administered to librarians at colleges and universities in the southern United States is used to ascertain the presence and promotion of electronic reference books in academic libraries. Findings reveal that electronic reference books are not as visible in academic libraries (both online and in library buildings) as traditional print reference is. Librarians surveyed indicate they promote electronic reference books more than print reference books. To gain an understanding of what needs more marketing, librarians should examine usage statistics. Librarians should employ a variety of ways to market and promote electronic …

Scanning The Digital: Using Survey Data To Support Digital Scholarship Initiatives At The University Of Mississippi, Abigail Norris, Adam Clemons, Alex Watson

The Southeastern Librarian

Digital scholarship (the use of digital technology in research or teaching applications) is a new and growing field but many Mississippi libraries, including the University of Mississippi, are not officially supporting digital scholarship. To change this, librarians at the University of Mississippi sent out an online survey to faculty, staff, postdocs, and graduate students in order to gauge their interest in and experience with digital scholarship methods and tools and how the library can best support digital scholarship on campus. The results showed a wide variety of interest and expertise across several fields, mostly in the humanities, with important data …

Online Learning In Post-Covid Library Instruction: Creating A Library Skills And Orientation Blackboard Course At The University Of Mississippi, Brooke Gross

The Southeastern Librarian

This paper examines the development process of a library Blackboard course by a Research & Instruction Librarian at the University of Mississippi over the course of one summer. The Library Skills and Orientation course sought to address two issues: limited first-year instruction capabilities and underdeveloped skillsets in upper-level students. It was designed to replace first-year instruction where able and supplement subject-specific instruction where needed. Pursuing new online learning initiatives can be a tough sell, however, when many institutions are attempting to return to normal in-person routines after two years of forced virtual work due to the pandemic. This paper discusses …

Georgia’S Libraries And The Needs Of Patrons Experiencing Homelessness: An Exploratory Study, Anne Blood

The Southeastern Librarian

This paper presents a sample survey of Georgia libraries’ services for those experiencing homelessness, conducted in the spring of 2020 before COVID-19 closed libraries across the country. It examines previous research on best practices to aid those experiencing homelessness and former attempts to implement these practices. From these practices and experiences the survey questions were designed. The questions are as follows: what barriers exist, if any, at these libraries that might make it difficult for those experiencing homelessness to use library services; do these libraries follow best practices standards in their services that help all patrons feel welcome using the …
