In the last twenty years, scholars have reimagined information literacy to better address an overly saturated world of information and the growing participatory culture of Web 2.0. Outside of library and information science (LIS), researchers have promoted transliteracy—the intersection between information, visual, digital, and other literacies—to help students find and assess information. Within the LIS discipline, metaliteracy has provided a foundation to rethink information literacy frameworks, redefining students as creators who produce and share information. This book chapter describes the collaborative efforts of an academic librarian and nursing faculty in the development of a robust health sciences-focused information literacy instruction workshop. After several years of “standard” IL sessions, both the librarian and faculty wanted to create a more dynamic, active learning environment for students enrolled in the nursing research and evidence-based practice course. In addition, the author reflects on the challenges and successes of working with faculty when a nursing department is undergoing programmatic and curriculum changes.

In 2006 The Chronicle of Higher Education published an article describing a study completed by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). ETS estimated that only 13% of incoming freshman students were information literate. Studies by Mittermeyer (2005), Wassman (2000), and the Intersegmenatl Committee of the Academic Senates of the California Community Colleges (2002) confirm this diagnosis. Information literacy speaks to the skills of finding, evaluating, and presenting information. Indeed, these skills are crucial in the information age.
