During the Trump presidency, “fake news” was a term often used as a synonym for “news that comes to a conclusion that I disagree with.” The focus of this session is not fake news, but rather how to spot the news misinformation and disinformation that students are so vulnerable to. Today’s news landscape is complex and largely unregulated, and students need to learn how to critically analyze the news they receive in order to make informed decisions and participate in the sharing of information in a responsible and ethical way. With so many variables to account for in the fall, the writing and research assignments we designed for a 14-week semester with regular in-person access to campus resources may no longer be realistic or effective. Join Melissa Forbes, Director of the Writing Center and First-Year Writing, and Research & Instruction Librarians Kerri Odess-Harnish and Meggan Smith for tips on redesigning writing and research assignments to help students succeed whatever the semester looks like. A short 10-minute presentation will be followed by Q&A and open discussion.
