Variations In State Higher Education Grant Programs: Potential Reforms From A Case Study, Rachael Johnson Jan 2018

Variations In State Higher Education Grant Programs: Potential Reforms From A Case Study, Rachael Johnson

Honors Program Theses

As higher education costs continue to rise across the nation, students are increasingly needing financial assistance. State grant aid programs play a vital role for millions of students across the nation when paying for their postsecondary education. This case study looks specifically at Iowa’s, Nebraska’s, and Wisconsin’s state funded grant aid models to understand how Iowa could restructure their current grant aid program to better serve both the students and taxpayers of the state. Specifically, for Iowa’s grant aid programs, four changes are recommended.

  1. All higher education sectors should be eligible for the state’s primary grant aid program.
  2. At minimum, …

The Achievement Gap: Federal, State, Provincial And Nonprofit Websites That Publish Research Reports About The Achievement Gap In Pnla States And Provinces, Kellian Clink

Library Services Publications

The achievement gap “refers to a difference between the academic achievement of linguistic and ethnic minority students, students with disabilities, students from low socioeconomic status backgrounds, and female students, and either the mainstream student population in general or the white student population more specifically” (Odekon, 2015, p. 7). There are as many causative factors as there are rocks on a beach in Alaska. While books and articles may refer to these and act as a finding aid, I find it valuable to have a certain familiarity with federal, state, and nonprofit organizations that publish timely and authoritative research reports. These …

Teaching To Self Assess: Developing Critical Thinking Skills For Student Interpreters, Stephen Fitzmaurice Dec 2017

Teaching To Self Assess: Developing Critical Thinking Skills For Student Interpreters, Stephen Fitzmaurice

Stephen Fitzmaurice

In an effort to teach critical thinking skills to interpreting students, our
educational interpreting program has stopped providing direct feedback
on their interpreted work. We believe that independent practitioners
need to be skilled at self-assessment rather than relying on external ratings
of performance; thus, for the last 2 years, I have taught and then
graded students on the efficacy of their self-assessment of their own
work. To assess this change, I analyzed the Educational Interpreter Performance
Assessment (EIPA) ratings of students who received direct
feedback and those who learned to self-assess. The findings indicate that
the students who were taught …
