School District Performance In Erie County & Buffalo, New York: The Socio-Spatial Dimensions Of Educational Quality, Jeffrey Ewell
School District Performance In Erie County & Buffalo, New York: The Socio-Spatial Dimensions Of Educational Quality, Jeffrey Ewell
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The educational quality of Erie County and Buffalo, New York, as represented by school district performance was examined and the relationship between school district performance and the social environment was analyzed. Socioeconomic status, social stability and race were all found to be strongly correlated to school district performance. Within Erie County, Buffalo has the poorest school performance levels while Snyder and Williamsville, two high status suburban districts, have the highest school performance levels. The overall spatial pattern of school district performance based on the PEP test results for 1974 reveal a strong correspondence between school district performance and the social …

The Local Planning Boards Miss An Opportunity, Chester Smolski
The Local Planning Boards Miss An Opportunity, Chester Smolski
Smolski Texts
"Planning boards in the communities of the state have the responsibility to study, advise and recommend strategies and policies for the growth and development of their respective cities and towns. These appointed members frequently have no background on such matters and must often make decisions on which they have little understanding. This is particularly true in areas of housing where PUD, PURD, Condo, Co-op, zero lot line zoning, and a host of other acronyms and concepts sometimes defy comprehension."

High School Students' Images Of Geography: An Exploratory Analysis, Raymond Hubbard, Robert Stoddard
High School Students' Images Of Geography: An Exploratory Analysis, Raymond Hubbard, Robert Stoddard
Department of Geography: Faculty Publications
Almost since its introduction into American high schools and colleges, geography has been plagued with the problem of justifying its existence as a bona fide academic discipline. This identity problem has been attributed to a variety of circumstances and conditions, including the common explanation that geography is a virtually unbounded discipline. For many individuals this unduly amorphous characteristic is particularly burdensome when attempts are made to define the subject matter of geography. This, in turn, hampers the presentation of a clear and distinct image of the discipline to nongeographers. Closely related to the problem of geography's diverse content and delineation …

Homeless Cats And Dogs Are Suffering And Dying
Homeless Cats And Dogs Are Suffering And Dying
Close Up Reports
Last year more than 13 million homeless cats and dogs were euthanized at humane societies and municipal animal shelters. As a statistic, 13 million may be meaningless. But think of it another way. Think of the 13 million as individual animals with individual personalities--each with their own beating heart, each with their own wretched story of how they found their way to the animal shelter. Each one was an individual breathing creature whose life was ended because there was no home to go to.

Hierarchy, Systems, And Geography, Gerald R. Pitzl
Hierarchy, Systems, And Geography, Gerald R. Pitzl
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
The concept of hierarchy in geographical studies has been applied primarily to identifications of structure and not process. This limited application is partly due to the omission of the concept in attempts at applying systems theory in geographic studies. Hierarchy as an organizing and integrating concept is an essential element in systems investigations. Several philosophical dichotomies that have hampered holistic geographical research efforts are reviewed, and the concept of hierarchy in process investigations is placed within the wider realm of systems theory. Extension of the integrating nature of geography into authentic interdisciplinary studies is encouraged.

Spatial Characteristics Of Tertiary Activities In Kathmandu, Robert Stoddard
Spatial Characteristics Of Tertiary Activities In Kathmandu, Robert Stoddard
Department of Geography: Faculty Publications
How are retail establishments arranged in urban areas? Numerous urban and marketing geographers have addressed this question, and a sizeable body of literature deals with the issue. However, most studies have pertained to western cities that have large monetary flows between various sectors of a specialized economy. This study supplements the existing knowledge by examining some spatial characteristics of tertiary activities in an Asian city functioning within a more traditional economy.
Sedimentary Structures And Paleocurrents In A Flashy Channel, Kevin Bellamy
Sedimentary Structures And Paleocurrents In A Flashy Channel, Kevin Bellamy
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Highland Creek can be defined as a flashy stream on the basis of the basin and channel hydrology and hydraulics. The extremes between the low and high-flow stage are dependent on the hydro-geomorphological features of the urban environment. The peculiarities of the urban landscape, serve to differentiate Highland Creek from naturally flashy channels.
The sedimentary structures were grouped into coarse and fine facies. The deposition of material apparently occurs under progressively decreasing energy levels, during falling flow stage.
Bedform and sedimentary structure associations, and their evolution are dependent on the dynamics of the flashy channel. That is, the development of …
Changes In The Forest Composition In The Great Lakes St. Lawrence Forest Region Of Ontario And The Resultant Outbreaks Of The Spruce Budworm Choristoneura Fumiferana (Clem.), John F. Bowen
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The spruce budworm Choristoneura fumiferana Clem. is the foremost forest pest in Canada. The species is endemic to eastern North America. Since the turn of the century the insect has become a major problem in the “Great Lakes St. Lawrence Forest Region” of Ontario, an area where prior to recent times the insect did not occur in damaging numbers.
Analysis of the life cycle of the insect reveals that the only limiting factor capable of controlling outbreaks is a lack of food. The required tree species is balsam fir Abies balsama (L.) Mill. The forests of Ontario have been altered …
Regional Economic Development In Ontario: The Problems Of Both Federal And Provincial Government Involvement, John Brandon Lander
Regional Economic Development In Ontario: The Problems Of Both Federal And Provincial Government Involvement, John Brandon Lander
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Regional economic disparities have always been a topic of concern for the geographer as has the alleviation of this problem. In examining government efforts in this area, one must be aware of the parameters placed on such action by the established system of government.
Federalism, in the same way as other major forms of government, is supported by a voluminous amount of theoretical material. This literature discusses the foundations of this system of government but also delves into some of its inherent problems. Such problems have led many political scientists to advocate co-operative federalism, a more contemporary form of this …
An Investigation Of Land Prices And Related Factors In Wellington County From 1961–71, Janet Eluned Morris
An Investigation Of Land Prices And Related Factors In Wellington County From 1961–71, Janet Eluned Morris
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Factors affecting land prices in the open countryside of Wellington County from 1961–71 are investigated in this study. Land use was the major determinant of price and the significance of location, size and time varied according to land use. Soil had no effect on land prices. These factors were poor predictors of price which suggested that formation of land prices was a complicated process. The fragmentation of rural land into residential parcels from 1966–1969, combined with favourable economic conditions caused dramatic price increases for residential land and smaller increases in farm land and farm prices. The amount of rural land …

The Coteau Des Prairies: An Area Study, Orville E. Gab
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is a systematic geographical analysis of the Coteau des Prairies of eastern South Dakota. The Coteau is a flatironed-shaped plateau about 200 miles in length pointing in a northerly direction (Fig.1). The northern tip of the flatiron-shaped Coteau ends at Sargents Point, North Dakota, about 15 miles north of Marshall County, South Dakota. The heel of the flatiron or the southern edge of the Coteau des Prairies would just about follow the border between Minnehaha and Lincoln Counties of South Dakota. The eastern edge of the Coteau's extent in South Dakota parallels the Minnesota border. In Deuel County, …

The picturesque beauty of a small Midwestern town sitting amid the farmlands or ranchlands is a common image conjured up by many Americans thinking about life in rural
America. It inspires a familiar scene. A grain elevator usually breaks the skyline and is situated on the ever present railroad line. A water tower stands against the blue sky. One particular street, usually named Main, is lined on both sides with businesses and shops. This is the heart of a small town, surrounded by a body of homes, churches, a school, and a gas station or two. From the hinterland around …
