Interorganizational Considerations In Coastal Management: The 1976 California Legislative Experience, Herman L. Boschken Jan 1978

Interorganizational Considerations In Coastal Management: The 1976 California Legislative Experience, Herman L. Boschken

Herman L. Boschken

Among coastal management programs, most states have found the question of appropriate administrative structure difficult to cope with. The dilemma of decision trade-offs caused by the dual governmental needs of "efficiency" and "representation" has led to some alternative patterns of administration. For complex issues that transcend local boundaries, the choice between trade-offs means adopting either (a) some form of consolidated bureaucracy or (b) some system of concurrent jurisdictions. Both alternatives have their inherent benefits and disadvantages but, considering the degree of environmental complexity and array of competing interests involved in coastal resource use, the most appropriate administrative form would seem …

Midwestern Mosaic: A Study Of The Homogeneity Of Ethnic Populations In Omaha, Nebraska, 1880, Kathleen Louise Fimple Jan 1978

Midwestern Mosaic: A Study Of The Homogeneity Of Ethnic Populations In Omaha, Nebraska, 1880, Kathleen Louise Fimple

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The aim of this study is to delimit neighborhoods in an urban setting using the ethnic homogeneity of the population as the major criteria. The study will seek to compile data at a very large scale--i.e., city blocks or streets--and present cartographically an accurate delimitation of community and neighborhood. In addition, some analysis of the ethnic homogeneity of such areas will be carried out in order to assess the selective inclination of certain national groups to concentrate spatially. The specific study area is Omaha, Nebraska, in the year, 1880.

The Influence Of Educational Ability On Cognitive Mapping Ability: A Study Of School Children In Halifax, Nova Scotia, Gilbert Ronald Oikle Jan 1978

The Influence Of Educational Ability On Cognitive Mapping Ability: A Study Of School Children In Halifax, Nova Scotia, Gilbert Ronald Oikle

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The purpose of this thesis is to find how a child’s cognitive abilities affect his cognitive map. Most of the earlier studies concentrated on socio-economic factors as the main factors affecting cognitive mapping, either ignoring cognitive ability or giving it minor consideration. This study surveyed a group of children ages 12 to 15 years in a Junior High School in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The study revealed that cognitive ability significantly affected the forms of the cognitive maps of the students, but was not a significant factor in influencing the elements placed on the cognitive maps. Children of high achievement and …

Geographical Definition Of Mississippi Sound, Charles K. Eleuterius Jan 1978

Geographical Definition Of Mississippi Sound, Charles K. Eleuterius

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Boundaries for Mississippi Sound are determined by application of definitions, established surveying practices and observations of the physical processes of the area. U.S. Coast and Gcodetic charts 1266 (1972 edition), 1267 (1972 edition) and 1268 (1974 edition) were used in ascertaining the boundaries. These boundaries provide a formal geographical definition for Mississippi Sound.

Progress On Rock Glacier Research, John F. Shroder Jr., John R. Giardino Jan 1978

Progress On Rock Glacier Research, John F. Shroder Jr., John R. Giardino

Geography and Geology Faculty Publications

This report is an account of research progress on rock glaciers of Afghanistan, Colorado, and Utah. Because of the preliminary nature of this work, some speculation is present; nevertheless, we think there is evidence for each major, new point expressed. The main thesis of our work is that rock glaciers are polygenetic and appear to be part of a continuum of similar landforms grading morphologically and, presumably, mechanically from one type to another type.

Factors Affecting Oat Yields In East-Central South Dakota, Thomas M. Brandner Jan 1978

Factors Affecting Oat Yields In East-Central South Dakota, Thomas M. Brandner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The social and economic importance of accurate crop-climate forecasting and agricultural data acquisition has been noted. The advances in methodology to analyze the relationship, has also been touched upon. The particular problem considered in this paper is to determine what factors play a significant role in the output, of oat yields. The yields will be correlated with monthly precipitation and temperature figures and a yearly fertilizer application variable. If some of these variables are found to be significant-they can be used in an equation to help predict oat yields. It is hoped that this study will add to the knowledge …

The Lake Dakota Plain: An Area Study, Anselem H. Rumpca Jan 1978

The Lake Dakota Plain: An Area Study, Anselem H. Rumpca

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a systematic-area geographical study of an ancient glacial lake bed [sic] called the Lake Dakota Plain. Most of the Lake Dakota Plain is located in the northeastern part of South Dakota with a small area in adjacent North Dakota. The present study will be limited to that portion which lies in South Dakota. This area study is not limited to one criterion such as location, climate, or human occupance [sic]. Rather, it incorporates the sum total of all the criteria included in a systematic-regional study.

The Spatial Impress Of Capital With The Colonial State In Swaziland, With Particular Reference To The Period 1903-1914, Jonathan S. Crush Jan 1978

The Spatial Impress Of Capital With The Colonial State In Swaziland, With Particular Reference To The Period 1903-1914, Jonathan S. Crush

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Swaziland is in many ways a unique country on the African scene. The last African state to receive political independence from colonial Britain (in September, 1968), it has since been politically and socially dominated by the considerable personage of the world’s longest reigning Monarch, His Majesty King Sobhuza II. The King, with absolute sway in the traditional sphere, is also proving a considerable binding force for a Nation being atomised by the forces of westernization. The Nation, a single tribe, is a relatively small one of approximately 520,000 population in a country of just over 6400 square miles.

Process is, …

Morphology And Anatomy Of The Norwood Esker, Ontario, John Arthur Dixon Jan 1978

Morphology And Anatomy Of The Norwood Esker, Ontario, John Arthur Dixon

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Over its 25 km. length the Norwood esker traverses two morphologically different areas, a northern section of kame, and a southern section of elongated drumlins. In the north the esker consists of single and multiple ridges: where multiple, the ridges are superimposed on a lower, broader, plateau-like base. In the south a high, steep-sided single ridge is present. In both areas, where single, the ridge splits locally into two narrower ridges which region a short distance downstream.

Internally, the esker contains mostly cross-laminated sands, tough-shaped and tabular sets of cross-bedded sands and gravel, and matrix-supported sandy gravels. The cross-laminated sands …
