A Statistical Analysis Of The Residential Distribution Of Blacks In Nashville, Tennessee, Kenneth Szymanski

The purpose of the study was to explain the temporal variations of the residential distribution of Blacks in Nashville, Tennessee. A stepwise regression model revealed that Black occupancy exhibits positive relationships with substandard units and overcrowded units and an inverse relationship with average monthly rent. While the quality of housing became more equitable in the period of 1950 to 1970, overcrowding increased in severity. During this period of Black population augmentation, residential expansion took place. The United States is becoming a country of urban dwellers. Much of this urbanization is occurring outside of the legal city in what is called the urban fringe. Among the solutions advanced to deal with the problems of urban sprawl is the annexation of such areas by the central city. Before annexation can become a reality, its feasibility from a cost-revenue approach must be assessed. The fresh-water mussel industry of the Tennessee River is nearing an end. Overharvesting, habitat alterations, and pollution are the major contributors to the depletion of the mussel resource, upon which the shell industry is based. A history of unconcern by shell harvesters and weak conservation enforcement by governmental agencies, has left the major waterways of the United States nearly void of commercial clams. The lower Tennessee River presently supplies the mussel industry with nearly all the important species of mollusks. A Quantitative Analysis Of The Spatial Distribution Of Substandard Housing In Bowling Green, Kentucky, Robert Harding

The purpose of the study was to determine the degree and intensity of the factors affecting the spatial distribution of substandard housing in Bowling Green, Kentucky. A stepwise regression model revealed that straightline distance from the CBD, overcrowded units, average number of rooms per dwelling unit, renter occupancy and non-white occupancy accounted for only 37 percent of total explained variation. A filtering process based on blocks exceeding ten percent Black population was utilized to divide the universe. New analyses on Black and White sectors within the city did not increase the coefficient of determination. They did, however, reveal a great …

ABSTRACT - The concept of form in its subjective (strictly qualitative) connotations is inappropriate as the organizing principle for geographical investigations. Yet, elements identified as formal (structural/morphological) which are objectively measurable are valid for study and possible integrations toward holistic conclusions. Thus, if the form-function-process approach is to be advanced, the formal segment must be stated in a clearly determinable mode in order to allow integration.

A Computer Program For Population Analysis, W. Ralph Rice, Walter L. Manger

A computer program for population analysis has been developed that is simply written, but relatively sophisticated. It consists of three parts: computation and tabulation of data, statistical analysis and plotting. The program can be understood readily by computation center personnel and requires a minimum of modification for use in most facilities. Once the program is instituted, an instructor need only have knowledge of the format requirements to use it. Lack of a programming background need not prevent an instructor from using the computer for population analysis.

The objective of this research was to examine the North American residential preference surfaces of the six traditional regions of Canada. Each regional surface demonstrated a decided spatial regularity in preferences. This regularity was distorted somewhat by local biases and the location of the sample tested relative to the rest of the surface. There was a general tendency to rate the local area high and for preference to decline with increasing distance from the local area. In addition, each surface indicated a strong preference for the west coast here called an ‘Eden’ effect. A ridge of high desirability generally joined …

This thesis depicts in a visual format the settlement geography of early Utah.

Several topics in Utah's historical geography were mapped by conventional cartographic techniques to give an overview of processes and patterns of settlement.

This thesis points to the utility of maps in portraying information concerning settlement activity. It indicates that visual correlations enable the student to better understand settlement through spatial relationships.

Of special interest are the use of color maps, and the creation of physical relief impressions by photographically screening a raised relief map of Utah.

This study is concerned with the countryside facet of the non-resident ownership phenomenon. The utilization of spatio-temporal analysis in the research answered some of the questions that have arisen concerning the extent and trends associated with the non-resident ownership process.

Rather than employ one of the many diverse governmental definitions based on political ethnocentrism, this study made use of a three-part non-resident ownership definition based more on distance and the characteristics of the Burce County agricultural subsystem. This paper examines the travel patterns of youth and adult recreational participants from Waterloo, Ontario. Specifically, the study pertains to the travel done by these participants in Ontario, during the summer of 1972, and as such, contributes to the sparse literature available on the subject.

It is discovered, that when youth are disaggregated from the population, one is able to determine the recreation travel differences between both parties, with a high degree of accuracy. The fact that a large percent of youth and adults frequent areas of their particular choice, indicates that there must be recognizable characteristics in both parties …
