Lakeside Homes Around Tuttle Creek Reservoir: An Element In The Local Settlement Fabric, Gary Lee Henton Apr 1974

Lakeside Homes Around Tuttle Creek Reservoir: An Element In The Local Settlement Fabric, Gary Lee Henton

Student Work

'l'he construction of several large reservoirs in the Midwest has brought about the growth of innumerable ancillary developments. The increased number of new homes, located adjacent to the reservoirs represents a growing component of our settlement fabric. Geographers have done studies on recreational developments, (Wolfe, Roy L., "Summer Cottages in Ontario"1 Howes, Robert· M., "Recreational Opportunities Arising from Reservoir Construction,"2) but little published investigation has been done in the Kansas, or Nebraska area. How important are the lakeshore homes now, and what part will they play in future housing? Who are the people currently occupying these structures? Where do they …

The Canadian Regional North American Residential Preference Surfaces, Grant William Brown Jan 1974

The Canadian Regional North American Residential Preference Surfaces, Grant William Brown

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The objective of this research was to examine the North American residential preference surfaces of the six traditional regions of Canada. Each regional surface demonstrated a decided spatial regularity in preferences. This regularity was distorted somewhat by local biases and the location of the sample tested relative to the rest of the surface. There was a general tendency to rate the local area high and for preference to decline with increasing distance from the local area. In addition, each surface indicated a strong preference for the west coast here called an ‘Eden’ effect. A ridge of high desirability generally joined …

Perception And Land Use: The Case Of The Mormon Culture Region, Lester D. Campbell Jan 1974

Perception And Land Use: The Case Of The Mormon Culture Region, Lester D. Campbell

Theses and Dissertations

Since the first man perceived and used his environment, there has existed a reciprocal man-land relationship. The physical environment provides opportunities for man's use and also sets limitations. Man's perception and use of his environment is greatly influenced by his culture, which consists of past experience, technology, attitudes, and needs. It is these factors that determine what a man will see as possibilities in land use, and how he will use his environment.

In the case of the relic Mormon Culture Region, Mormon religious beliefs highly influenced perception of the environment. Most visual geographical features of the landscape in the …

Non-Resident Ownership In The Countryside Of Bruce County: A Case Of Rural Resettlement, Robert John Worrall Jan 1974

Non-Resident Ownership In The Countryside Of Bruce County: A Case Of Rural Resettlement, Robert John Worrall

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This study is concerned with the countryside facet of the non-resident ownership phenomenon. The utilization of spatio-temporal analysis in the research answered some of the questions that have arisen concerning the extent and trends associated with the non-resident ownership process.

Rather than employ one of the many diverse governmental definitions based on political ethnocentrism, this study made use of a three-part non-resident ownership definition based more on distance and the characteristics of the Burce County agricultural subsystem. Consequently, foreigners and Canadians were equally viewed as potential non-resident owners. Such a breakdown revealed that Canadian, rather than foreign non-resident ownership, has …

An Analysis Of Youth And Adult Ontario Recreational Travel Characteristics: A Pilot Study In The City Of Waterloo For The Summer Of 1972, Gregory Ian Dick Jan 1974

An Analysis Of Youth And Adult Ontario Recreational Travel Characteristics: A Pilot Study In The City Of Waterloo For The Summer Of 1972, Gregory Ian Dick

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This paper examines the travel patterns of youth and adult recreational participants from Waterloo, Ontario. Specifically, the study pertains to the travel done by these participants in Ontario, during the summer of 1972, and as such, contributes to the sparse literature available on the subject.

It is discovered, that when youth are disaggregated from the population, one is able to determine the recreation travel differences between both parties, with a high degree of accuracy. The fact that a large percent of youth and adults frequent areas of their particular choice, indicates that there must be recognizable characteristics in both parties …

A Geographic Sketch Of Early Utah Settlement, John Thomas Blake Jan 1974

A Geographic Sketch Of Early Utah Settlement, John Thomas Blake

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis depicts in a visual format the settlement geography of early Utah.

Several topics in Utah's historical geography were mapped by conventional cartographic techniques to give an overview of processes and patterns of settlement.

This thesis points to the utility of maps in portraying information concerning settlement activity. It indicates that visual correlations enable the student to better understand settlement through spatial relationships.

Of special interest are the use of color maps, and the creation of physical relief impressions by photographically screening a raised relief map of Utah.
