Analysis Of The Port Of Portland Facility Hinterlands, Timothy D. Wilson
Analysis Of The Port Of Portland Facility Hinterlands, Timothy D. Wilson
Dissertations and Theses
Most of the United States port authorities delineate their hinterland by the use of freight rate schedules used by inland carriers. The hinterland is defined as that region having favorable rates to and from a port. The use of freight rate schedules can be applied to a) individual commodities or to b) all the commodities moving through a port. The freight rate method is built on the "rational man" concept. That is, a situation is assumed where there is "perfect knowledge" and a desire to minimize transportation costs. This assumption does not always coincide with reality.
This paper classifies commodities …

From Portland To The Pacific: An Environmental Studies Tour Via The Wilson River Highway, John O. Dart
Occasional Papers in Geography
Occasional Papers in Geography Publication No. 2
This field guide is the outgrowth of several years experience conducting field courses in conservation and environment and the recognition that little has been prepared for this area through which thousands of Oregonians travel each year, particularly during the summer season.
Spatial Variations In The Intra-Urban Response To A Noise Source, Wilbur David Conder
Spatial Variations In The Intra-Urban Response To A Noise Source, Wilbur David Conder
Dissertations and Theses
Most research on the urban sonic environment has been recent. One finding has been that physical noise exposure indices calibrate poorly with human noise response. The vagaries of human response to noise have given impetus to research to isolate the factors that differentiate human response to noise. The present thesis continues this research.
The thesis specifies human noise response to occur on three levels: awareness, annoyance, and complaint. The factors that structure each level of noise response are identified in the published Iiterature.
Noise awareness is a function of noise exposure. Noise annoyance is a function of noise exposure to …
The Characteristics And Genesis Of Stone Stripes In North Central Oregon, John Baine Pyrch
The Characteristics And Genesis Of Stone Stripes In North Central Oregon, John Baine Pyrch
Dissertations and Theses
Stone stripes are linear accumulations of rock debris separated by finer material and oriented down the steepest available slope. In north central Oregon, the stone stripes are composed of basalt fragments and occur where the soil mantle averages less than 1 m in depth. They are best developed in areas of higher elevation, usually from about 900 to 1100 m, and are most prominent on convex to straight slopes of 15 to 30 degrees. The stripes vary from a few meters to over 150 in length, and their widths range from 0.3 to over 3 m. The depth of the …
Select Problems With Recreation, Tourist, And Vacation Oriented Businesses As Rural Economic Stabilizers: A Case Study Of The Mid-Columbia Economic Development District, Morton I. Michelson
Select Problems With Recreation, Tourist, And Vacation Oriented Businesses As Rural Economic Stabilizers: A Case Study Of The Mid-Columbia Economic Development District, Morton I. Michelson
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis examples some of the factors that appear to have influenced the development of recreation and tourism in a special geographic area within the states of Washington and Oregon, The Mid• I Columbia Economic Development District. A central question this thesis attempts to answer is: Should the development of recreation and tourist activities be continued as a means of bolstering the lagging economies In the District. Up until this time, the District has been the benefactor of certain state and federal economic development programs whose primary thrust were: to cut unemployment, broaden economic bases In communities with lagging economies, …
Continuity Of A Traditional Social Pattern: The "Man-Patron" Relationship In Contemporary Northeast Brazil, Patricia Ellen Thorpe
Continuity Of A Traditional Social Pattern: The "Man-Patron" Relationship In Contemporary Northeast Brazil, Patricia Ellen Thorpe
Dissertations and Theses
Northeast Brazil is a region characterized by economic poverty and human misery. Poor ecological conditions contribute to the nature of the dilemma, but another factor in the apparent cultural stagnation of the Northeast, may be the persistence of values and social practices traditionally aligned with the colonial sugar plantation system. Thus, this thesis represents an examination of the continuity of a given pattern, the man/patron relationship. This pattern is a contemporary parallel to the master/slave relationship which was the key to understanding of the social system of the colonial period. An historical overview reveals the nature of the traditional system, …
Biogeography Field Guide To Cascade Mountains : Transect Along U.S. Highway 26 In Oregon, Larry W. Price
Biogeography Field Guide To Cascade Mountains : Transect Along U.S. Highway 26 In Oregon, Larry W. Price
Occasional Papers in Geography
Occasional Papers in Geography Publication No. 1
This guide is an outgrowth of field trips I have made with students in biogeography classes at Portland State University. When I first began these field trips I was surprised that such a guide was not available. It seemed such a natural thing to have, given the spectacular laboratory of the Cascades where is displayed one of the most dramatic sequences of contrasting environments on earth. Within less than 100 miles you pass from a cloudy marine climate to a semi-arid continental climate, from a lush green land with towering trees to desert …
An Analysis Of Geographical Concepts And Characteristics Of Maps In Selected Textbooks, Helen Elizabeth Wittke
An Analysis Of Geographical Concepts And Characteristics Of Maps In Selected Textbooks, Helen Elizabeth Wittke
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of the thesis was to examine the extent to which geography is integrated into history courses. This was done through analyses of the maps in eighth and tenth grade history books. Every map in each book was tabulated according to its purpose, characteristics, and cartographic techniques. The statistics which were gathered from these tabulations were then used as a basis for percentages of the maps devoted to various purposes. In addition to this, twenty-five maps were analyzed in detail, with an examination not only of the map, but of the accompanying text, and the method in which the …
