Development Of A Novel Multi-Layer Mre Isolator For Suppression Of Building Vibrations Under Seismic Events, Jian Yang, Shuaishuai Sun, Tongfei Tian, Weihua Li, Haiping Du, Gursel Alici, Masami Nakano

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Protecting civil engineering structures from uncontrollable events such as earthquakes while maintaining their structural integrity and serviceability is very important; this paper describes the performance of a stiffness softening magnetorheological elastomer (MRE) isolator in a scaled three storey building. In order to construct a closed-loop system, a scaled three storey building was designed and built according to the scaling laws, and then four MRE isolator prototypes were fabricated and utilised to isolate the building from the motion induced by a scaled El Centro earthquake. Fuzzy logic was used to output the current signals to the isolators, based on the real-time …

Optimal Design Of Fixture Layout In A Multi-Station Assembly Using Highly Optimized Tolerance Inspired Heuristic, Satish Tyagi, Nagesh Shukla, Sumant Kulkarni

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The multi-station assembly (MSA) process requires auxiliary devices such as fixtures and clamps to accurately locate and firmly hold the workpiece in a desired position. Improper positioning of these fixtures and clamps affects the dimensional integrity of final product. This study determines the optimal design of fixture layout that minimizes the product dimensional variations caused by the manhandling and aging of auxiliaries. In order to model variation propagation from one assembly station to another in the MSA, a state space model is employed. Further, an E-optimality based sensitivity criterion is proposed to mathematically formulate and measure the quality of the …

Genomic Selection In Multi-Environment Crop Trials, Helena Oakey, Brian R. Cullis, Robin Thompson, Jordi Comadran, Claire Halpin, Robbie Waugh

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Genomic selection in crop breeding introduces modeling challenges not found in animal studies. These include the need to accommodate replicate plants for each line, consider spatial variation in field trials, address line by environment interactions, and capture nonadditive effects. Here, we propose a flexible single-stage genomic selection approach that resolves these issues. Our linear mixed model incorporates spatial variation through environment-specific terms, and also randomization-based design terms. It considers marker, and marker by environment interactions using ridge regression best linear unbiased prediction to extend genomic selection to multiple environments. Since the approach uses the raw data from line replicates, the …

Stochastic Modeling And Optimization Of Multi-Plant Capacity Planning Problem, Anoop Verma, Nagesh Shukla, S.K Tyagi, Nishikant Mishra

Nagesh Shukla

n this paper the problem of capacity planning under risk from demand and price/cost uncertainty of the finished products is addressed. The deterministic model is extended into a two-stage stochastic model with fixed recourse by means of various expected levels of demand as random. A recourse penalty is also included in the objective for both shortage and surplus in the finished products. The model is analyzed to quantify the risk using Markowitz mean-variance model.

Competitive Adsorption Of Metals On Cabbage Waste From Multi-Metal Solutions, M Hossain, H Ngo, W Guo, L Nghiem, F Hai, S Vigneswaran, Thanh Vinh Nguyen

Faisal I Hai

This study assessed the adsorption capacity of the agro-waste ‘cabbage’ as a biosorbent in single, binary, ternary and quaternary sorption systems with Cu(II), Pb(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II) ions. Dried and ground powder of cabbage waste (CW) was used for the sorption of metals ions. Carboxylic, hydroxyl, and amine groups in cabbage waste were found to be the key functional groups for metal sorption. The adsorption isotherms obtained could be well fitted to both the mono- and multi-metal models. In the competitive adsorption systems, cabbage waste adsorbed larger amount of Pb(II) than the other three metals. However, the presence of the …

Depth Image Super-Resolution Using Multi-Dictionary Sparse Representation, Haoheng Zheng, Abdesselam Bouzerdoum, Son Lam Phung

Haoheng Zheng

In this paper, we propose a new depth super-resolution technique based on multiple dictionary learning. A novel dictionary selection method using basis pursuit is proposed to generate multiple dictionaries adaptively. A sparse representation of each low-resolution input patch is derived based on the learned dictionaries, and then used to reconstruct the corresponding high-resolution patch. Experimental results are presented which show that the proposed multi-dictionary scheme outperforms existing depth super-resolution methods.

Multi-View Indoor Scene Reconstruction From Compressed Through-Wall Radar Measurements Using A Joint Bayesian Sparse Representation, Van Ha Tang, Abdesselam Bouzerdoum, Son Lam Phung, Fok Hing Chi Tivive

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper addresses the problem of scene reconstruction, incorporating wall-clutter mitigation, for compressed multi-view through-the-wall radar imaging. We consider the problem where the scene is sensed using different reduced sets of frequencies at different antennas. A joint Bayesian sparse recovery framework is first employed to estimate the antenna signal coefficients simultaneously, by exploiting the sparsity and correlations between antenna signals. Following joint signal coefficient estimation, a subspace projection technique is applied to segregate the target coefficients from the wall contributions. Furthermore, a multitask linear model is developed to relate the target coefficients to the scene, and a composite scene image …

Multi-Phase Variety Trials Using Both Composite And Individual Replicate Samples: A Model-Based Design Approach, Alison B. Smith, David G. Butler, C R. Cavanagh, Brian R. Cullis Jan 2015

Multi-Phase Variety Trials Using Both Composite And Individual Replicate Samples: A Model-Based Design Approach, Alison B. Smith, David G. Butler, C R. Cavanagh, Brian R. Cullis

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The present paper provides an approach for the design and analysis of variety trials that are used to obtain quality trait data. These trials are multi-phase in nature, comprising a field phase followed by one or more laboratory phases. Typically the laboratory phases are costly relative to the field phase and this imposes a limit on the number of samples that can be tested. Historically, this has been achieved by sacrificing field replication, either by testing a single replicate plot for each variety or a single composite sample, obtained by combining material from several field replicates. An efficient statistical analysis …

A Survey Of Single And Multi-Hop Link Schedulers For Mmwave Wireless Systems, Jian Song, Kwan-Wu Chin Jan 2015

A Survey Of Single And Multi-Hop Link Schedulers For Mmwave Wireless Systems, Jian Song, Kwan-Wu Chin

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Wireless communication at 60. GHz, aka mmWave, provides extremely high data rates, i.e., several Gb/s. Moreover, devices have a much shorter transmission range as compared to those operating in the 2.4 and 5. GHz bands. Indeed, links can be treated as pseudo-wires with minimal interference leakage. As a result, future 60. GHz systems will have very high spatial reuse. This, however, is at the expense of high propagation loss, which can be overcome using directional or smart antennas. Another promising solution is to employ relays to boost the signal of weak links. In particular, if relays are properly selected, they …

Energy Efficiency Analysis Of Antenna Selection Multi-Input Multi-Output Automatic Repeat Request Systems Over Nakagami-M Fading Channels, Ngoc Phuc Le, Le Chung Tran, Farzad Safaei, Vineeth Satheeskum Varma Jan 2015

Energy Efficiency Analysis Of Antenna Selection Multi-Input Multi-Output Automatic Repeat Request Systems Over Nakagami-M Fading Channels, Ngoc Phuc Le, Le Chung Tran, Farzad Safaei, Vineeth Satheeskum Varma

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this study, the authors investigate energy efficiency in antenna selection multi-input multi-output automatic repeat request (MIMO ARQ) wireless systems. The authors first derive an approximate expression for the average frame-error rate (FER) in antenna selection MIMO systems over quasi-static Nakagami-m fading channels. The FER approximation is then used to obtain an analytical expression of an energy-efficiency metric that is defined as the total energy required to successfully deliver one information bit. The authors prove that this energy-efficiency metric is a quasi-convex function with respect to the average signal-to-noise ratio value. Based on this analysis, the authors obtain the optimal …

Multi-Period Liner Ship Fleet Planning With Dependent Uncertain Container Shipment Demand, Qiang Meng, Tingsong Wang, Shuaian Wang Jan 2015

Multi-Period Liner Ship Fleet Planning With Dependent Uncertain Container Shipment Demand, Qiang Meng, Tingsong Wang, Shuaian Wang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper deals with a realistic multi-period liner ship fleet planning problem by incorporating stochastic dependency of the random and period-dependent container shipment demand. This problem is formulated as a multi-period stochastic programming model with a sequence of interrelated two-stage stochastic programming (2SSP) problems characterized ship fleet planning in each single period. A solution method integrating dual decomposition and Lagrangian relaxation method is designed for solving the developed model. Numerical experiments are carried out to assess applicability and performance of the proposed model and solution algorithm. The results further demonstrate importance of stochastic dependence of the uncertain container shipment demand.

An Identity-Based Multi-Proxy Multi-Signature Scheme Without Bilinear Pairings And Its Variants, Maryam Rajabzadeh Asaar, Mahmoud Salmasizadeh, Willy Susilo Jan 2015

An Identity-Based Multi-Proxy Multi-Signature Scheme Without Bilinear Pairings And Its Variants, Maryam Rajabzadeh Asaar, Mahmoud Salmasizadeh, Willy Susilo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The notions of identity-based multi-proxy signature, proxy multi-signature and multi-proxy multisignature have been proposed to facilitate public key certificate management of these kinds of signatures by merely employing signer’s identities in place of the public keys and their certificates. In the literature, most identity-based multi-proxy signature, proxy multi-signature and multi-proxy multi-signature schemes are based on bilinear pairings. Without incorporating bilinear pairings, Tiwari and Padhye proposed an identity-based proxy multi-signature scheme in 2011. Subsequently, an identity-based multi-proxy multi-signature scheme was proposed byTiwari et al. in 2012. First, we review identity-based (multi)-proxy multi-signature schemes without bilinear pairings and show that unfortunately, they …

An In-Situ Neutron Diffraction Study Of A Multi-Phase Transformation And Twinning-Induced Plasticity Steel During Cyclic Loading, Ahmed A. Saleh, Donald W. Brown, Elena V. Pereloma, Bjorn Clausen, Christopher H. J Davies, Carlos N. Tome, Azdiar A. Gazder

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In-situ neutron diffraction during cyclic tension-compression loading (þ3.5% to 2.8%) of a 17Mn-3Al-2Si-1Ni-0.06C steel that exhibits concurrent transformation and twinning -induced plasticity effects indicated a significant contribution of intragranular back stresses to the observed Bauschinger effect. Rietveld analysis revealed a higher rate of martensitic transformation during tension compared to compression. Throughout cycling, a0-martensite exhibited the highest phase strains such that it bears an increasing portion of the macroscopic load as its weight fraction evolves. On the other hand, the e-martensite strain remained compressive as it accommodated most of the internal strains caused by the shape misfit associated with the c!e …

Multi-View Twri Scene Reconstruction Using A Joint Bayesian Sparse Approximation Model, Van Ha Tang, Abdesselam Bouzerdoum, Son Lam Phung, Fok Hing Chi Tivive

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper addresses the problem of scene reconstruction in conjunction with wall-clutter mitigation for compressed multi-view through-the-wall radar imaging (TWRI). We consider the problem where the scene behindthe-wall is illuminated from different vantage points using a different set of frequencies at each antenna. First, a joint Bayesian sparse recovery model is employed to estimate the antenna signal coefficients simultaneously, by exploiting the sparsity and inter-signal correlations among antenna signals. Then, a subspace-projection technique is applied to suppress the signal coefficients related to the wall returns. Furthermore, a multi-task linear model is developed to relate the target coefficients to the image …

Clustered Multi-Channel Dereverberation For Ad Hoc Microphone Arrays, Shahab Pasha, Christian H. Ritz Jan 2015

Clustered Multi-Channel Dereverberation For Ad Hoc Microphone Arrays, Shahab Pasha, Christian H. Ritz

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A novel unsupervised multi-channel dereverberation approach in ad-hoc microphone arrays context based on removing microphones with relatively higher level of reverberation from the array and applying the dereverberation method on a subset of microphones with lower level of reverberation is proposed in this paper. This approach does not require any prior information about the number of microphones and their relative locations, however based on kurtosis of Linear Prediction (LP) residual signals, microphones located close to the active source are detected and utilized for the dereverberation process. The proposed method is a clustered enhancement method which can be applied with any …

Multi-Level Controlled Signature, Pairat Thorncharoensri, Willy Susilo, Yi Mu Mar 2014

Multi-Level Controlled Signature, Pairat Thorncharoensri, Willy Susilo, Yi Mu

Professor Willy Susilo

In this work, we present and establish a new primitive called Multi-level Controlled Signature. This primitive allows a signer to specify a security level to limit the verifiability of the signature. This primitive works as follows. Without losing generality, we assume the security levels of a group of users are defined in ascending order, where “A” represents the lowest security level and “Z” represents the highest security level, respectively. When a signer signs a message by specifying a security level “C”, all users who have a security level greater than “C” will be able to verify while other users whose …

(Strong) Multi-Designated Verifiers Signatures Secure Against Rogue Key Attack, Yunmei Zhang, Man Ho Allen Au, Guomin Yang, Willy Susilo

Professor Willy Susilo

Designated verifier signatures (DVS) allow a signer to create a signature whose validity can only be verified by a specific entity chosen by the signer. In addition, the chosen entity, known as the designated verifier, cannot convince any body that the signature is created by the signer. Multi-designated verifiers signatures (MDVS) are a natural extension of DVS in which the signer can choose multiple designated verifiers. DVS and MDVS are useful primitives in electronic voting and contract signing. In this paper, we investigate various aspects of MDVS and make two contributions. Firstly, we revisit the notion of unforgeability under rogue …

Large Networks Of Vertical Multi-Layer Graphenes With Morphology-Tunable Magnetoresistance, Zengji Yue, Igor Levchenko, Shailesh Kumar, Donghan Seo, Xiaolin Wang, S X. Dou, Kostya Ken Ostrikov

Shi Xue Dou

We report on the comparative study of magnetotransport properties of large-area vertical few-layer graphene networks with different morphologies, measured in a strong (up to 10 T) magnetic field over a wide temperature range. The petal-like and tree-like graphene networks grown by a plasma enhanced CVD process on a thin (500 nm) silicon oxide layer supported by a silicon wafer demonstrate a significant difference in the resistance-magnetic field dependencies at temperatures ranging from 2 to 200 K. This behaviour is explained in terms of the effect of electron scattering at ultra-long reactive edges and ultra-dense boundaries of the graphene nanowalls. Our …

Multi-Stage Compressed Sensing And Wall Clutter Mitigation For Through-The-Wall Radar Image Formation, Fok Hing Chi Tivive, Abdesselam Bouzerdoum, Van Ha Tang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this paper, a multi-stage through - The-wall radar imaging technique combining wall clutter mitigation and scene reconstruction is proposed. In the first stage, compressed sensing is applied to compressive measurements to recover the radar signals in the wavelet domain. Then, a subspace projection method is employed to remove the wavelet coefficients associated with the exterior wall reflections. In the second stage, the remaining wavelet coefficients are further compressed using principal component analysis. A compact linear measurement model is then formulated which relates the compressed wavelet coefficients to the image of the scene. Finally, the image reconstruction problem is solved …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In reverse engineering, reconstruction of 3D point cloud data is the key step to acquire the final profile of the object. However, the quality of 3D reconstruction is influenced by noise in the three-dimensional measurement. This paper aims to tackle the issue of removing the noisy data from the complex point cloud data. The 3D-GPF (Three Dimensional Global Phase Filtering) global phase filtering method is proposed based on the study of phase filtering method, consisting of the steps below. Firstly, the six-step phase shift profilometry is used to obtain the local phase information, and encoding the obtained phase information. Through …

A Decision Support Tool To Optimize Imrt Qa Workflow In A Multi-Vendor Equipment Environment, Sankar Arumugam, Aitang Xing, Philip Vial, Lois Holloway

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Development of a software tool to ease the Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) pre-treatment Quality Assurance process is presented in this study. The delivery of IMRT involves equipment from multiple vendors. The limitations of the equipment involved in this chain will impact on the best choice of equipment. This often results in the user needing to use multiple pieces of equipment before determining the most appropriate choices to optimise the QA work flow. This is a time consuming process and potentially delays the start of patient treatment. Software was developed in-house to assist the decision making process, validating deliverability of …

Multi-Polarization Through-The-Wall Radar Imaging Using Joint Bayesian Compressed Sensing, Abdesselam Bouzerdoum, Fok Hing Chi Tivive, Van Ha Tang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper presents a new image formation method for multi-polarization through-the-wall radar imaging. The proposed method combines wall clutter mitigation and scene reconstruction in a unified framework using multitask Bayesian compressed sensing. First, the radar signals are jointly recovered using Bayesian compressed sensing in the wavelet domain. Then, a subspace projection method is employed to mitigate the front wall reflections. This is followed by principal component analysis, which is used to compress the remaining wavelet coefficients and remove noise. A linear model is developed which relates the compressed wavelet coefficients directly to the image of the scene. For scene reconstruction, …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Data-intensive services have become one of the most challenging applications in cloud computing. The classical service composition problem will face new challenges as the services and correspondent data grow. A typical environment is the large scale scientific project AMS, which we are processing huge amount of data streams. In this paper, we will resolve service composition problem by considering the multi-objective data-intensive features. We propose to apply ant colony optimization algorithms and implemented them with simulated workflows in different scenarios. To evaluate the proposed algorithm, we compared it with a multi-objective genetic algorithm with respect to five performance metrics

Nowadays, development is synonymous with construction of infrastructure. Such road infrastructure needs constant attention in terms of traffic monitoring as even a single disaster on a major artery will disrupt the way of life. Humans cannot be expected to monitor these massive infrastructures over 24/7 and computer vision is increasingly being used to develop automated strategies to notify the human observers of any impending slowdowns and traffic bottlenecks. However, due to extreme costs associated with the current state of the art computer vision based networked monitoring systems, innovative computer vision based systems can be developed which are standalone and efficient …

3d Fem Analysis Of Strip Shape During Multi-Pass Rolling In A 6-High Cvc Cold Rolling Mill, Kezhi Linghu, Zhengyi Jiang, Jingwei Zhao, Fei Li, Dongbin Wei, Jianzhong Xu, Xiaoming Zhang, Xianming Zhao

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A 3D elastic–plastic finite element method (FEM) model of cold strip rolling for 6-high continuous variable crown (CVC) control rolling mill was developed. This model considers the boundary conditions such as accurate CVC curves, total rolling forces, total bending forces and roll shifting values. The rolling force distributions were obtained by the internal iteration processes instead of being treated as model boundary conditions. The calculated error has been significantly reduced by the developed model. Based on the rolling schedule data from a 1,850-mm CVC cold rolling mill, the absolute error between the simulated results and the actual values is obtained …
