From Active Learning To Activity: Getting Beyond Busy Work And Into Deep Learning, Wendy Holliday

This session will report on an ethnographic study of an English composition class. The researcher observed the class for an entire semester and conducted focus groups and interviews with students and the instructor. The session will describe key activities from the class, including reflections on motivation and learning by both instructors and students. It will conclude with a discussion of how the research findings can help librarians design instruction that engages learners more deeply.

For counselors, the ecosystem is vast and encompassing; and professionals must understand the client in both context and time. This in and of itself is a daunting task; now, enter the New Millennium and on-line counseling. The Web is the poster child of interconnectivedness and interdependence of systems; however, is the Web bringing us closer or further apart? The Web is transforming society and potentially the ecological context of counseling. A review is necessary.

South Africa has undergone major changes in the school curriculum. At the same time, international emphasis on the importance of Information Literacy has found reflections locally in many calls for the development of school libraries (e.g. Arnold, 2002: 178), but has remained a problem in the actual implementation. This is also reflected in initial teacher training which has moved Information Literacy to a skill of the teacher, rather than an essential part of the curriculum that they have to teach.

For the past few years, a federal grant sponsored by the Department of Justice has allowed teams consisting of faculty (from two-year and four-year colleges) and practitioners to assess the training curricula of various United States law enforcement and correctional agencies. Although traditional wisdom in academia is against viewing training academy courses as academically credible, the teams, after carefully assessing many training curricula, have agreed to give academic credit recommendation to those deserving curricula. Analyzing consumer welfare from observable data, or empirical demand functions has been a very controversial issue in economics. One metric often used is deadweight loss from a tax or price increase. A classic debate in economic history regarding the appropriate methodology for measuring deadweight loss involves two papers published in the American Economic Review by Jerry Hausman and Robert Willig. In ‘Consumer’s Surplus Without Apology’ Willig contends that the error in approximating deadweight loss using the observable Marshallian demand curve is small for small price changes and an acceptable practice.
