This exploratory study focuses on the information literacy needs of academically under-prepared, college students in a small, rural community college in the Southeastern United States. Some of our objectives were more interaction, relationship building, additional opportunities to expose students to our resources, and strengthen student information literacy. The proliferation of digital media has created a need for college instructors to cultivate in students the skills required to navigate and participate effectively within an information- and communication-rich environment. In addition, digital technologies open up new opportunities for integrating research-intensive instruction specifically designed to incorporate information literacy into the core curriculum. This panel will discuss a pedagogical experiment in which we created an “eXtensible” classroom that integrated a number of institutional resources. The business sector has traditionally evaluated their training and instruction programs on a model that considers 4 levels of success (Kirkpatrick). These levels can be described as success based on 1) appeal, 2) learning outcomes 3) integration of learning into daily work routines, or 4) overall impact on / improvement of the organization. This paper describes how this rubric can be generally, and ideally, translated and applied to instruction programs in libraries to determine what levels of evaluation are attempted by libraries. This panel, consisting of instructors of the Introduction to Women’s Studies course, is concerned with including information literacy and skills training concepts into curriculum in a way that supplements our subject matter. In an introductory level course there is usually a broad range of experience in information literacy. As may be expected, upper class students have a better understanding of the research process than first year students and general education students have less interest in subject-specific research than majors or minors. Dr. Kuhlthau’s Information Search Process theory (ISP) asserts that there are six stages within the quest for information: initiation, selection, exploration, formulation and collection. A successful search for information will entail each of these stages. In each of these stages, a person experiences thoughts, feelings and actions unique to the stage. Kolb’s Learning Style Inventory asserts that those with different predominant learning styles will experience thoughts, feelings and perceptions differently.
