Using longitudinal data from the UCLA Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) and Your First College Year (YFCY) surveys, this study examines predictors of the likelihood that science-oriented students would participate in a health science undergraduate research program during the first year of college. The key predictors of participation in health science research programs are students’ reliance on peer networks and whether campuses provide structured opportunities for first-year students even though only 12% of freshmen in the sample engaged in this activity. These experiences are particularly important for Black students. The findings inform efforts to orient students at an early stage, …

The focus of our paper is primarily the European context, but the ideas and processes have a much wider scope. In an era that is characterised by a generalised ‘state of exception’ (Agamben, 2004), the …

The Institutional Repository Rediscovered: What Can A University Do For Open Access Publishing?
The Institutional Repository Rediscovered: What Can A University Do For Open Access Publishing?
Irene Kamotsky
Universities have always been one of the key players in open access publishing and have encountered the particular obstacle that faces this Green model of open access, namely, disappointing author uptake. Today, the university has a unique opportunity to reinvent and reinvigorate the model of the institutional repository. This article explores what is not working about the way we talk about repositories to authors today and how we can better meet faculty needs. More than an archive, a repository can be a showcase that allows scholars to build attractive scholarly profiles, and a platform to publish original content in emerging …

Exploring Complexities Of Multiple Identities Of Lesbians In A Black College Environment, Lori Patton Davis, Symone Simmons
Lori Patton Davis
Experiences of first year female Black students who self-identified themselves as lesbian and attended a historically Black university are examined. A reconceptualized Model of Multiple Dimensions of Identity and the Multidimensional Identity Model were used to establish the framework for this study. Overall the study provided a current identity status for participants which included race, gender, and sexual orientation. Results from semi-structured interviews revealed three themes related to how participants made sense of their identity internally and in relation to external expectations and influences.

Marketing To Helicopter Parents: Hovering Headache Or Untapped Economic Resource, Oscar T. Mcknight, Ronald Paugh, Aaron Mcknight, Heidi Parker
Oscar T McKnight Ph.D.
Too often helicopter parents are deemed bothersome to professionals in higher education. However, this research indicates that helicopter parents are a niche market. Thus, incorporating the helicopter parent into a university's offical target marketing campaign appears warranted and necessary given the current economic climate.
Human And Fundamental Rights And Duties In Portuguese Constitution. Some Reflections, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha
Human And Fundamental Rights And Duties In Portuguese Constitution. Some Reflections, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha
Paulo Ferreira da Cunha
The Portuguese Constitution (1976) came after a period of 48 years of authoritarianism and a closed society, in which some happy few enjoyed great privileges while the great majority of people were charged with heavy duties So, by a very understandable "law of human nature", the constituent law givers could not reasonably impose constitutionally many obligations, in an autonomous way. As rights and duties are the twin sides of the same coin, the juridical formulation under the sign of rights also implies obligations, related to those same rights. This is kinder and more pleasant to do by a liberating Constitution...

Princípio Republicano E Virtudes Republicanas, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha
Princípio Republicano E Virtudes Republicanas, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha
“Directly or indirectly, Athenian democracy as an extraordinary experiment in social history thus stimulates our own thinking about crucial issues of our own democracy and society, incomparably more complex though they are. The point is precisely that the ancients help us focus on the essentials" - como afirma Kurt A. Raaflaub.
Cascading Infrastructure Failures: Avoidance And Response, George H. Baker, Cheryl J. Elliott
Cascading Infrastructure Failures: Avoidance And Response, George H. Baker, Cheryl J. Elliott
George H Baker
No critical infrastructure is self-sufficient. The complexity inherent in the interdependent nature of infrastructure systems complicates planning and preparedness for system failures. Recent wide-scale disruption of infrastructure on the Gulf Coast due to weather, and in the Northeast due to electric power network failures, dramatically illustrate the problems associated with mitigating cascading effects and responding to cascading infrastructure failures once they have occurred.
The major challenge associated with preparedness for cascading failures is that they transcend system, corporate, and political boundaries and necessitate coordination among multiple, disparate experts and authorities. This symposium brought together concerned communities including government and industry …

“It Takes A Village To Raise A Child”: The Role Of Social Capital In Promoting Academic Success For African American Men At A Black College, Robert T. Palmer, Phd, Marybeth Gasman, Phd
Robert T. Palmer, PhD
Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) were created to provide educational opportunities for African Americans when other higher education venues restricted their participation. HBCUs are credited with nurturing and producing leaders who embraced W. E. B. Du Bois's concept of the "Talented Tenth," and exhibiting fortitude in advancing social equality for all. Over the years, as legalized segregation was overturned and efforts were made to expand opportunities for African Americans, some have questioned the continuing need for HBCUs. A study of 11 African American men attending a public, urban HBCU, indicated that the university's rich supply of social capital (a …

Mastering One’S Own Fate: Non-Cognitive Factors Associated With The Success Of African American Males At An Hbcu, Robert T. Palmer, Phd, Terrell L. Strayhorn, Phd
Robert T. Palmer, PhD
While many studies have examined the academic achievement of African Americans attending predominantly White institutions (PWIs) compared to their experiences at Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), researchers have neglected to thoroughly examine academic achievement in the context of Black colleges for African American males. To this end, this article presents a qualitative study of 11 African American men who entered a historically Black college and university (HBCU) academically unprepared but who persisted to graduation. Findings provide compelling evidence that non-cognitive factors, coupled with institutional support, were significant variables in students’ retention and persistence.

Promoting Competence And Resilience In The School Context, Ann S. Masten, Janette E. Herbers, J. J. Cutuli, Theresa L. Lafavor
J. J. Cutuli
Four decades of research on resilience in young people provide compelling data and models that have important implications for schools and strengths-based school counseling (SBSC). Resilience is defined in relation to competence in developmental tasks and risks to positive development, with reference to key promotive and protective roles of schools and school staff. Implications of a resilience framework for schools are delineated, including positive approaches to mission statements, models of change, measuring positive progress, and mobilizing powerful systems for changing the direction of human development. New horizons of research on resilience are described, along with the potential of integrating SBSC …

Housing For Livelihoods: The Lifecycle Of Housing And Infrastructure Through A Whole-Of-System Approach In Remote Aboriginal Settlements, Kurt W. Seemann, Matthew Parnell, Stephen Mcfallan, Selwyn Tucker
Kurt W Seemann
This study set out to review work to date on sustainable investment in desert settlements, reporting on extending the lifecycle of remote, particularly Aboriginal, settlement housing and infrastructure relative to social, technical and economic investment. We aimed to synthesise emerging understandings, articulate new thinking in relation to these understandings, and develop keystone strategies for exploring new ideas in the next stage of research. The main thesis of this project is that technical and economic considerations alone are inadequate for developing innovative responses to expressed need. Key factors for success are local end-user experiences and the capacities of desert people in …
