La Educación Superior En El Mercado. Configuraciones Emergentes Y Nuevos Proveedores, Roberto Rodríguez-Gómez
La Educación Superior En El Mercado. Configuraciones Emergentes Y Nuevos Proveedores, Roberto Rodríguez-Gómez

Education And Development In Mexico: Middle And Higher Education Policies In The 1990s, Roberto Rodríguez-Gómez, Lorenza Villa-Lever
Roberto Rodríguez-Gómez
This chapter is comprised of four sections. The first considers the characteristics of “knowledge society” and the educational changes that developing countries must undertake if they are ever to close the gap with the industrialized world. The next section assesses secondary edu-cation in Mexico, and the third examines the higher educational system. The final part offers a series of reflections on the tendencies that we are now witnessing, outlining the changes that are required to achieve better articulation between middle and higher education policy and Mexico’s options for growth and development in the near future.

Peirce's "Diagrammatic Reasoning" As A Solution Of The Learning Paradox, Michael H.G. Hoffmann
Peirce's "Diagrammatic Reasoning" As A Solution Of The Learning Paradox, Michael H.G. Hoffmann
Michael H.G. Hoffmann
How can we reach “new” levels of knowledge if “new” means that there is something “evolved” that cannot be generated simply by deduction or by induction from what has been given before. The paper’s first goal is to show that two paradigmatic attempts at solving this so-called “learning paradox,” Plato’s apriorism and Aristotle’s inductivism, form two horns of a dilemma: While the inductivist cannot justify any representation of data without assuming a priori given hypotheses, the apriorist cannot justify why a certain application of given ideas is correct without being caught in an infinite regress. The second goal is to …

Translation Events In Cross-Language Information Retrieval: Lexical Ambiguity, Lexical Holes, Vocabulary Mismatch, And Correct Translations, Anne R. Diekema
Translation Events In Cross-Language Information Retrieval: Lexical Ambiguity, Lexical Holes, Vocabulary Mismatch, And Correct Translations, Anne R. Diekema
Anne Diekema
Cross-Language Information Retrieval (CLIR) systems enable users to formulate queries in their native language to retrieve documents in foreign languages. Because queries and documents in CLIR do not necessarily share the same language, translation is needed before matching can take
place. This translation step tends to cause a reduction in the retrieval performance of CLIR as compared to monolingual information retrieval.
The prevailing CLIR approach and the focus of this study is query translation. The translation of queries is inherently difficult due to the lack of a one-to-one mapping of a lexical item and its meaning, which creates lexical ambiguity. …

Beyond Guilt: How To Deal With Societal Racism, Lauren N. Nile, Jack C. Straton
Jack C. Straton
This article addresses the specific form of racism that we refer to as “societal,” and provides a method of responding to the guilt-based reactions of many European Americans to the subject of racism. We examine the “daily indignities” to which people of color are subjected and the additional hurt they feel when those indignities are either denied or blamed on them. Finally, we provide practical methods for European Americans to engage in micro-revolutionary change, using their invisible privilege to interrupt the small-scale, insidious incidents of injustice that pass before their eyes.

Linguistic Anthropology Of Education, Stanton Wortham, Betsy Rymes
Linguistic Anthropology Of Education, Stanton Wortham, Betsy Rymes
Betsy Rymes
Over the years, linguistic anthropological research has shown how classrooms are socializing institutions and how language functions as one medium through which this socialization is accomplished. Early work in the field has captured the immediacy of social practice and language use in educational contexts, and has created useful characterizations of variations in communicative competence. The present work builds on the strengths of prior work, showing how new theoretical concepts and empirical methods developed in linguistic anthropology over the last decade can further illuminate educational settings. The authors introduce an updated Linguistic Anthropology of Education which recognizes that, in the rapidly changing …

An African Safari Through Children's Books: Part Ii, Dorothy N. Bowen
Dorothy N. Bowen
What is like for an American family to raise their children in African country? What is it like for the children who are sometimes known as "third culture kids" because they are neither totally a part of their parents' culture nor totally a part of the adopted African culture, but rather are a combination of both?
From Noncompliance To Columbine: Capturing Student Perspectives To Understand Noncompliance And Violence In Public Schools, Doyle Stevick, Bradley Levinson
From Noncompliance To Columbine: Capturing Student Perspectives To Understand Noncompliance And Violence In Public Schools, Doyle Stevick, Bradley Levinson
Doyle Stevick
The paper reviews a number of ethnographic studies of students in U.S. secondary schools to help understand the causes of a range of student behaviors from minor non- compliance to lethal violence. Based on these studies, as well personal experience, the authors suggest that educators and educational researchers approach and understand student perspectives on school life. Such perspectives often reveal the logic of non- compliance, and show that aspects of school structure and practice can exacerbate or contribute to violence. Student non-compliance and alienation can escalate into violence if the student view is not regularly consulted in schools.

The Image Of Libraries And Librarians In Children's Literature, Dorothy N. Bowen
Dorothy N. Bowen
A new action figure of a frumpy librarian who moves her index finger to her lips with 'amazing push-button shushing action!' has librarians around the world raising their voices in protest." A public library director from Maine said in response to the bespectacled woman in a cardigan, long plain skirt and sensible shoes, "The shushing thing just put me right over the edge. It's so stereotypical, I could scream."
African American Student Athletes' Perceptions Of Career Transition In Sport: A Qualitative And Visual Elicitation, Keith Harrison
African American Student Athletes' Perceptions Of Career Transition In Sport: A Qualitative And Visual Elicitation, Keith Harrison
Dr. C. Keith Harrison
This study focuses on 26 African American athletes and explores their perceptions of athletic career transition. Participants consisted of student athletes from a United States National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division IIA institution in the Southeastern region. Participants completed the Life After Sports Scale (LASS), a 58-item inventory utilized to qualitatively and quantitatively examine seven different domains which influence perceptions of the career transition process. The scope of this inquiry examines the qualitative domain of the LASS in which participants were visually primed with a narrative description of a student athlete that has made transition out of sport successfully. Five …

The Limits Of University Autonomy: Power And Politics At The Universidad Nacional Autónoma De México, Imanol Ordorika
Imanol Ordorika
The nature and extent of institutional autonomy at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) has been a matter of contention between academics, policy makers and university members for many years. Opinions about governmental influence over the university in Mexico range from absolute autonomy to absolute control. Few of them, however, are founded on research on university-government relations. Most studies of univer- sity autonomy in Mexico are based on classical definitions and pluralist political perspectives that limit a thorough understanding of this relation between the University and the government in the context of an authoritarian State. This article provides an …

Latin American Education's Computing Crisis, Paul J. Rich
Paul J. Rich
For a number of years I went around the world beating the drum for the role of computing in education. That has become a too familiar tune and now the focus is on aspects of computing in schools and universities rather than the general need to introduce the topic. However, we are just at the start of a revolution...

New Paradigm In Classroom Assessment: The Externally Trained (Et) Observer Model, Oscar T. Mcknight, Ronald Paugh
Oscar T McKnight Ph.D.
Traditional classroom assessment techniques are fraught with weaknesses and inherent contradictions. The proposed paradigm in classroom assessment - the Externally Trained (ET) Observer Model - is not a traditional classroom assessment model. It is a quality control measure which ultimately benefits both students and instructor
Developing Materials For The Teaching Of Grammar, Arshad Abd Samad
Developing Materials For The Teaching Of Grammar, Arshad Abd Samad
Arshad Abd Samad
Traditionally, materials used in the teaching of grammar have been for the specific purpose of providing grammar practice. Language drills used by the audiolingual method, for example, were structured in such a way so as to encourage automatic learning. Materials were used to pattern student language behaviour through carefully planned drill and practice. In the communicative approach, grammar activities tend to focus on interaction and reflect a social dimension. Materials used in this approach contain conversations and contextualised situations which focus on the message rather than the grammatical form. The kind of materials used in the teaching and learning of …
