Ouachita Baptist University surprised its students today, Oct. 16, by declaring it Student Catch-up Day and canceling classes in an effort to encourage self-care. The unplanned break was largely in response to a survey of students conducted last weekend to check in on their academic and personal well-being in the midst of an unprecedented semester. While students reported doing well overall, their comments reflected a sense of weariness and desire for a break.

Earlier this year, Ouachita Baptist University was awarded a $37,000 program development grant from the Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education (NetVUE) for its proposal “Discerning Vocation Through Writing.” The two-year grant is intended to equip faculty to better assist students in discerning their vocation through reflective writing exercises.

Ouachita Baptist University has been named “#2 Best Regional College in the South” for the second consecutive year by U.S. News & World Report. The university landed high honors in other categories in the region, as well, including #4 rankings for “Most Innovative” and “Best Undergraduate Teaching” and #5 for “Best Value.”
The U.S. News rankings come as Ouachita has its highest fall enrollment in 20 years and the highest four-year graduation rate on record for the institution.

Ouachita Baptist University recently was named an Exercise is Medicine Silver Level Campus for its commitment to creating a culture of wellness on campus. It is the only university in the state and one of only 15 universities in the nation to achieve this honor for 2016.
Ouachita’s Exercise is Medicine efforts are coordinated through its Department of Kinesiology and Leisure Studies. Dr. Terry DeWitt, chair of the department, accepted OBU’s recognition at the annual EIM meeting in Boston in June.

Ouachita Baptist University’s Art Club will host its annual Juried Student Art Exhibit from Feb. 1-March 2 in Ouachita’s Hammons Art Gallery, located in Mabee Fine Arts Center. This year’s juror was John Deering, award-winning cartoonist and illustrator for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. Winners will be announced at a reception on Feb. 12, 6-7 to p.m., in Hammons Gallery. The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.
A variety of student work will be featured in the exhibit, including paintings, sculptures, photographs and other media.

Ouachita Baptist University’s Department of Theatre Arts will host its annual One Act Play Festival on Dec. 10-11 at 7:30 p.m. in Verser Theatre. The performances are free and open to the public.
The One-Act Play Festival is a required part of a senior level course for theatre majors. These seniors choose a play of their choosing, cast the actors and direct the plays. Auditions for these plays are open to anyone on the campus, so students from all majors have the opportunity to participate in the festival. This year’s festival includes nine different performances.
