UVM Libraries Conference Day
After implementing the discovery tool Primo (eventually renamed CATQuest), the UVM Libraries conducted a usability test to understand how our users approach using this tool without instruction, to discover patterns in searching behavior, and to uncover how compatible Primo is with user search behavior. This presentation will demonstrate the design and implementation of the usability study, as well as reveal some surprising results.

UVM Libraries Conference Day
This project is a work-in-progress exploring collaborative preservation opportunities for libraries and current digital-content creators in Vermont. Legacy retention partnerships are waning with the print industry, and new independent creators are discovering the need to self-archive, develop new alliances, or risk eventual loss of their work. Cooperation is in everyone's best interests, in that libraries can advise on best curation practices for access and interoperability; creators can keep libraries up-to-date technologically; the public benefits from access to more digital-only work; and the bridges between print and digital records are maintained. This presentation is a narrative of the project's origins up …

The Final Destination, Graduation: Increasing Retention Rates Of African American Males Through Student-Faculty Interaction During Study Abroad, Leota Evett Wilson
The Final Destination, Graduation: Increasing Retention Rates Of African American Males Through Student-Faculty Interaction During Study Abroad, Leota Evett Wilson
Black Issues Conference
Summary: As many predominately White institutions continue to emphasize the importance of diversity and multiculturalism, the recruitment of African American students has increased. However, many institutions struggle with retaining this particular student population to graduation, suggesting that they may require a different type of support to achieve degree completion.
Extensive research shows that African American students who participate in leadership or educational enrichment experiences and establish faculty relationships are likely to demonstrate a greater satisfaction with their college experience.
Study abroad offers a unique experiential learning environment that allows students to reinforce classroom knowledge, validate their career field, experience broader …

Getting in our own Way: The Degradation of Student Organizations:
Across the nation our student organizations are struggling and student governments are struggling. Many seem to be on their last leg, past their prime, etc. Organizations don’t have the activism and sacrifice of students form the 60’s and 70’s, drive of the 80’s, survival skills of the 90’s or money and participation of orgs form the early 2000’s. We seek to see if it’s a generational problem or are other factor the problem

Arab Canadian High School Students’ Perceptions Of Their Schooling Experiences: A Narrative Analysis, Nesreen Elkord
Arab Canadian High School Students’ Perceptions Of Their Schooling Experiences: A Narrative Analysis, Nesreen Elkord
International Symposium on Arab Youth
Due to the rise in the number of Arab students in Canadian schools, I am interested in Arab immigrant youths’ everyday lived experiences at school.
Because I believe in Dewey’s (1938) argument, that knowledge is constructed through experience and experience is an essential element in education, I am conducting an exploratory study to learn more about the perceptions of new comer Arab Canadian high school students of their schooling experiences in Canadian schools.
The purpose of this study is to bring an understanding of their lived experiences in an effort to potentially enhance the school-home connections and bridge a cultural …

Mid-Morning Break And Poster Sessions: Application Of The Theory Of Planned Behaviour Within School-Based Prevention Programs For Adolescent Gambling, Renee St-Pierre, Jeffrey L. Derevensky, Rina Gupta, Caroline Temcheff
International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking
The theory of planned behaviour (TPB) and the concept of anticipatory negative emotions have attracted considerable research attention in the formulation of effective preventive interventions. This approach has identified several key constructs (i.e., attitudes, subjective norms, perceptions of control, anticipation of negative emotions) as valid predictors of gambling intentions and behaviour. However, no empirical investigation has utilized these constructs in the design or evaluation of a youth problem gambling prevention initiative.
Objectives. The current research aims to assess the effects of a prevention video on gambling-related attitudes, subjective norms, control perceptions, anticipated negative emotions, and intentions. The video focuses on …
