Aggregate Consumption Spending, The Stock Market, And Asymmetric Error Correction, Lonnie K. Stevans Jan 2004

Aggregate Consumption Spending, The Stock Market, And Asymmetric Error Correction, Lonnie K. Stevans

Lonnie K. Stevans

In this study, we show how changes in wealth resulting from unanticipated changes in the value of equity holdings begin a process whereby households alter consumption growth in order to close the gap between actual and target spending. Because of changing uncertainty or equity price volatility over the stock market cycle, we found the time path of this adjustment to exhibit near random walk behavior during stock market downturns. Conversely, during “boom” periods, e.g. when the value of equities held by households was greater than the threshold, the growth in consumer spending was quick to eliminate the disparity between actual …

José-Manuel Martin Coronado

This research aims to prove that sound economic policies are nothing more that basic conditions for the foreign public debt problem. In fact, by studying the factors of public debt issues in Peru, Latin America and the emerging economies it’s clear that some implicit economic and non-economic factors have to be considered because of the social complexity and variable characteristics in emerging economies. This causes failures in economic policies assumptions, inefficiencies, distorted causality and nonrational behavior. This paper proposes, first, to perform a deep and comparative analysis of the foreign debt determinants in emerging economies, then, to allocate financial resources, …

Unemployment Scarring In High Unemployment Regions, Claudio Lupi, Patrizia Ordine Jan 2002

Unemployment Scarring In High Unemployment Regions, Claudio Lupi, Patrizia Ordine

Claudio Lupi

This paper investigates the effect of individual unemployment experiences on re-employment wages. The empirical analysis is carried out on a panel of Italian individuals. The main result is that while in the northern regions the effect is similar to the one estimated for the UK, in the southern area of the country the impact is not significant. We link this result to the particular socio-economic environment in which the unemployment spells are experienced. We argue that this might be due to the fact that in a high unemployment environment individual unemployment experiences are perceived as "normal" and do not necessarily …

Testing For Asymmetry In Economic Time Series Using Bootstrap Methods, Claudio Lupi, Patrizia Ordine Jan 2001

Testing For Asymmetry In Economic Time Series Using Bootstrap Methods, Claudio Lupi, Patrizia Ordine

Claudio Lupi

In this paper we show that phase-scrambling bootstrap offers a natural framework for asymmetry testing in economic time series. A comparison with other bootstrap schemes is also sketched. A Monte Carlo analysis is carried out to evaluate the size and power properties of the phase-scrambling bootstrap-based test.

Institutional Changes And Discretionary Value For Property Rights In Drylands’ Farming Of The Sudan, Professor Issam A.W. Mohamed Jun 1999

Institutional Changes And Discretionary Value For Property Rights In Drylands’ Farming Of The Sudan, Professor Issam A.W. Mohamed

Professor Issam A.W. Mohamed

Research on land tenure and use control and the socioeconomic sets of regulations in the agricultural rainfed sub sector of Sudan, come to focus for many reasons. Anthropogenic pressure, expanding animal population and migration led to accelerated impacts on both the ecological systems and land yields. Conflicts between governmental regulations and indigenous rules contribute to generate inconsistencies on who have the right to till the land and hence own it. With such transformation logically, more intensive commercial farming took place and land intake exponentially increased. Private or collective property rights of land are procured through traditional tenure, prescription, settlement or …

Direct Tests Of The Rational Expectations Hypothesis: A Study Of Italian Entrepreneurs’ Inflationary Expectations (1980-1988), Claudio Lupi Jan 1989

Direct Tests Of The Rational Expectations Hypothesis: A Study Of Italian Entrepreneurs’ Inflationary Expectations (1980-1988), Claudio Lupi

Claudio Lupi

The primary concern of this paper is to test the rational expectations hypothesis for Italian entrepreneurs' inflationary expectations between 1980 and 1988 using monthly observed expectations. Particular care is devoted to analyzing the problems arising when multiperiod expectations and a nonwhite noise measurement error in the expectations series are considered. The empirical analysis is carried out using cross correlations on ARIMA residuals and transfer function models. This technique seems to be particularly appealing for rationality testing.
