Public Mediations Of Accountability In The #Metoo Era, Amanda Brand Jul 2023

Public Mediations Of Accountability In The #Metoo Era, Amanda Brand

Department of Communication Studies: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Tarana Burke initially launched the Me Too movement to cultivate solidarity among sexual assault survivors in 2006, and public appropriations of this effort have resulted in a kairotic moment of accountability in sexual assault cases. Particularly, the 2017 hashtag, #MeToo populates media platforms as the public invokes it to make sense of sexual assault cases, bearing witness to victim-survivors, assigning blame, or disavowing culpability. Challenging legacies of public denial, #MeToo marks a cultural shift in which victim-survivors are not only speaking out, they are also being heard and believed. I argue that accountability is rhetorically-constructed, negotiated, and imposed through …

Reflections Of The Bentley Ombuds, Eliane S. Markoff Jan 2023

Reflections Of The Bentley Ombuds, Eliane S. Markoff

Office of the Ombuds

The Ombuds Office hears your grievances and can help you resolve a conflict. Conflicts can be within yourself or between you and others, making you feel anxious, not appreciated or worse.

During the past several years at Bentley, I have been given the opportunity to mediate, conduct workshops and provide you with advice to empower you to constructively resolve conflicts on your own. It has been especially rewarding to receive feedback on the progress many of you achieved after a challenging situation. Learning that someone has taken the time to resolve a conflict, apologize for being unfair, or change behavior …

Developing Policies And Procedures For Restorative Accountability At Southwestern Assemblies Of God University, W. Lance Meche May 2022

Developing Policies And Procedures For Restorative Accountability At Southwestern Assemblies Of God University, W. Lance Meche

Doctor of Ministry Theses

This project was designed to address a lack of policies and procedures at Southwestern Assemblies of God University that support its restorative accountability approach in addressing student conduct violations. The student handbook provides rights and responsibilities afforded each student as well as the procedures that appointed staff members are to follow in the event that campus policies are violated; however, the language used in the student handbook did not address modern student culture, nor did it procedurally assist staff members in helping students to develop spiritually. The project intervention involved staff members who address student violations with grace as well …

A Framework For Assessing Accountability In Collaborative Governance: A Process-Based Approach, Seulki Lee, Sonia M. Ospina Mar 2022

A Framework For Assessing Accountability In Collaborative Governance: A Process-Based Approach, Seulki Lee, Sonia M. Ospina

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Despite the complexities involved around the accountability mechanisms of collaborative governance, little is known about how to assess accountability at the network level and disentangle possible accountability deficits. This study first explicates the nature of collaborative governance accountability in contrast to accountability in traditional public administration and market-based governance. The analysis shows how collaborative governance accountability is distinctive: (a) accountability relationships shift from bilateral to multilateral; (b) horizontal as well as vertical accountability relationships are involved; (c) not only formal standards but also informal norms are used; and (d) accountability challenges move from control/audit issues to trust-building and paradox management …

The Curious Cases Of Cancel Culture, Loydie Solange Burmah Aug 2021

The Curious Cases Of Cancel Culture, Loydie Solange Burmah

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Cancel culture is a complex phenomenon that challenges our notions of civic practices, perpetuates surveillance practices amongst individuals who encourage digital public shaming and obscures communal ideas regarding accountability. Hence, it is imperative to complicate and nuance “cancel culture” to understand the different meanings derived from its diverse mechanizations. Other matrices such as power, platform governance, decoloniality, and more bolster ideas about the phenomenon’s extensive sociocultural reach. Using a critical digital ethnographic approach, I exemplify with the analysis two cancel culture cases uncovering themes such as selective cancelations, cancelation effectiveness, performative activism, performative wokeness, hypocrisy, victimization, and empathy. This study …

Listening To The Question: Is Forensics Accessible And Accountable To Minority And Disenfranchised Communities?, Nathan Carter Nov 2020

Listening To The Question: Is Forensics Accessible And Accountable To Minority And Disenfranchised Communities?, Nathan Carter

Proceedings of the National Developmental Conference on Individual Events

This brief presentation asserts that the leaders and tournament directors of the forensics community must do better! Based on the data collected, the answer to the title question is a resounding NO! This guide which touches on the state of accessibility and accountability in the activity is based on countless interviews with students of color and students from the LGBTQ community who experienced insults, discrimination and purposeful silencing. As a mixed-race man, I've also experienced these things throughout my tenure in the forensics community as a competitor, coach and DOF. My perspective on this matter is deeply personal but I …

Fixing Journalism's Credibility Problem: Lessons From The Lippman-Dewey Debate, James Michael Hoyle Jan 2019

Fixing Journalism's Credibility Problem: Lessons From The Lippman-Dewey Debate, James Michael Hoyle

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

With advancing technology and social media becoming a more filtered place, many wonder whether or not the news has lost its credibility. However, this is not the first time technology has changed the way the newsroom works. Comparing the times of today and the times of the 1920s, a literature review and an analysis of the arguments between Walter Lippmann and John Dewey shows that not only are there many parallels, but the debate these two men had nearly one hundred years ago provides a blueprint and a game plan that will allow journalism to get its credibility back in …

Financial Accountability In U.S. Nonprofit Organizations, Evangeline Asafor Ngwashi Jan 2019

Financial Accountability In U.S. Nonprofit Organizations, Evangeline Asafor Ngwashi

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Financial accountability is a pressing issue in United States NPOs because there is a demand, by donors and the public they serve, to implement clear accountability practices. The purpose of this study was to explore and document the financial oversight and accountability policies and procedures that successful NPOs employ to maintain clear financial accountability practices. The theoretical framework underlining this qualitative phenomenological study was a combination of social construction theory and institutional rational choice theory. The research question was focused on understanding essential financial oversight and accountability policies and procedures that should be designed for NPOs to create and maintain …

PURPOSE: Despite concerted actions to streamline care transitions, the journey from hospital to home remains hazardous for patients and caregivers. Remarkably little is known about the patient and caregiver experience during care transitions, the services they need, or the outcomes they value. The aims of this study were to (1) describe patient and caregiver experiences during care transitions and (2) characterize patient and caregiver desired outcomes of care transitions and the health services associated with them.

METHODS: We interviewed 138 patients and 110 family caregivers recruited from 6 health networks across the United States. We conducted 34 homogenous focus groups …

Says Who? Challenges Of Teaching News Literacy In A Culture Of Secrecy, Kanchan Kaur Aug 2017

Says Who? Challenges Of Teaching News Literacy In A Culture Of Secrecy, Kanchan Kaur

First Global News Literacy Conference

India might be the world’s largest democracy, but it is still fraught with challenges that plague the underdeveloped world. India is quickly moving to a digital democracy—the ability to receive information in almost real time through mass media and to make one’s voice heard through social media (1) --with complex consequences. One of them has to do with a post-fact environment and non-state actors who try to influence public opinion to serve their own ends. Social media, especially WhatsApp, serves their purposes well, for instead of exposing people to diverse views, it mainly creates an echo chamber (2). Making matters …

Overcoming The Dark Side: Seeing Through The Spin Of Public Relations In The News, Samantha Stanley Aug 2017

Overcoming The Dark Side: Seeing Through The Spin Of Public Relations In The News, Samantha Stanley

First Global News Literacy Conference

In its current state, news literacy curriculum covers all the information types that consumers will see when they read, watch, listen to, and interact with news content. While current lessons do explain how press releases distribute information in the “promotion / publicity” neighborhood, there is much more nuance to the practice of PR that impacts information people read as ‘news’. In today’s climate of political spin cycles, it is more important than ever for news consumers to understand what public relations is and how its strategies influence news content. Because the practice of public relations is so often misunderstood and …

News Or Native Advertising, Hoang Xuan Phuong Aug 2017

News Or Native Advertising, Hoang Xuan Phuong

First Global News Literacy Conference

We are living in a world surrounded by media. Companies are constantly thinking of new ways of communicating and engaging with the public. When the reader is overwhelmed by advertisements in media, they are no longer persuasive to audiences who begin to disbelieve and question what the companies want to promote and sell. The technique of native advertising, which "employs a third party” such as media, social media, celebrities, professionals and people of high stature, has become an important tool that contributes positively to the success of a business. Sponsored articles and television shows are produced in the same way …

Integrated News Literacy Concepts And Skills In Teaching Mobile Journalism, Nguyet Nguyen, Phuong Hoang Aug 2017

Integrated News Literacy Concepts And Skills In Teaching Mobile Journalism, Nguyet Nguyen, Phuong Hoang

First Global News Literacy Conference

Along with the rapid development of technology infrastructure, Vietnam is witnessing a powerful transformation in media activities. One of the significant changes is the advent of a new media form named mobile journalism. Collecting news from various sources is the most difficult task for journalists writing for the emerging mobile platform. Most of the news will be easily found on social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Zalo, etc. On the one hand, journalists can take advantage of the huge volume of information which is multidimensional and has consistent, timely coverage. However, these sources of news, that often lack transparency, clarity, …

Customizing News Literacy Course In Different Class Settings, Huyen Nguyen Aug 2017

Customizing News Literacy Course In Different Class Settings, Huyen Nguyen

First Global News Literacy Conference

One challenge for the news literacy instructor/lecture/trainer is to tailor lessons to different class settings. Fortunately, I have had opportunities to design news literacy courses for different class sizes, from small groups to big classes, and for different time durations, from a 3-‐session training course to 10-‐ week and 15-‐week courses, as well as for students of different cultures, from Vietnamese students to Chinese and American students.

In this paper, I primarily review my experience designing and teaching News Literacy courses for two 30-‐ student classes at Ohio University and University of Social Sciences and Humanities. In addition, I share …

The Politics Of Town Hall Meetings: Analyzing Constituent Relations-In-Interaction, Robert J. Green Aug 2016

The Politics Of Town Hall Meetings: Analyzing Constituent Relations-In-Interaction, Robert J. Green

Open Access Dissertations

The politics of town meetings proposes that town hall meetings are institutions of representative democracy that present an opportunity for constituents to hold their elected representatives accountable in a public setting. Constituent relations-in-interaction glosses a complex set of interactional practices and procedures through which ensembles of participants bring town hall meetings, as structures of social interaction, into being. This study uses conversation analysis, the study of talk-in-interaction, to show that the politics of town hall meetings orients to three types of accountability: Interactional accountability, political accountability, and public accountability. The articulation of these accountability types provides a sense of overall-structural …

When We Break Bread Together: Perceptions Of Consensus Amongst Queer Organizers, David M. Caswell Jan 2013

When We Break Bread Together: Perceptions Of Consensus Amongst Queer Organizers, David M. Caswell

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis aims to understand consensus decision making through the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) activists in Louisiana through autoethnography and interviews with various individuals involved in Louisiana LGBTQ organizations. When looking at the experiences and perceptions of the participants in relation to each other and the author’s own experiences, the ideas equity, responsibility, and flexibility stand out along with organizational structure. This suggests that consensus may be defined based on these elements. In the narrow scope of this thesis, consensus building in queer spaces in Louisiana can be defined as the opportunity to be in …

Breve Perspectiva Crítica Sobre El Gobierno Abierto Y El Open Data, Lucas Jolías, Alejandro Prince Oct 2012

Breve Perspectiva Crítica Sobre El Gobierno Abierto Y El Open Data, Lucas Jolías, Alejandro Prince

Accreditation And Certification In The Non-Profit Sector: Organizational And Economic Implications, Lise Anne D. Slatten, Brandi N. Guidry, Wesley Austin Jun 2011

Accreditation And Certification In The Non-Profit Sector: Organizational And Economic Implications, Lise Anne D. Slatten, Brandi N. Guidry, Wesley Austin

Organization Management Journal

The non-profit sector of the US economy is a special class of entities with an expansive array of organizations and activities dedicated to the common good and well-being of others. Even though this sector has constructed creative and forward thinking initiatives, obstacles remain which interfere with the accomplishment of significant achievements. In order to stay competitive, non-profit organizations are constantly assessing their current capacity to deliver unique needed services. Today, many umbrella associations of non-profits have implemented accreditation and certification programs intended to improve organizational contribution to member organizations. Throughout the sector, non-profit organizations are now seeking to become more …

The Role Of Conflict Management On Virtual Team Performance And Satisfaction, Pilar Pazos, Anil Ustun, Rolando Delaguila

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

The role that input factors from project planning processes play on conflict emergence and conflict resolution in virtual teams is not well understood. Of particular interest for this paper is the role that factors during planning stages play in preventing interpersonal conflict, supporting conflict resolution and ultimately enhancing team outcomes in virtual team settings. This study examines the relationships among commitment to team goals, conflict management and team outcomes in virtual teams. First we provide an in depth review of relevant empirical findings. Next, we describe a study examining the relationships between three sets of variables: 1) goal commitment, 2) …

Citizen Participation, Metadiscourse And Accountability: A Public Hearing On A Zoning Change For Wal-Mart, Richard Buttny Dec 2010

Citizen Participation, Metadiscourse And Accountability: A Public Hearing On A Zoning Change For Wal-Mart, Richard Buttny

Communication and Rhetorical Studies - All Scholarship

During a contentious public hearing on a zoning change for Wal-Mart, participants at times moved to a metadiscursive level with utterances such as, “expect to be listened to,” “I have a question,” or reading quotes of Town Board members from the newspaper. Such metadiscursive references allow participants to attempt to structure, or depart, from the public hearing format. Metadiscursive references also work to criticize their opponents’ speech or the process. Metadiscourse has the consequence of contextualizing the participation framework of the hearing as to topic, length of presentation, and mode of interaction. From a normative perspective, metadiscourse is used to …

The Politics Of Partnerships. A Critical Examination Of Nonprofit-Business Partnerships, Maria May Seitanidi

Maria May Seitanidi

The widespread partnering phenomenon in the US and the UK spurred a significant amount of literature focusing on its strategic use. The Politics of Partnerships diverges by examining if partnerships can deliver benefits that extend beyond the organisational to the societal level resulting from the intentional combined efforts of the partners. The book offers under the chronological stages of formation, implementation, outcomes a critical examination and proposes a holistic framework for the study of partnerships allowing for observations beyond any single stage.

The Aims Of Public Scholarship In Media Law And Ethics, Erik Ugland Jan 2009

The Aims Of Public Scholarship In Media Law And Ethics, Erik Ugland

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

This essay urges scholars in media law and ethics to reevaluate the extent and utility of their public-scholar efforts and to consider ways that they can transfer research-based knowledge to public audiences while also playing a more deliberate role in holding media and government institutions accountable. It suggests that the devolution of standards in mass communication, the increasing encroachments on media autonomy, and the broader collapse of power into fewer hands make this a particularly urgent moment for scholars to reengage the public and to abandon their feckless neutrality on public issues. The overarching aim of public scholars ought to …

The Legitimacy And Moral Authority Of The National News Council (Usa), Erik Ugland Jun 2008

The Legitimacy And Moral Authority Of The National News Council (Usa), Erik Ugland

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

As an institution designed to resolve disputes between the public and the American news media and to assess the ethical standards of the mainstream media, the National News Council (1973-84) was, at least in the USA, a ground-breaking institution. This study suggests, however, that the Council's work was anything but revolutionary, and that it probably did more to entrench the received tenets of American journalism than to either validate or refashion them. By applying a conventional set of ethical standards in its resolution of disputes, by repeatedly emphasizing the First Amendment rights of the media respondents, by violating its by-laws …
