The “New” Prosumer: Collaboration On The Digital And Material “New Means Of Prosumption”, George Ritzer Apr 2013

The “New” Prosumer: Collaboration On The Digital And Material “New Means Of Prosumption”, George Ritzer

Collaborative Organizations & Social Media Conference

Many of “cyber-utopians” have lauded the Internet, especially social networking sites, for a variety of reasons, including making possible a dramatic and revolutionary increase in social collaboration (Benkler, 2007; Tapscott and Williams, 2006). The goal of this essay is to examine- and, at least in part, debunk- this claim from a new and unique sociological perspective- the relationship between collaboration and the “new means of prosumption”. Such an examination is suggested by the fact that collaboration is, by definition, a form of prosumption. That is, it involves one or more parties “producing” and other(s) “consuming” something of mutual interest and …

Measuring Creative Performance Of Teams Through Dynamic Semantic Social Network Analysis, Peter Gloor Apr 2013

Measuring Creative Performance Of Teams Through Dynamic Semantic Social Network Analysis, Peter Gloor

Collaborative Organizations & Social Media Conference

In this project we compare communication structure and content exchanged by members of creative, interdisciplinary teams of medical researchers, physicians, patients and caretakers with their creative output. We find that longitudinal social networking patterns and word usage predict creative performance. We collected the e-mail archives of 60 members of a community of researchers working on 12 projects improving various aspects of the daily lives of patients of Crohn’s disease. Our results indicate that more creative projects show a decrease in group density, while more actors are involved, and more emails are exchanged, suggesting that a more successful project attracts more …

Compassion Fatigue Or Ethics Exhaustion?, Sonnya Dennis Apr 2013

Compassion Fatigue Or Ethics Exhaustion?, Sonnya Dennis

International Veterinary Social Work Summit

Compassion Fatigue or Ethics Exhaustion?

In veterinary practice, the diagnosis is critical for proper treatment. Different diseases can cause the same symptoms, and while palliative treatment is sometimes necessary, ideally we want prevention or cure. In this talk, I will speak from the experiential perspective of companion animal general practice about the very real and common problem of compassion fatigue, and why it is different from, and can mask, what I call Ethics Exhaustion. In brief, I define Ethics Exhaustion as the feeling of being powerless to even try to do what you think that you ethically should do, because …

The Future Of Social Movement Organizations: The Waning Dominance Of Smos Online, Jennifer Earl Apr 2013

The Future Of Social Movement Organizations: The Waning Dominance Of Smos Online, Jennifer Earl

Collaborative Organizations & Social Media Conference

For scholars interested in the role of information communication technologies (ICTs) in protest and social movements, the importance of organizations doesn’t appear to be as axiomatic. Work over the past decade researching “Internet activism” has raised fundamental questions about SMOs and their continuing importance to protest: Do organizations play the same role in online protest as they have played in offline protest? Are SMOs as necessary for online movements and protest organizing? What role or functions do SMOs play in online protest? In this article, I address these questions by first surveying social movement research on pre-Internet protest to establish …

The Role Of Social Media For Knowledge Sharing And Collaboration In Distributed Teams, Nicole Ellison, Matthew Weber Apr 2013

The Role Of Social Media For Knowledge Sharing And Collaboration In Distributed Teams, Nicole Ellison, Matthew Weber

Collaborative Organizations & Social Media Conference

Social media are providing a medium through which individuals are reshaping how they do many things – finding romantic partners, providing social support, grieving for loved ones, even buying mundane items like toothpaste. They are also reshaping organizations – the way they function, the relationships they contain, and the ways organizations interact with external stakeholders. In this paper, we consider the changes that social media have introduced to organizational knowledge-sharing practices. We believe the social and technical affordances of social media create new challenges for organizations and necessitate research examining the ways in which: (1) technological affordances impact knowledge sharing …

Organization Outreach To The Sfa Campus, Julissa Lopez, Wil Mcfarland, Amy Brennan, Trevor Sparks

Undergraduate Research Conference

Ineffective communication between organizations and students leads to misconceptions as well as low organizational awareness, in both their existence and causes. Organizations tend to be too passive in their recruiting techniques. Communication education and training can aid organizations in becoming more effective at marketing to students and bridging the gap between potential members. Organizations fight for the attention of students to increase enrollment but in order to create initial student curiosity and involvement organizations must spark interest. We hoped to reinforce effective ways to communicate to the student body and increase involvement. We aimed to provide research for organizational leaders …

Trayvon Martin And The International Press, Michael Leslie, Stania Antoine Mar 2013

Trayvon Martin And The International Press, Michael Leslie, Stania Antoine

Center for the Study of Race & Race Relations: Lectures and Events

Just as international coverage of the Emmett Till case in 1955 marshaled domestic support for the civil rights movement, international coverage of the Trayvon Martin murder focused attention on the disgraceful mishandling of the Martin’s murder case, spurring international, national and local public protests, and ultimately forcing the indictment of his killer. This paper examines the international discourse generated around the Martin affair and argues that such discourse widened domestic discourse regarding the murder, transforming the murder of yet another black youth into a referendum on the functioning of the American criminal justice system and the myth of the American …

Mom Made Me: Students Respond To The Flu Shot, Lauren Elizabeth Gregg, Kristin Kelly Carver, Christine Cordelia Copelan

EURēCA: Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement

The University of Tennessee Knoxville’s on-campus Student Health Center publicizes the opportunity for students to receive the influenza immunization for $25 during the flu season. Despite on-campus convenience, many students are still deterred from receiving the shot. Advertising and Public Relations research students used survey research to sample more than 200 students in six major colleges across the University of Tennessee’s campus. The research team gathered relevant information about student perceptions of a healthy lifestyle, flu experience (diagnosis and shot), motivations and deterrence from the flu shot, and general knowledge of the Student Health Center. Results show that 27.5% of …

Outcomes Versus Incomes: Teaching Students What They Need To Get A Job, Joanna Mcmanus, Ruth Callaghan Feb 2013

Outcomes Versus Incomes: Teaching Students What They Need To Get A Job, Joanna Mcmanus, Ruth Callaghan

eCULTURE

It’s an age-old question for university educators: is it our role to provide students with specific skills as well as education? Should learning outcomes be more attuned to what employers want? And which employers? As print and broadcast journalism practitioners, as well as educators, we are involved in research to answer some of these questions. As part of this, we questioned major WA news employers about what they wanted from journalism and broadcasting graduates, both in skills and personal attributes, and what they believed was missing from university journalism courses. We found strong agreement about the importance of ‘traditional’ journalism …

A New Initiative: Student Journalists Learn About Aboriginal Communities And Culture In Western Australia, Trevor Cullen Feb 2013

A New Initiative: Student Journalists Learn About Aboriginal Communities And Culture In Western Australia, Trevor Cullen

eCULTURE

This paper reports on a new initiative between the Combined Universities Centre for Rural Health (CUCRH) and the journalism program at Edith Cowan University (ECU). The main aim is to help journalism students achieve a better understanding of Aboriginal communities and culture in Western Australia, and that this new knowledge and experience will inform student news stories and feature articles on Aboriginal issues. Currently, non-Aboriginal journalists seldom get to meet and talk with Aboriginal people about their life and beliefs, and this often results in narrow and misinformed reporting. So in July 2008, eight final-year ECU journalism students were offered …
