Communicating Across Cultures, Ken Margolies
Communicating Across Cultures, Ken Margolies
Ken Margolies
[Excerpt] Communication is the key to so many things a steward does, and good communication skills are something experienced stewards develop. But even experienced stewards have special challenges when the communication is between people of different cultures.
Talking Vs. Communicating, Ken Margolies
Talking Vs. Communicating, Ken Margolies
Ken Margolies
[Excerpt] There is a saying, "When all is said and done, more is said than done." Stewards who attend union meetings to decide how to handle and issue or grievance sessions with management probably agree. Why is it so difficult to get past the talk and make decisions, agreements, and well, get things done?
Employee Use Of The Internet And Acceptable Use Policies In The Academic Workplace: Controlling Abuse While Creating Culture., B.J. King
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The use of the Internet has grown substantially, especially since the late 1990s. Businesses are relying increasingly on the Internet and intranet as tools to promote productivity. Use of the Internet has several implications for institutions of higher education. Some of the issues institutions are faced with include legal liability for defamatory postings and sexually explicit materials, monitoring versus privacy, motivations to abuse Internet privileges, and use of the Internet to create a corporate culture. Institutions of higher education need to consider how the Internet is being used and how it should be used when acceptable use policies are being …
Fostering Emotional And Social Intelligence In Organizations, Craig R. Seal, Richard E. Boyatzis, James R. Bailey
Fostering Emotional And Social Intelligence In Organizations, Craig R. Seal, Richard E. Boyatzis, James R. Bailey
Organization Management Journal
This paper integrates diverse research to provide a theoretical model of the process whereby emotional and social intelligence (ESI) is fostered in organizations. The purpose of this paper is to provide: (1) an overview of the theory of ESI, including the historical contributions and current conceptualizations; (2) the impact of ESI on performance, including the research evidence and examples of organizations using ESI; (3) developing ESI competencies and a model for desirable, sustainable change; and (4) a call to action for education and management, including guidelines for fostering ESI in organizations. Unlike general intelligence or personality, the key assumption and …

Indoctrination, Diversity, And Teaching About Spirituality And Religion In The Workplace, Donald W. Mccormmick
Indoctrination, Diversity, And Teaching About Spirituality And Religion In The Workplace, Donald W. Mccormmick
Organization Management Journal
The author reflects on his experience and discusses problems in teaching a course about spirituality and religion in the workplace. Sometimes indoctrination happens when professors treat their own spiritual ideology as the truth, or they require students to engage in religious practices in class. Indoctrination is teaching people “to accept a system of thought uncritically.” The management education literature has little to say about indoctrination. Indoctrination can be avoided by (1) ensuring informed consent, (2) designing learning activities for students from all spiritual perspectives, (3) teaching about the topic (instead of taking the “how to” approach), (4) presenting diverse spiritual …
The Myth Of Charismatic Leadership And Fantasy Rhetoric Of Crypto-Charismatic Memberships, Shaun Robert Treat
The Myth Of Charismatic Leadership And Fantasy Rhetoric Of Crypto-Charismatic Memberships, Shaun Robert Treat
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This study will analyze the relationship between myth and the fantasy rhetoric of charismatic leadership by employing Fantasy Theme Analysis to examine the pervasive discourses invoking this enduring folk belief. Fantasies of the Charismatic Superhero are explored within the popular leadership treatises of successful “management gurus” and in our popular culture entertainments. The rhetorical visions of Stephen Covey’s “Principle-Centered Leadership,” Jim Collins’ “Level 5 Leadership,” and Manz and Sims' “SuperLeadership” are examined for their displacement of charismatic leadership in favor of the empowered crypto-charisma of self-leading memberships. Findings suggest “empowerment” rhetorics, like the rhetorical visions championed by many populist “gurus,” …
Management Education: Valuing 'Differences' In The Classroom, Gloria Gordon Phd
Management Education: Valuing 'Differences' In The Classroom, Gloria Gordon Phd
Gloria Gordon PhD
In this paper a discussion is presented for the inclusion of the valuing of 'differences' between people as the cornerstone of hospitality management education curricula using a three-pronged approach. The models advocated for achieving this aim are 'identity development' (Myers, 1991), Action Learning (Revans, 1969) and Awareness and Competence (Howells, 1982). It is argued that the nature of the hospitality industry and the global environment which it serves demands such educational processes if self-aware, critical and ethical managers are to be developed. Empowerment of students through the development of critical thinking skills will enable them to become aware and reflective …
Perspectives On Individual Events: Proceedings Of The First Developmental Conference On Individual Events, Larry Schnoor, Vicki Karns
Perspectives On Individual Events: Proceedings Of The First Developmental Conference On Individual Events, Larry Schnoor, Vicki Karns
Proceedings of the National Developmental Conference on Individual Events
The First NDC-IE conference was held in Denver, Colorado in the summer of 1988. A total of 81 participants met for 3 days to regroup, reflect, and plan the future of forensics. By breaking into panel sessions for presentations and discussions the participants collaborated to reach consensus on guidelines for the future of the activity. The first NDC-IE included papers written on topics ranging from judge training to the role of graduate assistants to fostering better connections with high school programs to ethics in forensics. The conference concluded with a general business meeting where participants proposed resolutions for the forensics …
