Constructing The "New Ethnicities": Media, Sexuality, And Diaspora Identity In The Lives Of South Asian Immigrant Girls, Meenakshi Durham

This paper posits that adolescence, as experienced by girls of immigrant diaspora groups, is complicated by issues of race, culture and nation that intersect with discourses of sex and gender. In terms of globalization theory, sexuality is conceptualized as a locus of cultural hybridization; media representations of sexuality often mark the global/local nexus for diaspora peoples. In this study, a series of in-depth interviews were conducted with South Asian American girls in order to analyze the role of media in their sexual identity constructions. Adolescents, The Internet And The Politics Of Gender: A Feminist Case Analysis, Meenakshi Durham

This case study is based on field observation of the first hands-on Internet sessions experienced by a group of lower-income minority teenagers in an inner-city middle school. Using feminist analysis to interrogate the social dynamic within which the Interact use took place, I explore how new technologies are appropriated by adolescents as a site of social bonding. I conclude that the adolescent users' social locations in terms of gender, race, and class work to constrain Internet use to support dominant relations of power

On The Relevance Of Standpoint Epistemology To The Practice Of Journalism: The Case For "Strong Objectivity", Meenakshi Durham

This paper interrogates traditional notions of journalistic "objectivity" and its interpretation in conventional news reporting. I argue here that the underlying principles of objectivity devolve in practice to an epistemic relativism that fails to consider the validity of various truth claims. I propose an alternative of "strong objectivity" grounded in standpoint theory. I trace the arguments against scientific objectivity that parallel critiques of journalistic objectivity, then propose an alternative conception of praxis that maximizes reflexivity and has the potential to fulfill the

This article interrogates gendered ideologies of sexuality in two teen magazines, Seventeen and YM. The method of analysis involves a close reading of written texts and images relating to sex or sexuality. The patterns that emerge from this analysis reveal tensions that center around sexual decision making versus sexual signification via costuming, cosmetics, and body image. The analysis uncovers a representation of sexuality that parallels sociocultural norms of contradiction and antilogy in the characterization of girls' desire.
