Growing Up And The Emotions That Come With It, Mckenzie J. Blanchard
Growing Up And The Emotions That Come With It, Mckenzie J. Blanchard
ATU Research Symposium
Many people roll their eyes when asked to read a twenty-plus page article and pull out key facts. They also usually do not pull out relatable emotions, but only information. When reading, though, whether poems or short stories, people do not mind the task because they get much more out of it. They walk away with feelings – ones they know from previous, personal experience, and also new ones which relate to the writer’s own story.
My work is an examination of stories of my past that have shaped me into who I am today. The stories are told from …

"It's Not What It Looks Like!": Motivations And Responses To Infidelity, Jessica C. Cochrane
"It's Not What It Looks Like!": Motivations And Responses To Infidelity, Jessica C. Cochrane
Student Scholar Showcase
The topic of infidelity is taboo and often perceived negatively, however, it still occurs frequently. What motivates people to commit infidelity? How do people respond to infidelity committed by those they know? This paper takes the opinions of college-aged subjects into consideration through use of paper surveys to discover how young adults perceive infidelity; both why it gets committed and how they would respond to such an act. Subjects were grouped into sex, classification, whether they have committed infidelity or not, and whether they have been cheated on or not. The results that were found were not all expected. It …

After Writing 730 Newspaper Columns Over 13 Years –Important Lessons Learned And Advice To Others, Don Daake, Edward Piatt
Scholar Week 2016 - present
Dr. Don Daake, Ph.D. (Florida State 1995), Business Professor Emeritus, and Dr. Edward Piatt, Ed.D. (ONU 2011), MBA Adjunct, share their secrets about writing and actually getting published. They are particularly interested in faculty and students who would like to join them as co-authors or anyone who enjoys writing and wants to get published. To paraphrase an old adage, "If a tree falls in the forest with no ears to hear, does it make a sound. It matters not for the tree has fallen." Our version “If you write something and practically no one reads it, have you really written …

Critical Thinking In The Age Of Misinformation: Information Literacy For Citizenship, Tamra Ortgies-Young, Jennfer Lobo Meeks, Barbara Robertson
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
As recent political events across the globe have shed a light on the fragility of democratic values, the role of the University in creating a framework for civic education becomes more urgent. Informed, caring and engaged citizenry must be a goal of higher education. Students currently face the emergence of faulty types of information - such as misinformation and disinformation, which undermines the notion of collective or public inquiry, not only within universities, but also within society as a whole. This challenge must be acknowledged and addressed by academic institutions.
Session presenters will provide an overview of their work, “Critical …

The number of individuals that speak another language that is not English as their primary language is at an all time high in the United States, and this can make healthcare harder to access for this portion of the population. This research examines what barriers are present for those who do not speak English as their primary language, such as miscommunications, reduced trust in their provider related to being unable to speak directly with them, parts of their cultural practices and alternative medicines being ignored or misunderstood by healthcare providers, and not feeling secure enough to reveal sensitive information to …

How Risk-Related Statistics, As Reported In News And Social Media, Are Linked To The Use Of The Public Transit System, Prashiddhi Pokhrel
Thinking Matters Symposium
Due to the pandemic, people have started relying more on televisions, news, social media, and other news outlets for guidance. Moreover, with the increasing amount of news, data, and information there is also an increase in the amount of misleading statistics. People’s opinions and decisions significantly depend on the data, statistics, and information that they are exposed to, as well as their sources. For this project, we want to look at how information and its sources are affecting the decision made by the general public for the usage of the Portland Transit System. It is very important to know why …

This case study evaluates how tech giant, Google, responded to the novel coronavirus pandemic from a policy and resource standpoint and the implications for the women employed by the company. Through the evaluation of company materials along with news reporting on the company response, this case study will attempt to draw conclusions on how working women at Google may have been able to navigate work life balance (WLB) in a work from home (WFH) environment. Using a feminist standpoint theory, which underlines that the experience of gender has a direct relationship to power dynamics and lived experience, this case study …

This research paper gives more insight on the effects of media coverage on violence whether positive or negative. There is something wrong with the way the media reports violence. It’s detrimental to society to publicize so specifically, the details pertaining to these heinous acts. In addition, could it be also detrimental to withhold information? This study will be an empirical review of media coverage in the past, to determine the impact media has on mass shootings, violence …
Family Presence During Resuscitation, Brittany Whistle
Family Presence During Resuscitation, Brittany Whistle
Scholars Week
Background:
Families want more involvement in their loved one’s care than they did just twenty years ago. Especially, in the matter of resuscitation efforts, this involvement remains controversial.
Evidence and Findings:
Based on research, theories, and multiple educated opinions, family presence during resuscitation (FPDR) needs to be implemented in hospitals. Theories by Kolcaba and Helvie demonstrate a need for comfort and positive energy around patients to enhance the healing process. Evidence has shown multiple benefits of FPDR. The patient receives a holistic approach of care, the family gains closure and feeling of participation of care, and provides a plan for …

Cultural Diversity Awareness: Perceptions Of Community Residents And Police Personnel, Vickie Minnifield Greene
Scholar Week 2016 - present
This study examined the difference in self-reported perceptions of cultural diversity awareness between two specific groups, community residents and police personnel, within a Midwestern city’s community and police department. This study also measured how their attitudes related to their likelihood to assist in enhancing the goals of community policing, which includes the prevention of crime. Literature cited demonstrates that social injustice toward African Americans and Latinos, cultural diversity ignorance, miscommunication, and lack of trust between community residents and police personnel are indicators that their relationships require positive solutions toward repairing a historically strained relationship. The Miami University Diversity Awareness Scale …

Representation Of Addiction In The Media, Lauren Gallup
Representation Of Addiction In The Media, Lauren Gallup
Scholars Week
Presenting the story of addiction in news and entertainment media presents an ethical dilemma for those doing the storytelling. This dilemma faces the ethical paradigm of Right vs. Wrong. In this research project, I focused on how addiction is presented in the media. Media representation of addiction shapes how people think about this disease and can affect legislation to support assistance for recovering addicts. This led me to determine that media has an important place in shaping how we think about addiction. In this paper, I identified how media can do a public good by accurately and ethically covering stories …

Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)
Social media has become a predominant feature in contemporary culture and it is increasingly important that scholars assess the impact and implications of its many facets. As online sharing tools like YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and others, continue to evolve, so does the way we interact with, and manipulate, these platforms – as complex tools, allowing us to freely share, create, and connect with one another. Current scholarly analysis of social media platforms, internet communities, and online content creation fails to include the perspective of the younger generation who grew up heavily influenced by social media content. While there is ample …

Media itself has always been an outlet for the public. It has been used for entertainment, information, and a societal tool from the time when it was first advancing. Sport media is a genre all its own. There has always been a gender divide in sport and sport media. For this critical study, print media sources from different outlets were analyzed to compare two female athletes against two male athletes. The athletes being compared were Serena Williams and John McEnroe, as well as Brandi Chastain and Nicolas Anelka. Each article was analyzed for how the journalist portrayed the athlete, in …

Abstract
The legal drama television series Blue Bloods, The Practice, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, The Good Wife, How to Get Away with Murder, and Ally McBealfollow the various roles of a female attorney. For this study, these six television series were analyzed in order to identify the media’s perception of female attorneys. By completing a critical analysis of the aforementioned series, a multitude of perceptions based on gender was identified. Five themes occurred from those perceptions: physical attributes, relationships, work environment, litigation tactics, and personality traits. While some of these perceptions were positive, the media …
