Most Americans have heard the story of Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery sent by Thomas Jefferson to explore the new Louisiana Purchase area from 1804 to 1806. What most people do not realize is that Jefferson also commissioned a second expedition to explore the southern areas of that new frontier. The president asked William Dunbar, a Mississippi planter/scientist/surveyor, and George Hunter, a Philadelphia chemist/apothecary, to lead that expedition on the Red, Black, and Ouachita Rivers up to the hot springs. Bess Vaughn was the daughter of Alex and Mollie Vaughn. Mollie’s maiden name was Busick, and she lived in Boston, Texas, with her sister Georgia and her brother James. Bess Vaughn and her sister Hattie grew up in Prescott, Arkansas. Bess continued to live in Prescott and married Max Bryant, while Hattie married Thomas Tedford and lived in Des Moines, Iowa.

These papers represent Bess Vaughn's personal and business activities, and include correspondence, printed material, newsclippings, financial records, and other items. World War I (WWI) letters are among the materials.

When Purdue University’s College of Education decided to offer its first fully online master’s program in Learning Design and Technology, the education librarian volunteered to find and organize all the course readings by creating a LibGuide web page with links to the readings for each course. This paper analyzes these course readings, delivered to distance education students through links to the library’s electronic holdings, between January 2012 and June 2014. It categorizes the readings as journal articles, books (or chapters in books), and other openly available scholarly resources on the web. Since this book is primarily about e-books, the analysis …

Two and a half decades into the open access (OA) movement, rapid changes in scholarly communication are creating significant demands on scholars. Today’s scholars must wrestle with meeting funder mandates for providing public access to their research, managing and preserving raw data, establishing/publishing open access journals, understanding the difference between “green OA” and “gold OA,” navigating the complicated issues around copyright and intellectual property, avoiding potentially predatory publishers, adapting their tenure plans to OA, and discovering increasing amounts of OA resources for their research and their curricular materials. Cost-per-use for electronic journals has become a common standard for judging the value of individual titles, but the reports needed to make such judgments can be complex and time consuming to create. Different options exist for collecting, collating, and reporting the necessary data. In 2013, time spent by staff at the University of Mississippi library on all of the processes to create a cost-per-use report for the library’s subscription lists was recorded and a value in staff salaries was calculated. That cost was compared to the price for outsourcing the processes to various vendors. Additionally, other libraries were asked, via …

While traditionally libraries are very good at counting (books, patrons, reference questions, etc.), the question of value can no longer be answered by quantifying things and activities. In fact, it is challenging to try to assess and assign value to the services and resources provided by libraries. Increasingly libraries are asked to communicate their value to their stakeholders more effectively by providing evidence of outcomes related to user experience and institutional mission and goals. Several library associations have recently published reports delineating the value of libraries to the constituents.

As part of its participation in the Google Books government documents scanning project, the Purdue University Libraries agreed to contribute volumes of the Congressional Serial Set (CSS). Realizing that the results would be far more useful if the individual documents within this title were cataloged separately, librarians developed procedures to create brief records and began cataloging CSS documents from the 1890s. The University of Iowa became a partner in this collaborative pilot project, and its cataloging staff used the Purdue template and procedures to create records from the CSS for individual documents from two years in the 1890s. …

Resources for College Libraries (RCL) is a subscription bibliographic database produced by Bowker (a ProQuest affiliate), Choice, and the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL). Primarily a collection development tool, the database provides titles of print and electronic books, Web sites, and databases deemed essential by subject specialists for four- and two-year college and vocational and technical school library collections. This resource is a seminal tool for library collection development, maintenance, and assessment.
