Relationship Between Autonomous Motivation And Ego-Depletion, Mark A. Heilman
Relationship Between Autonomous Motivation And Ego-Depletion, Mark A. Heilman
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Previous research has shown that exerting self-control on a demanding task can impair performance on a subsequent demanding self-control task. This phenomenon is known as ego-depletion; however, its underlying mechanisms are not well understood. Notable gaps in the literature exist regarding whether participants’ motivation levels can attenuate the depletion effect, and whether trait self-control is related. Drawing from the process model of depletion and the self-determination theory, the goal of the study was to examine whether motivational incentives in the form of autonomy can impact performance on tasks in an ego-depleted state, and the potential relationship of trait self-control. Examining The Relationship Between Emotional Intelligence And Interpersonal Forgiveness Among Internet Users, Noelle Lowry
Examining The Relationship Between Emotional Intelligence And Interpersonal Forgiveness Among Internet Users, Noelle Lowry
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Emotional Intelligence (EI) and forgiveness both involve interpreting emotional content. Empirical study of a relationship between these two constructs is lacking. This is a problem as many psychological studies infer a relationship between these two constructs. The purposes of this study were to explore whether EI and forgiveness are correlated and to identify whether predictor variables (empathy, life satisfaction, emotional management, and emotional understanding) contribute to the probability of forgiveness within an interpersonal relationship. A quantitative, nonexperimental research design, based on the theory of mind, was used to answer two research questions: Does a correlational relationship exist between the two …
Impacts Of Recreational Aviation On Wildlife: The Physiological Stress Response In White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) And Associated User Perceptions, Devin W. Landry
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Recreational aviation on public lands may negatively impact wildlife. However, land-use decisions need to balance user need with wildlife impact. We know very little about 1) how back country airstrip use affects local wildlife, or 2) attitudes and perceptions of recreational pilots toward possible management actions. For my Master’s research, I investigated how aircraft activity influenced physiological measures of stress in white-tailed deer, while also modeling how psychometrics such as wildlife attitudes and place attachment predict the willingness of recreational pilots engage in impact-mitigating behaviors. I measured physiological stress through non-invasive sampling of stress hormones in fecal samples (fecal glucocorticoid …
The Role Of Uncertainty In Categorical Perception Utilizing Statistical Learning In Robots, Nathaniel V. Powell
The Role Of Uncertainty In Categorical Perception Utilizing Statistical Learning In Robots, Nathaniel V. Powell
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
At the heart of statistical learning lies the concept of uncertainty.
Similarly, embodied agents such as robots
and animals must likewise address uncertainty, as sensation
is always only a partial reflection of reality. This
thesis addresses the role that uncertainty can play in
a central building block of intelligence: categorization.
Cognitive agents are able to perform tasks like categorical perception
through physical interaction (active categorical perception; ACP),
or passively at a distance (distal categorical perception; DCP).
It is possible that the former scaffolds the learning of
the latter. However, it is unclear whether DCP indeed scaffolds
ACP in humans and …
