Hazing: What Ohio High School Teachers, Coaches And Administrators Need To Know, Corinne M. Daprano, Meghan Kenney, Peter J. Titlebaum, Michael Triola

Corinne M. Daprano

Once thought to be primarily an issue of concern for university fraternities and sororities, hazing has emerged as a disturbing trend with an increase in the number of incidents involving high school student athletes. High school coaches, athletic administrators, and teachers must understand that initiation rites of sport teams can sometimes spiral out of control with grave legal and financial consequences for student athletes and school officials. The purposes of this article are to: Define hazing and review the history of anti-hazing legislation in the United States of America. Describe hazing laws in the State of Ohio. Review current research …

Comparing Division Ia Scholarship And Non-Scholarship Student-Athletes: A Discriminant Analysis Of Academic Performance, Lisa Melanie Rubin Dec 2012

Comparing Division Ia Scholarship And Non-Scholarship Student-Athletes: A Discriminant Analysis Of Academic Performance, Lisa Melanie Rubin

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Many research studies have examined the academic performance and graduation rates of college student-athletes. The limited focus on scholarship student-athletes has overlooked the majority of NCAA student-athletes, those participating in collegiate athletic programs without athletic scholarships. Therefore, this study contributes to a gap in the literature about non-scholarship student-athletes. The following dissertation examined the academic performance, time-to-degree, and demographic and profile characteristics of Division IA scholarship and non-scholarship student-athletes. The theoretical framework for this study was work motivation viewing athletic scholarships as extrinsic rewards. The researcher applied descriptive discriminant analysis utilizing secondary data to compare scholarship and non-scholarship student-athletes across …

An Empirical Examination Of University Intercollegiate Athletic Expenditures, Jeffrey L. Stinson, Adam Marquardt, Joshua Chandley

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Business

To date, little empirical work has examined the institutional returns associated with athletic program investments. While intangible brand effects are commonly cited, such as athletics serving as the perceptual “front porch” of the institution, direct examination of the effects of athletic programs has often been narrow in scope. Within this study, we assess the contributions of investment in athletics as compared to other areas of institutional investment, on important institutional outcomes. Data for the study was collected from two datasets, the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) and the Equity in Athletics dataset. Fixed effects models for NCAA Football Bowl …

The 2010 Racial And Gender Report Card: National Basketball Association, Richard Lapchick, Christopher Kaiser, Christina Russell, Natalie Welch

Faculty Publications

The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport (TIDES) at the University of Central Florida publishes the Racial and Gender Report Card to indicate areas of improvement, stagnation, and regression in the racial and gender composition of professional and college sports personnel and to contribute to the improvement of integration in front office and college athletics department positions. Each year the National Basketball Association (NBA) has made progress in almost all categories examined for both race and gender.

The NBA continues to set the standard for the industry as the leader on issues related to race and gender hiring practices. …

To Honor And Glorify God': The Role Of Religion In One Intercollegiate Athletic Culture, Peter J. Schroeder, Jay Paredes Scribner Jan 2006

To Honor And Glorify God': The Role Of Religion In One Intercollegiate Athletic Culture, Peter J. Schroeder, Jay Paredes Scribner

Eberhardt School of Business Faculty Articles

Numerous events have provided evidence that the cultural values and assumptions of intercollegiate athletic departments are often incongruent with those of their host institutions. This discrepancy has even been evident in Christian institutions which seek to integrate faith into the learning experience. Using the organizational culture perspective, this study sought to determine how religion influenced the culture of one intercollegiate athletics department. The study took place at a highly selective evangelical Christian college with a nationally competitive athletic department. Data were collected through interviews with 19 campus leaders, observation of cultural events and document analysis. Analysis occurred qualitatively through a …
