Achieving Health And Safety In The Building And Repair Of Ships And Boats, William Murphy, James Nicholson, Valerie Carter, Jane Crouch

Bureau of Labor Education

In 2002 there were over 5,500 fatalities reported by industries in the United States. A total of 4.7 million injuries and illnesses were reported in private sector workplaces in 2002, resulting in a rate of 5.3 cases per 100 equivalent fulltime workers. The Liberty Mutual 2002 Workplace Safety Index estimates that direct costs for occupational injuries in 1999 rose to $40.1 billion, with indirect costs reaching over $200 billion. Shipyard work is very hazardous, with an injury-illness incidence rate of 16.6 that is more than twice that of construction and general industry.4 While boatyard work is more diverse, and usually …

Amateurism, Eligibility, And Doublespeak, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It's difficult for me to acknowledge that in the case of Mike Williams of the University of Southern California the NCAA may finally have done something right. Williams applied for reinstatement of his eligibility to play football at USC following the federal court decisions that virtually overturned the lower court decisions allowing underclassmen to make themselves eligible for the National Football League Draft.

The Antecedents Of Value Creation In Singapore Corporation, Wee Liang Tan, Teck Meng Tan Sep 2004

The Antecedents Of Value Creation In Singapore Corporation, Wee Liang Tan, Teck Meng Tan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The impetus for value creation has led to greater interest in encouraging entrepreneurship within organizations (intrapreneurship). The intrapreneurship literature reveals general agreement that organizational entrepreneurship flourishes where the environmental conditions of an organization are most favorable. However, there is little empirical research examining the relationship of the organizational climate and the intentions of employees to be intrapreneurs, and their actual participation in such activities. This paper reports a study on the elements of organizational climate on intrapreneurship attitudes, intentions and actions on the part of middle managers in corporations in Singapore.

The Making Of An Innovator, Hian Teck Hoon Sep 2004

The Making Of An Innovator, Hian Teck Hoon

Research Collection School Of Economics

Innovators experiment with things to come up with new ideas to improve the quality of existing products, develop differentiated or new products and re-organise business processes to lower costs. In a big corporation, there might be a whole R&D department where innovators are employed to design new blueprints so the company can constantly make new offerings. But innovators can also be found in small enterprises tinkering with recipes, for example, to win new customers. Innovators no doubt derive pleasure from their creative work. Yet, in modern economies, they must be employed in a firm that successfully translates their innovative activity …

Athens: The Beauty Of Playfulness, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Amidst the controversies, the crass commercialism, and the artificiality of the staged teledrama of the Olympics, the main point can too easily get lost. This is a sporting event involving athletes seeking to perform at the highest level, individually or as a team, as they compete against one another, themselves, and the challenges of the sport. What this offers is a drama of its own, showcasing the sporting spirit and offering each of us a window on the possibilities of human achievement.

A Unified Logical Model For Cbr-Based E-Commerce Systems, Zhaohao Sun, G. Finnie Aug 2004

A Unified Logical Model For Cbr-Based E-Commerce Systems, Zhaohao Sun, G. Finnie

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

This paper will examine new issues resulting from applying CBR in e-commerce and propose a unified logical model for CBR-based e-commerce systems (CECS) which consists of three cycles and covers almost all activities of applying CBR in e-commerce. This paper also decomposes case adaptation into problem adaptation and solution adaptation, which not only improves the understanding of case adaptation in the traditional CBR, but also facilitates the refinement of activity of CBR in e-commerce and intelligent support for e-commerce. It then investigates CBR-based product negotiation. This paper thus gives insight into how to use CBR in e-commerce and how to …

Paul Hamm, Trevor Graham, And Others, Richard C. Crepeau Aug 2004

Paul Hamm, Trevor Graham, And Others, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It seems as if at every Olympic games there comes a point when there is a meltdown of one sort or another. In these games which are designed to produce international cooperation and understanding, nationalism more often than not raises its head in anger. Designed to promote friendship and good sportsmanship there is often a moment, or several moments, in which sportsmanship seems to leave the venue entirely.

The Athens Olympics Open, Richard C. Crepeau Aug 2004

The Athens Olympics Open, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

There is no doubt what I will remember most about the 2004 Olympic Games. It will not be the opening ceremonies, nor the historic setting of Athens, nor the amazing performance by Paul Hamm in the Men's Gymnastics all-around when he snatched victory from the jaws of defeat and left the arena with a gold medal. Unfortunately, it will be Hurricane Charley that left myself and many of my fellow Orlandoans without power and therefore unable to see the opening ceremonies. For some it is still not possible to see the games, as they remain without power in the sweltering …

The Impact Of Health Information And Demographic Changes On Aggregate Meat Demand, Christiane Schroeter, Ken Foster Aug 2004

The Impact Of Health Information And Demographic Changes On Aggregate Meat Demand, Christiane Schroeter, Ken Foster

Agribusiness

Over the past few decades, U.S. meat consumption patterns have changed. Figure 1 shows the U.S. per-capita meat consumption from 1970-1999. Consumers have increased their total meat consumption by 9.3% from 1970 to 1999, however, the composition of the meat consumption changed as well. While beef consumption has consistently decreased since 1985 - that of poultry and fish have increased. Per capita pork consumption has not changed on average from the 1970’s to the 1990’s.

The Impact Of Health Information And Women In The Work Force On Aggregate Meat Demand, Christiane Schroeter, Ken Foster

Agribusiness

Over the past few decades, U.S. meat consumption patterns have changed. Changes in food consumption patterns can be the result of changing demographic characteristics, changing lifestyles, increasing health awareness, and nutritional concerns. Prior research suggests that these factors have significant influence on the demand for meat (Capps and Schmitz; Kinnucan, Hsia, and Jackson). The recent interest in low carbohydrate diets and the association with increased red meat consumption is an anecdotal example of this phenomenon.

Sweet And Sour: Accounting For South Sea Islanders Labour At A North Queensland Sugar Mill In The Late 1800s, H. J. Irvine Aug 2004

Sweet And Sour: Accounting For South Sea Islanders Labour At A North Queensland Sugar Mill In The Late 1800s, H. J. Irvine

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

The sugar industry in the colony of Queensland (Australia) began in the late 1800s, initially following the plantation model. Since slavery had been abolished, and it was believed that white men were incapable of working in the tropics, a number of sugar entrepreneurs recruited South Sea islanders to provide the labour necessary for clearing the dense tropical vegetation and establishing cane growing as an economically viable industry. It is estimated that from the early 1860s until 1904, over 60,000 islanders were recruited from more than eighty islands to work as indentured labourers. In spite of their huge contribution to the …

The Impact Of Market Structure On Agricultural Technology Transfer, Charles F. Nicholson Jul 2004

The Impact Of Market Structure On Agricultural Technology Transfer, Charles F. Nicholson

Agribusiness

An agribusiness focus has emerged in public discussions as way to enhance agricultural production in Indonesia and to improve sustainable income for farmers. The focus has led to increased attention on marketing. Marketing agricultural products via processing technologies can indeed address national objectives of rural poverty alleviation. REI-Indonesia observed that limited marketing alternatives are frequently mentioned by farmers as a significant constraint. In Indonesia, a significant amount of institutional support currently exists for the ideas presented in this paper. In particular, one should consider the multifaceted mission of agricultural development in Indonesia, which includes: (a) policies that encourage competition and, …

‘Paying The Price’: Impact On Subordinate Potential And Expectations In The New Bureaucracy, George K. Kriflik, R. Jones Jul 2004

‘Paying The Price’: Impact On Subordinate Potential And Expectations In The New Bureaucracy, George K. Kriflik, R. Jones

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

It is argued that many types of bureaucratic reform have entailed an extension or intensification of, not a departure from, bureaucratic control. This paper reports the findings of a qualitative case study which examines the impact of ‘new bureaucratic’ structures and systems on the performance and expectations of organisational subordinates. Such subordinates question the ‘price’ that has to be paid by themselves to achieve strategic visions devised and implemented by remote and faceless senior executives. This price is reflected in subordinates’ perceptions of the extent to which ‘cleaned-up’ bureaucratic processes impact on the achievement of their overall potential. Subordinates place …

Plagiarism: Let The Policy Fix The Crime, H. W. Collier, R. Perrin, C. B. Mcgowan Jul 2004

Plagiarism: Let The Policy Fix The Crime, H. W. Collier, R. Perrin, C. B. Mcgowan

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

Plagiarism is considered to be an unacceptable act, a crime, in today’s University. This is reinforced by the Latin and Greek origins of the word, i.e., meaning to ‘plunder’ or ‘kidnap’. An Australian Vice-Chancellor was recently asked to resign following public allegations and findings of his plagiarism. Universities adopt and publicise policies to illustrate what they expect from their students. We posit that while some students plagiarise for reasons endogenous to those students, others do so as a result of poorly designed and constructed assignments and assessment tasks. From a simple example involving the use of the plagiarism detection software …

A Model Of Financial Performance Analysis Adapted For Nonprofit Organisations, A. Abraham Jul 2004

A Model Of Financial Performance Analysis Adapted For Nonprofit Organisations, A. Abraham

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

Measurement of financial performance by ratio analysis helps identify organisational strengths and weaknesses by detecting financial anomalies and focusing attention on issues of organisational importance. Given that the mission of a nonprofit organisation is the reason its existence, it is appropriate to focus on financial resources in their relationship to mission. Turk et al (1995) suggested that the key to analysis and measurement of the financial and operational control and impact is related to the central question: What is the organisation’s mission? Their model reflects the interrelationship between a series of questions about the mission and the financial resourcing and …

Cost Of Organic Pork Production: A Seasonal Analysis And Needed Price Premium For Continuous Production, James Kliebenstein, Sean P. Hurley, Ben Larson, Mark Honeyman Jul 2004

Cost Of Organic Pork Production: A Seasonal Analysis And Needed Price Premium For Continuous Production, James Kliebenstein, Sean P. Hurley, Ben Larson, Mark Honeyman

Agribusiness

Niche markets of agricultural products are experiencing rapid growth. One such niche market is organic pork. Organic pork production is a relatively new and expanding segment of the pork industry. Similar to some other niche markets, it has also experienced rapid growth (Organic Trade Association). It is well known that the cost of organic pork production is greater than for traditional pork production due to increased feed costs and decreased swine performance. The industry has dealt with this by paying premiums to induce producers to produce the organic product. However, it is not clear on what level or how the …

Household-Level Impacts Of Dairy Cow Ownership In Coastal Kenya, Charles F. Nicholson, Philip K. Thornton, Rahab W. Muinga Jul 2004

Household-Level Impacts Of Dairy Cow Ownership In Coastal Kenya, Charles F. Nicholson, Philip K. Thornton, Rahab W. Muinga

Agribusiness

This study uses heteroskedastic Tobit and Censored Least Absolute Deviations models to examine the impacts of dairy cow ownership on selected outcomes for a sample of 184 households in coastal Kenya. The outcomes examined include gross household cash income, gross non-agricultural income, consumption of dairy products, time allocated to cattlerelated tasks, number of labourers hired and total wage payments to hired labourers. The number of dairy cows owned has a large and statistically significant impact on household cash income; each cow owned increased income by at least 53% of the mean total income of households without dairy cows. Dairy cow …
