The War Of The Worlds, Wells, And The Fallacy Of Empire, John C. Hawley
The War Of The Worlds, Wells, And The Fallacy Of Empire, John C. Hawley
English
In his summary of the contemporary reviews of The War of the Worlds (1898), William J. Scheick notes that their extensive number suggests that readers now recognized that Wells was an emerging writer whom they could not ignore. "There were, again," Scheick notes, "reservations about slipshod style, hasty plotting, vulgar content and cheap effects; but these doubts were overrun by the general verdict that this romance was one of the most ingenious stories of the year and the best work to date of an author who was one of the most original of the younger English novelists" (Scheick 5). Earlier …

Enabling The Asian American Electorate: 2003 Voter Registration In Eleven Massachusetts Cities And Towns, Paul Watanabe, Michael Liu
Institute for Asian American Studies Publications
For many in Massachusetts’ rapidly growing Asian American community, political participation is a vehicle to expand opportunities. Involvement in the selection of public officials and casting votes on critical issues are important manifestations of civic engagement. This participation, while it may offer opportunities for Asian Americans, also poses some significant challenges. In order to vote, adult residents must be United States citizens by birth or naturalization, but that is not enough. Citizens must also be registered to vote. This report provides the most detailed information on voter registration and Asian Americans in Massachusetts ever assembled. It includes analysis by the …

Dr. Benjamin-Alvarado conducted a comprehensive survey, which he administered in Argentina and Cuba previously, later in 2005 to assess Mexican export controls.

Corrective Justice, Equal Opportunity, And The Legacy Of Slavery And Jim Crow, David B. Lyons
Corrective Justice, Equal Opportunity, And The Legacy Of Slavery And Jim Crow, David B. Lyons
Faculty Scholarship
Chattel slavery was a brutally cruel, repressive, and exploitative system of racial subjugation. When it was abolished, the former slaveholders owed the freedmen compensation for the terrible wrongs of enslavement. Ex-slaves sought reparations, especially in the form of land, but few received any sort of recompense. The wrongs they suffered were never repaired.
No one alive today can be held accountable for the wrongs of chattel slavery, and those who might now be called upon to pay reparations were not even born until many decades after slavery ended. For some scholars, the lack of accountable parties makes current reparations claims …

The Nfl And Its Money, Richard C. Crepeau
The Nfl And Its Money, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Now that the NFL has refocused following Towelgate in the midst of what is developing as a most interesting season on the field, it might be worth going back to two stories that flew just beneath the radar over the past few weeks. These, of course, involved money, because we are talking about the NFL Money Machine, which continues to validate Al Davis' wisdom from 1978 when he noted in the wake of a lucrative television contract that "any dummy can make money operating a pro football club."

Thanksgiving, Richard C. Crepeau
Thanksgiving, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
(As with all American traditions if it happened once or twice it is one. Therefore I present my traditional Thanksgiving piece) The History of Thanksgiving and of Football both go back into the Middle Ages, and so it may not be so strange that the two would become intertwined in modern America.
