Comparative Markedness (Long Version), John J. Mccarthy
Comparative Markedness (Long Version), John J. Mccarthy
John J. McCarthy
The markedness constraints of classic Optimality Theory assign violation-marks to output candidates without reference to the input or to other candidates. This paper explores an alternative conception of markedness that is comparative: markedness constraints compare the candidate under evaluation with another candidate, the most faithful one. Comparative constraints distinguish two situations: the candidate under evaluation contains an instance of a marked structure that is also present in the fully-faithful candidate; or the candidate under evaluation contains an instance of a marked structure that is not present in the fully faithful candidate. The empirical consequences of comparative markedness are explored, including …
On Targeted Constraints And Cluster Simplification, John J. Mccarthy
On Targeted Constraints And Cluster Simplification, John J. Mccarthy
John J. McCarthy
In his article 'Consonant cluster neutralisation and targeted constraints', Wilson (2001) proposes a far-reaching revision of Optimality Theory to accommodate targeted constraints, which compare candidates differing only in certain specific ways. Targeted constraints, it is argued, can explain why cluster-simplification processes affect the first member of a cluster but never the more marked member of a cluster. In this remark, I show that this argument encounters difficulties once it has been embedded in a fuller picture of constraint interaction. Some general properties of the targeted-constraints model are also discussed.

The Place Of The Oromo Diaspora In The Oromo National Movement: Lessons From The Agency Of The "Old" African Diaspora In The United States, Asafa Jalata
Asafa Jalata
Just as European and African slave traders merchandised Africans and created the old African diaspora, successive colonial and authoritarian regimes2 of Ethiopia forced some Oromos out of their homeland, Oromia, and caused them to settle in the West. The displaced Oromo entered the United States as one of the "new" African diaspora groups four centuries after the old African diaspora began to be created. In the process, the Oromo diaspora emerged on the world stage. Whereas the old African diaspora lived under racial slavery and segregation for almost three centuries, the new African diaspora communities such as the Oromo came …
Meridian Hill Park: The Making Of An American Neoclassical Landscape, Elizabeth Brabec
Meridian Hill Park: The Making Of An American Neoclassical Landscape, Elizabeth Brabec
Elizabeth Brabec
The neoclassical design was the dominant design movement in landscape architecture at the turn of the last century, dictating the form and design of public parks for most of the first half of the twentieth century. Meridian Hill Park, located just north of the White ouse in Washington, DC, is considered the most ambitious neoclassical park ever conceived in the United States. The paper provides an overview of the design development of the park, illustrating how classical design precedents were used to create a contemporary neo-classical park.

"Collaborative Support For The School Of Education: A Joint Instructional Technology And Library Needs Assessment Program.", Terry S. Taylor, H Jean Bryan, Mickey Ann Hinojosa
Terry S Taylor
DePaul's School of Education was the first implementation of a Needs Assessment designed jointly by the university's Instructional Technology Development (ITD) area and the University Libraries. The goals for the Needs Assessment were to identify areas in which an expanded, unified and comprehensive faculty development training and support package would both address faculty's perceived needs while also improving adoption of existing instructional technologies and/or services. The Library's education bibliographer and the ITD consultant for education interviewed faculty representing a cross section of departments and programs as well as technological expertise. The results were analyzed; issues were sorted according to faculty …

Scholar Or Baller In American Higher Education? A Visual Elicitation And Qualitative Assessment Of The Studentathlete's Mindset, Keith Harrison
Scholar Or Baller In American Higher Education? A Visual Elicitation And Qualitative Assessment Of The Studentathlete's Mindset, Keith Harrison
Dr. C. Keith Harrison
Eminent scholar Harry Edwards (2000) has articulated three major realities of African American males in sports: a) The presumption of innate, race-linked black athletic superiority and intellectual deficiency; b) media propaganda portraying sports as a broadly accessible route to African American social and economic mobility; and c) a lack of comparably visible, high-prestige African American role models beyond the sports arena. Driven by labeling theory (Becker, 1963; Goffman, 1959), eight African American male student athletes were surveyed and interviewed. The last two points of Edwards' scholarship were investigated. "We have pretty good historical data and quantitative data about African American …

African American Racial Identity And Sport, Keith Harrison
Dr. C. Keith Harrison
The purpose of this paper is to attempt to synthesize and apply African American racial identity theory and related research to the development of sport and physical activity patterns and preferences in African American youth. Historically the African American over-representation in particular sports phenomena has been examined genetically, anthropocentrically, physiologically, sociologically, and psychologically. The profusion of explanations is a testimony to the complexity of this phenomena. This manuscript provides yet another compelling perspective. Cross [(1995) The psychology of Nigrescence: revising the Cross Model, in: J.G. PONTEROTTO et al. (Eds) Handbook of Multicultural Counseling (Thousand Oaks, CA, Sage)] outlines the metamorphic …

September 11 Attacks And Surviving Same-Sex Partners: Defining Family Through Tragedy, Nancy J. Knauer
September 11 Attacks And Surviving Same-Sex Partners: Defining Family Through Tragedy, Nancy J. Knauer
Nancy J. Knauer
The September 11 relief efforts present a unique prism through which to view the status of same-sex relationships and to consider which families count when the United States is supposedly at its most generous, most united, and most injured. On a basic human level, would the nation grieve for Peggy Neff, who lost her partner of 18 years when Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon, as it had for the widow of a fire fighter? Would Neff be eligible to file a claim with the multi-billion dollar federal September 11 Victim Compensation Fund, which Congress established to compensate victims and …

The Shield Of Achiles, State, Security And New Wars (El Escudo De Aquiles, Estado, Seguridad Y Nuevas Guerras) Spanish, Fernando Estrada
Fernando Estrada
At this stage of the manifestation of irregular warfare conflicts becomes porous, bottom to top and back. The security of states depends on a weak shield vulnerable to unforeseen terrorist actions. This will not come labeled by a single identity but multiplied their masks, may be a timid bystander who walks the streets at noon sweater dress with a teacher dressed and slow. The security policy imposes severe restrictions on basic freedoms, including perhaps most importantly, individual privacy or family.

Introduction To The Middle East: Syllabus, Paul J. Rich
Paul J. Rich
This is a syllabus for Mexican undergraduate students, some of whom had real hurtles with English. In addition to the listed reading, Spanish translations of the Koran (technically the Holy Koran cannot be translated) were distributed so each had a copy. This was referenced during the lectures. Map work was one of the core demands.

Cliometrics Of Freemasonry, Paul J. Rich
Paul J. Rich
Attention to the membership statistics of fraternal groups has been given much importance because of the use of such figures by Robert Putnam and others in their contributions to the so-called Bowling Alone debate over the alleged delcine of American associationalism. The subject is much more obtuse and complex than has been appreciated, and this paper touches on what could be the focus of many doctoral theses.

National Differences In Freemasonry: The Gap Between America And Mexico, Paul J. Rich
Paul J. Rich
The Columbia book Freemasonry on Both Sides of the Atlantic included a number of papers which are found in Selected Works, suitably -- one hopes -- aged and vetted and amended. This is one on the national differences in Masonic practice, which led me to remark that we should talk not about Freemasonry but about Freemasonries.

The Fall 2002 issue of The Medallion of Phi Beta Delta include several articles about me and by me which throw some light on the activities of Greek honor societies. Phi Beta Kappa, whose national offices are located almost across from the Policy Studies Organization home in Washington, has never been willing to have chapters outside of the United States. That of course is an opportunity for Phi Beta Delta, as it is resolutely international and has managed to start chapters in several countries.

This email exchange speaks for itself. The fact that it was a tenured professor is a sad comment on standards. I thought the double plagiarism, i.e. striping the attributions from quotes that were in the plagiarized text, had a certain originality. The gentleman's subsequent career has fortunately been unfortunate.

No Black Names On The Letterhead? Efficient Discrimination And The South African Legal Profession, Lisa R. Pruitt
No Black Names On The Letterhead? Efficient Discrimination And The South African Legal Profession, Lisa R. Pruitt
Lisa R Pruitt
Although there have long been black lawyers in South Africa, during apartheid only a handful joined the ranks of the country’s large commercial firms. Now, in the post-apartheid period, these firms are keenly aware of a range of economic and political incentives to hire black attorneys, and most are doing so at a record pace. Very few black attorneys, however, are enduring the path to partnership in these firms. Based on more than seventy-five interviews conducted in South Africa in 1999 and 2000, this Article both documents and critically examines the reasons for black attrition. While firms’ incentives to integrate …
