Whether It’S Coins, Fringe, Or Just Stuff That’S Sparkly': Aesthetics And Utility In A Tribal Fusion Belly Dance Troupe’S Costumes, Jeana Jorgensen
Jeana Jorgensen
As both a scholar and a belly dancer, I believe that belly dance is recognizable on aesthetic grounds. In addition to the movements that belly dancers typically perform—muscle isolations, undulations, graceful hand motions and turns, and lots of hip work—belly dancers wear costumes that are visually identifiable as belly dance costumes. While this description may seem tautological, there are recognizable standards both in the public sphere and among dancers for what constitutes the belly dance image—or images, as belly dance is a diverse phenomenon that encompasses teaching, learning, performing, watching, socializing, and costuming.

Understanding ‘The Body’ In Fairy Tales, Scott Weingart, Jeana Jorgensen
Understanding ‘The Body’ In Fairy Tales, Scott Weingart, Jeana Jorgensen
Jeana Jorgensen
Computational analysis and feminist theory generally aren’t the first things that come to mind in association with fairy tales. This unlikely pairing, however, can lead to important insights regarding how cultures understand and represent themselves. For example, by looking at how characters are described in European fairy tales, we’ve been able to show how Western culture tends to bias the younger generation, especially the men. While that result probably won’t shock anyone more than passingly familiar with the Western world, the method of reaching these results allows us to look at cultural biases in a new light. Our study and …

Reason, Tradition, And The Good: Alasdair Macintyre's Reason Of Tradition And Frankfurt School Critical Theory, Jeffery Nicholas
Reason, Tradition, And The Good: Alasdair Macintyre's Reason Of Tradition And Frankfurt School Critical Theory, Jeffery Nicholas
Jeffery Nicholas
In Reason, Tradition, and the Good, Jeffery L. Nicholas addresses the failure of reason in modernity to bring about a just society, a society in which people can attain fulfillment. Developing the critical theory of the Frankfurt School, Nicholas argues that we rely too heavily on a conception of rationality that is divorced from tradition and, therefore, incapable of judging ends. Without the ability to judge ends, we cannot engage in debate about the good life or the proper goods that we as individuals and as a society should pursue. Nicholas claims that the project of enlightenment—defined as the promotion …
Commonising The Enclosure: Online Games And Reforming Intellectual Property Regimes, Christopher Moore
Commonising The Enclosure: Online Games And Reforming Intellectual Property Regimes, Christopher Moore
Christopher L Moore Dr
Online computer gamers are a creative bunch, from the mayhem of first-person shooters (FPS) to the more social experiences of massive multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPG), gamers are producing new content for their favourite titles at an amazing rate. This paper explores the rewriting of the boundaries in the production and ownership of intellectual property in the computer games industry. The purpose is to examine the potential for computer game studies to contribute to an understanding of an alternative intellectual property regime known as the commons. This paper will explore how computer games users establish commons-like formations, specific to the …

Suicidal Ideation And Help-Negation: Not Just Hopelessness Or Prior Help, Frank Deane, Coralie Wilson, Joseph Ciarrochi
joseph Ciarrochi
This article reports the first study of its kind to specifically examine help-negation for suicidal thoughts (i.e., the inverse relationship between help-seeking intentions for suicidal thinking and levels of suicidal ideation) in a non-clinical university sample. The study establishes the existence of the phenomenon in individuals before levels of suicidal ideation become acute and raises numerous implications for national and international mental health policy development, clinical practice, and directions for prevention and early intervention.
The Increasing Incidence Of Suicide: Economic Development, Individualism, And Social Integration, Gregory Scott, Joseph Ciarrochi, Frank Deane
The Increasing Incidence Of Suicide: Economic Development, Individualism, And Social Integration, Gregory Scott, Joseph Ciarrochi, Frank Deane
joseph Ciarrochi
Despite significant improvement in physical health, suicide continues to represent a significant burden in the economically advanced countries. Given that the causes of suicide are not fully known, and that suicide cannot be predicted nor prevented at the individual level, national suicide rates might best be reduced by reducing the overall number of people exposed to suicide risk factors. However, economic development promotes individualism and low social integration, both of which increase suicide risk. For example, high female labor force participation and divorce, indicative of low social integration, are associated with higher suicide rates. Similarly, there appear to be social …

Can Hopelessness And Adolescents' Beliefs And Attitudes About Seeking Help Account For Help Negation?, Coralie Wilson, Joseph Ciarrochi, Frank Deane
joseph Ciarrochi
This article reports the first time the help-negation relationship for suicidal thoughts (i.e., the inverse relationship between help-seeking intentions for suicidal thinking and levels of suicidal ideation) has been specifically examined, and established, in a non-clinical adolescent sample. The study raises major implications for national and international suicide prevention policy development, clinical practice and strategies for ongoing prevention and early intervention

Development Of The Levels Of Emotional Awareness Scale For Children (Leas-C), Joseph Ciarrochi, Frank Deane, Jane Bajgar, Richard Lane
joseph Ciarrochi
A performance-based assessment of the structure and complexity of emotional awareness was developed, the Levels of Emotional Awareness Scale for Children (LEAS-C). A pilot study (N=6, ages 9-12, M(age) =10.2 years) was conducted to construct, trial, and select scenarios suitable for the scale. A larger validity study (N=51, ages 10-11, M(age) =10.3 years) examined the relationship between the LEAS-C and two emotion knowledge tasks: emotion expressions and emotion comprehension; two verbal tasks: vocabulary and verbal productivity; and a cognitive developmental measure: the Parental Descriptions Scale (PDS). Gender differences in LEAS-C performance were also examined. The LEAS-C was significantly related to …

The theme of this volume is emerging issues in disability studies. To the extent that disability studies is a relatively new field, new issues are constantly emerging and the discipline could hardly be characterized as in a state of "normal science," to borrow a phrase from Thomas Kuhn. Too, since the field of disability studies is interdisciplinary, new issues constantly emerge as researchers synthesize concepts and approaches from various more traditional disciplines (e.g., sociology, political science, psychology, law).

2014 Journalism Graduate Skills For The Professional Workplace: Expectations From Journalism Professionals And Educators, Bernard Mccoy
2014 Journalism Graduate Skills For The Professional Workplace: Expectations From Journalism Professionals And Educators, Bernard Mccoy
Bernard R. McCoy
With 2015 graduations approaching, accuracy, ethical principles, and good news judgment were identified as top skills college journalism graduates should possess for the professional workplace, according to a national survey of journalism educators and professionals. There are sharp differences, though, between respondent groups over how well college journalism programs are doing preparing journalism graduates for journalism careers, as well as the perceived importance of social media, mobile, and digital reporting skills. The survey asked journalism professionals and educators to rank skills and experiences journalism graduates need for the professional workplace. Respondents included 665 professional journalism managers, non-managers, and educators. Respondents …

In A Perilous Hour: The Public Address Of John F. Kennedy, Steven Goldzwig, George Dionisopoulos
Steven Goldzwig
This first book-length critical analysis of Kennedy's public address defines how he aroused Americans to rise to the opportunities and challenges that he defined for them. This rigorously researched study offers an in-depth analysis of the development of President Kennedy as a public speaker and a balanced view of his civil rights, foreign policy, presidential, and other types of speeches. Eight speech texts accompany the analysis. This reference and teaching tool also offers a selected chronology of major speeches along with a bibliography of important primary and secondary sources. Designed for students, teachers, and professionals in the fields of rhetoric, …

¡Probar La Gratuidad! Avital Ronell Y Fiódor Dostoyevski A Propósito De Los Créditos Condonables Del Icetex (To Test Gratuity: Avital Ronell And Fyodor Dostoyevsky In Relation To Student Loans In Colombia), Andrés Henao Castro

Capturing The Glimpse: Revelations On Creative Manoeuvres, Lynda Hawryluk, Leni Shilton

Creativity involves revelation: a moment of recognition, a coming into knowledge. These moments take many forms, and are inherently individualistic. They contain shifts in perspective, and provide a turning point in the creative process. The authors of this paper access physical landscapes to precipitate these moments. Our creative manoeuvres are located in what for us are sites of longing and belonging. The landscapes are geographically isolated places; deserts and the bush, in largely ignored country. What eventuates from these moments are what we’re referring to as glimpses, an awakening of the senses and a growing appreciation of awareness: the way …
