The idea of a Journal of Western Archives began in the early 2000s after plans were being made for a super regional meeting in Las Vegas, NV. It was during this collaborative time that University Archivists Gordon Daines proposed an idea to then Conference of Inter-Mountain Archivists President John Murphy. Gordon wanted to establish a journal that would be for archivists working in the western United States. He noticed that as a researcher himself at BYU that archivists in the western United States didn’t publish as much as archivists in the eastern United States.
In 2002, Gordon approached CIMA about …

Providing Enhanced Access For The Oregon State University College Catalogs : A Case Study, Susan A. Kunda, Elizabeth A. Nielsen
Journal of Western Archives
The academic catalog is a vital record for colleges and universities. Until the late 1980s, Oregon State University catalogs were published, distributed and archived solely in print format. With the advent of web and digital technologies, the Oregon State University Registrar’s Office also began placing an electronic version of the most recent catalogs online, while the Oregon State University Libraries provided access to earlier versions of the catalog through a subscription to College Source®, an online vendor for academic catalogs.
In 2006, the Registrar’s Office was looking for a home for its archive of digital files, while the escalating cost …

University And Public Libraries Receive Connecting To Collections
Georgia Library Quarterly
The article reports that 21 libraries, museums and archives in Georgia have been selected to receive the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) Connecting to Collections Bookshelf. According to Dr. Anne-Imelda Radice, director of the IMLS in Washington, D.C., the bookshelf provides museums, libraries and archives essential instructions on how to rescue treasures of yesteryear that they hold in trust. The contents of the bookshelf were selected by a blue-ribbon panel of conservation experts. The bookshelf includes an essential set of books, online resources and a user's guide that can profoundly affect the ability of small libraries and museums …
How To Be A Depository Library Without Being A Depository Library: Adding Records For Electronic Government Documents To The Library Catalog, James T. Shaw
Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Judith Russell, the Superintendent of Documents of the U.S. Government Printing Office, remarked at the ACRL National Conference in March 2005:
"With 95% of the new titles added to the Federal Depository Library Program available online, every library now has the ability to access a wide array of government information for its patrons at no charge. Understanding what is already available--and what is coming soon--can help each library plan for the integration of electronic government information into its reference and public services" (Assuring Access).
Electronic distribution of government documents has opened more avenues for access to government information, but libraries …

Low Tech And High Tech: The Spectrum Of Special Collections Use In A Technological Institute, Anne A. Salter, Marilyn Williamson
The Southeastern Librarian
The gradual expansion of the Georgia Institute of Technology ‘s Library and Special Collection has resulted in a unique and outstanding science and technological research facility. The process was expanded by a number of individuals who dedicated their professional years to improving the holdings. Unique among these treasures is the first edition of Newton’s Principia. Collecting, preserving, and utilizing the new technologies to expand access to this outstanding collection has proved challenging. The primary materials, carefully collected over the years, are being protected and made available through traditional means; while at the same time technological advances are being utilized to …

Internet Infoglut And Invisible Ink: Spamdexing Search Engines With Meta Tags, Ira Nathenson
Ira Steven Nathenson
This Article addresses 'spamdexing,' namely, the practice of stuffing invisible keywords into webpages in order to try to get more favorable listings with search engines. For instance, some website owners will stuff the trademarks of competitors into a webpage’s code, particularly by using 'meta tags,' indexing keywords that can be hidden in a webpage’s source code. Although meta tags are not typically viewed by users, the code can be read by search engines, with the result that webpages may be improperly boosted in search engine rankings. Such practices can confuse the public and have also spurred trademark lawsuits. But the …
The Lesbian And Gay Past: An Interpretive Battleground, Polly Thistlethwaite
The Lesbian And Gay Past: An Interpretive Battleground, Polly Thistlethwaite
Publications and Research
The lesbian and gay past is an interpretive battleground that mainstream archives have refused to enter, assuming few risks in collecting, naming, or identifying archival collections. At the same time, libraries offer up worlds to those who work to unearth the secrets there.
The New York Public Library's 1994 "Becoming Visible" exhibit trumpeted The Arrival of lesbian and gay history to New York's cultural mainstream. The NYPL exhibit denies the library's role in secreting lesbian and gay history, and diminished the contributions of community-based archives to the exhibit.
