Doris J. (Jeannie) McDaniel-Pappas, a Florida native and alumni of Eckerd College’s Program for Experienced Learners, donated this collection of postcards and brochures to the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library on 30 July 2007. Jeannie and her husband, Andrew M. Pappas Sr., collected these items during their family vacations. Materials cover locations in St. Petersburg, greater Pinellas County, other parts of Florida (with a strong emphasis on the Florida Keys/Key West, and some locations outside of Florida (most notably the Bahamas). Most of the materials date from the mid-1970s into the early to mid-1980s.

These issues of Bohemia, a magazine published in Havana, Cuba, cover the years 1998 through 2001. A native of West Tampa born December 1903, Rodriguez lived her entire life in West Tampa and Hillsborough County. She passed away at the age of 101 on 11 September 2005. In the late 1990s, she began a dialogue with residents of her ancestral homeland, Cuba. In time, some Cubans began mailing her copies of Bohemia that often included hand-written notes or letters about their lives. Some people also wrote on the covers and inside of the magazines. Generally, this correspondence focused on activities …

Gary R. Mormino, a professor of History and Florida Studies at USF St. Petersburg, donated this collection of political ephemera to the Poynter Library in 2004, with subsequent accessions in 2005 and 2006. The buttons, bumper stickers, and other ephemera focus primarily on presidential campaigns between the early 1960s and 2000. Mormino, a member of the USF faculty since 1977, teaches in the fields of American History, Social History, Immigration History, and Florida Studies. Since transferring from the Tampa campus, he has served as co-director of the Florida Studies Program of Distinction.

With its location along Bayboro Harbor, USF St. Petersburg offers many recreational and research opportunities to those with an interest in sailing. The University’s sailing team, headquartered on campus, uses the facilities of the Watercraft Office, Division of Student Affairs. These materials, collected by William “Steve” Lang during his tenure as advisor, illustrate the sailing competitions and activities of the sail team from the early 1990s through 2001. Additional accessions will build upon the materials in these records. The burgee was donated by J. M. “Sudsy” Tschiderer to complement the archival records.

Special Collections and Archives acquired nearly 200 individual and unique issues of the Gulf Beach News in October 2007. These issues represent the largest and most complete run of this newspaper known to exist. They came indirectly from the collection of Walter Pliny Fuller (1894-1973), a native of Bradenton and early pioneer of St. Petersburg who wrote for local newspapers and earned a notable reputation as an amateur local historian. Fuller frequently contributed articles for this newspaper. He also authored two first-person accounts of St. Petersburg history. The Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS-COC) serves as the regional accrediting body for postsecondary academic institutions in the southeastern United States. Regionally accredited institutions generally recognize course work, academic programs, and transfer credits from other similarly accredited colleges and universities. Dr. Lowell E. Davis served as dean during an important phase of USF St. Petersburg's history. He arrived in August 1986 and promptly set into motion an agenda that supported the expansion of course offerings and academic majors at USF St. Petersburg. Davis took a strong position in advocating greater autonomy and independence for the growing campus at a time when many Tampa-based administrators hoped to limit curricular initiatives at the University's "branch" campuses. His untimely death in the fall of 1989 slowed the process but did not extinguish the dreams of greater autonomy. Subsequent administrators at USF St. Petersburg …

From the mid-1970s through the mid-1990s, the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library maintained a vertical file of reports and market surveys conducted by the St. Petersburg Times. Located in the Business Reference area, these materials offered a portrait of life along the Suncoast that combined data available from other sources (such as the United States Census) with surveys, in-house research, and other statistical information gathered by the newspaper. The various reports and profiles residing in this collection offer an excellent account of commercial, demographic, media-related, and transportation trends in the Tampa Bay region. The library received a donation of nearly a dozen scrapbooks from the Pasco-Hernando Community College library in New Port Richey. These materials document the life of Glen Dill, a popular radio personality, local historian, and newspaper columnist. Dill (1910-1993) was the first voice many radio listeners heard in the morning when they tuned into WTSP-AM, a St. Petersburg radio station, from 1942 until 1957. Dill later worked as a disc-jockey and general manager at other local radio stations, including WILZ and WGUL. He also wrote more than one thousand newspaper columns for the Suncoast News and other papers, most with …

This collection consists of letters and documents related to the Snell/Barnard land transaction in 1913. Snell became a prominent developer of North Shore, the Old Northeast, and Snell Isle. Snell acquired tracts of land between 26th Avenue North and 30th Avenue North, east of First Street North to Coffee Pot Bayou from the Erastus A. Barnard family of Chicago. Although documents in this collection have inclusive dates from 1898 through 1951, most of the materials relate to the 1913 land sale. These materials were acquired by purchase through the Society for Advancement of Poynter Library.

When he joined the faculty in 1973, Regis A. Factor (1937-1999) became the first professor of political science permanently appointed to University of South Florida St. Petersburg. Factor received a bachelor of arts in Economics from Washington and Jefferson College in Pennsylvania in 1959. After serving with the Unites States Army, he earned a masters of arts in International Studies from The Johns Hopkins University, spending one year studying in Bologna, Italy. He continued his education, first, on an exchange at the University of Bonn, Germany, and then completing his PhD in Political Science at the University of Notre Dame. …

Wanita M. Scroggs, an attorney admitted to the Florida Bar and librarian at Stetson University College of Law, donated this book of writs of capias (book of arrest warrants) to the Poynter Library. Many of the warrants were issued for courts in Jacksonville and Ocala in the early 1890s. Among the witnesses and issuers of warrants was E[verett] E. Johns, who later perished in the line of duty on December 6, 1905 from a gunshot wound near Fernandina while serving as a chief deputy in Nassau County. In October 2003, Paula Thomas Baker donated an original 17 January 1884 edition of the St. John Globe. This broadside newspaper--with a Mark Twain passage on the front page--offers an excellent example of nineteenth century newspaper design in Canada. The donor’s spouse, M. E. “Buddy” Baker, formerly worked in the Media Relations office at USF St. Petersburg.

A former resident of the Fountain Inn—a retirement facility once adjacent to the Poynter Library that was demolished in February 2004—Betty Morris acquired a small scrapbook of clippings from a World’s Fair in the 1890s and various materials describing transportation issues in central Florida in the mid-twentieth century. The scrapbook contains clippings and hand-copied poetry, prayers, and letters collected by Ms. Morris's mother, Gussie Palmer Morris (nee Colcock), who was the granddaughter of Benjamin Morgan Palmer, a well-known Louisiana preacher from the Civil War and Reconstruction years.

A native of Lawrence, Kansas, Jones (1909-1990) moved to Kansas City, Missouri, as a young child, where he attended Lincoln High School and Lincoln Junior College. After living in nearly forty different U.S. cities, he moved to Tampa in 1950. He later settled in St. Petersburg in 1955, where he lived until his death. A photographer, publicist, and journalist, Mr. Jones worked as Florida editor for the Pittsburgh Courier and edited the African American pages of the St. Petersburg Times and St. Petersburg Evening Independent. Joane Miller, a resident of Redington Beach and widow of Parker E. Miller, donated the materials in this collection in two separate accessions. In early 1999, the library received a single bound notebook with individual documents signed by the first thirty-two Presidents of the United States (George Washington through Harry S. Truman). A subsequent accession in August 2000 included a collection of commemorative coins from the Franklin Mint that celebrates notable events in American history. Parker Everard Miller’s family maintained homes in Ohio and Florida. During the 1920s, members of the family often spent their winter months in St. Petersburg. …

During the summer of 2006, the Poynter Library received a small donation of materials related to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Viking space missions of the mid-1970s. Lula R. Agee, a NASA employee of more than twenty years based at the Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, collected these materials during her tenure as a conference coordinator at that location.

The photographs and slides in this collection document campus activities and student life at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg. J. M. “Sudsy” Tschiderer donated three scrapbooks in summer 2005 to the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library for use in the Fortieth Anniversary Exhibit of the campus. She gave the library additional slides, photographs, and photographic negatives in August 2006. These images illustrate the period from the mid-1960s through 1989 and capture notable events, members of the campus community, and general scenes that document the university experience at USF St. Petersburg.

A local activist in the Democratic Party, Evans did a lot of the “behind-the-scenes” work for political campaigns in Pinellas County and statewide during the 1960s and 1970s. Evans was a dynamic leader both in local and national politics from the late 1950s through the 1990s. This collection includes correspondence, campaign literature, and political ephemera. A small monographic collection (including autographed titles) accompanies the manuscript materials. A native of Georgia, Hazel Atkinson was born on 16 August 1931 into a family that owned a textile machinery company in Atlanta. On 6 March 2006, the Poynter Library acquired by purchase a single bound volume containing directories of many congregations served by the circuit riding Methodist ministers who traveled along the Pinellas Peninsula from the late 1870s through the 1890s. This volume is one of the earliest existing sources of written records from the lower Pinellas Peninsula. The book includes records of members, baptisms, and other information about pioneer families since 1873, a time when the sparsely populated Pinellas Peninsula fell under the administration of Hillsborough County. Robert McIntyre Thrush received an appointment as a halftime clerk at the Extension Library on the Bay Campus (now USF St. Petersburg) in April 1968. Working under the supervision of Extension Librarian Osborne Gomez, Thrush coordinated audio/visual services for the young campus. By the late 1980s, “Bob” Thrush oversaw a very active area of campus. Under the supervision of Gerald Notaro, Media Services Librarian, he became a senior audio/visual equipment operator. Margaret Horst, a resident of Tarpon Springs, gave this collection to James A. Schnur in 1997. Horst had served as secretary of the Rural Protective Association at the time of its creation in 1970. Schnur, then assistant director at the Tarpon Springs Public Library, donated the materials to the Poynter Library This collection documents how residents of a sparsely developed area fought a last ditch—and ultimately unsuccessful—battle to preserve their rural lifestyle in the frontier range of northeastern Pinellas County. The materials in this collection document campus activities and student life at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg. Compiled by J. M. “Sudsy” Tschiderer—a longtime director of Student Activities—this collection includes organizational and operational records of a popular campus gathering place, the Mushroom Coffeehouse. Also known as Pot-Pourri, this student-initiated facility provided a venue for music, movies, and entertainment during the early and mid- 1970s. In June 2003, Winifred S. “Winnie” Foster donated a collection of clippings, photographs, and archival materials that document her involvement in local civil liberties activities and the development of commercial activities at the Central Plaza Shopping Center. Born in 1927, Winnie grew up in a Quaker home environment. She and other farm girls in rural Ohio often made clothes from feed sacks. As she came of age, she embraced the Quaker tradition of pacifism and commitment for equality. She and her husband, also a Quaker, moved to Rhode Island and supported liberal causes. Mr. Norman E. Jones, Jr., donated a variety of museum brochures, directories, and ephemera related to African American historic sites throughout the United States and Canada. These materials, collected during his many travels, provide illustrative examples of how historic museums and other public history venues commemorate the legacies of African Americans. The library received a subsequent accession of materials in the summer of 2005. Staff merged these accessions into a single collection.

The materials in this collection document the programs and activities of the USF St. Petersburg Women’s Organization, a group established in 1979 as an offshoot of the USF Women’s Club in Tampa. Membership included staff, faculty, and spouses at USF St. Petersburg. The minutes, correspondence, and other records offer an excellent portrait of an important campus-wide organization that took shape during the first major expansion of the campus beyond its original site on the peninsula.
