This collection of 57 papers, the second volume from an impressive 2012 conference at the Acropolis Museum in Athens, augments a substantial companion work that focuses on theory and practice (S. Müth, P.I. Schneider, M. Schnelle, and P.D. De Staebler, eds., Ancient Fortifications: A Compendium of Theory and Practice. Fokus Fortifikation Studies 1 [Oxford 2015]). These two volumes boldly place in high profile the archaeological research now concerned with this once ancillary area. Leriche’s introductory overview points out that study of massive and ubiquitous city walls, the principal goal here, had long been subordinated to research centered on “inscriptions …

Ceramic Roof Ornaments (Almenas) From Cihuatan, El Salvador: Contexts, Descriptions And Inferences From Other Sites, Marshall Joseph Becker

Anthropology & Sociology Faculty Publications

Discovery of dozens of broken ceramic roof ornaments (almenas) on the floor abutting the front (western) margin of an elite residence (Structure Q-1) at Cihuatan, El Salvador provides a new context for this category of artifacts. While relatively well-known from sites in the Valley of Mexico, elsewhere in Mesoamerica almenas have been documented only from a single Teotihuacan-style structure at the lowland Maya site of Tikal, one structure at Mayapan, and possibly at a few other sites in Yucatan. A preliminary program to reconstruct a portion of the many box-like almenasat Cihuatan, of a date much later than the one …

This paper presents the results of the 2015 excavation in the necropolis of Monte Li Santi at the Faliscan site of Narce. Our knowledge of the necropolis was based until now mainly on the 1894 publication in the Monumenti Antichi dei Lincei. During the 2015 excavation, three large rock-cut chamber tombs were discovered, unfortunately already looted, together with a series of niches near them, used probably for ritual practices. In the different sections of this paper, the authors discuss the history of the research, the stratigraphy, the finds, the few human remains discovered and the process of conservation of the …

A Wampum Belt Sent To Edward Jenner, M.D., Marshall Joseph Becker Oct 2015

A Wampum Belt Sent To Edward Jenner, M.D., Marshall Joseph Becker

Anthropology & Sociology Faculty Publications

Following a program of vaccination for several First Nations peoples, representatives of these Five Nations tribes met with officials at Fort George, Upper Canada in 1807 to present formal thanks to Edward Jenner. These elders also wished to send to Jenner a belt of wampum and a string of wampum as a gift, in return for his gift of vaccination. Information regarding the possible configuration of that belt, and the ultimate disposition of these two examples of wampum, provide insights into examples of these Native American items that may still survive in European collections.

An Update On Colonial Witch Bottles, Marshall Joseph Becker Oct 2005

An Update On Colonial Witch Bottles, Marshall Joseph Becker

Anthropology & Sociology Faculty Publications

The discovery of an 18th century "witch bottle" during controlled excavations at a colonial site in Essington, Pennsylvania in 1976 provided the first archaeological evidence for the use of these magical charms in the New World. Since that time, the author has identified five additional specimens in the northeastern United States. The geographic distribution of these artifacts reflects a widespread belief in magic in the northeastern English colonies. One recovered Pennsylvania witch bottle suggests that the use of magical charms lingered into the early 19th century.
