Sex And Race Determination From The Base Of The Skull, Juliet Allen Cleaves
Sex And Race Determination From The Base Of The Skull, Juliet Allen Cleaves
Masters Theses
The ability to determine sex and race from skeletal remains is a fundamental feature of any skeletal analysis, including population studies and personal identification. Typically, sex and race is estimated from the cranium (Giles and Elliot 1962, 1963) and recently from the base of the cranium (Holland 1986). This study investigates the application of seven craniometric measurements from the base of the skull for the identification of sexual and ethnic groups.
This study employs samples from two skeletal collections, the Hamman-Todd (n=211) and the University of Tennessee donated and forensic collections (n=81). Seven measurements are taken on 292 (101 white …
"Vayamos Allá Donde Está Nuestra Madre": Peasant Recruitment To A Mexican Millenarian Colony, Miguel C. Leatham
"Vayamos Allá Donde Está Nuestra Madre": Peasant Recruitment To A Mexican Millenarian Colony, Miguel C. Leatham
Anthropology ETDs
The worldwide Catholic Traditionalist sectarian movement has nurtured various independent colonies of prophetic origin emphasizing Marian apocalypticism and ongoing charismatic revelation. This study presents findings from ethnological research focusing on the recruitment paths of peasants into a charismatic-led, Marian millenarian colony of Catholic Traditionalist origin, Nueva Jerusalén, in rural west Mexico. A microsociological framework emphasizing cognitive variables, and rooted in the work of cultural anthropologists and sociologists of new religious movement, is employed in order to study religious decision making. Life history data from Mexican peasant recruits and peasant control cases are analyzed chiefly in terms of the experiential dimensions …
This Looks Like An Old Point: Time And Projectile Points In The Tualatin Valley, Oregon, Linda Lani Freidenburg
This Looks Like An Old Point: Time And Projectile Points In The Tualatin Valley, Oregon, Linda Lani Freidenburg
Dissertations and Theses
Little is known about the time depth of human occupation in the Tualatin Valley. Archaeological investigations have produced no absolute dates for the few sites tested. Projectile points collected from the Ibach and Heynderickx farms in the Tualatin Valley show similarities to early point styles from sites in the Pacific Northwest dating from 6,000 to 10,000 years ago. To determine how old the Ibach and Heynderickx sites are, the undated collections of 107 Ibach points and 119 Heynderickx points are compared to two established chronological projectile point sequences, which had been constructed using the relative dating technique of frequency seriation. …

Preliminary Cultural Resources Investigations For The Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge, Hidalgo County, Texas, Karl W. Kibler, Martha Doty Freeman, Amy C. Earls
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
Archeological, archival, and geomorphologic investigations were conducted for the proposed Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge Project in Hidalgo County, Texas, by Prewitt and Associates, Inc. from October 12-27, 1992. The purposes of these investigations were to locate and record any cultural resources within the project area, determine their eligibility for listing on the National Register of Historic Places and designation as State Archeological Landmarks, and to provide an overview of the Holocene geomorphic history of the project area.
The geomorphic history of the project area suggests that the Rio Grande has experienced continuous channel aggradation from the end of the Pleistocene to …

The Cultural Construction Of The Maine Sporting Camps, March O. Mccubrey
The Cultural Construction Of The Maine Sporting Camps, March O. Mccubrey
Senior Scholar Papers
Maine sporting camps were a cultural and social phenomenon of the urban upper and middle class. They originated in Maine in the late 1870s and early 1880s and reached their zenith around the turn of the century with over 160 in operation in eight of the sixteen counties in Maine in 1906. The period from 1880 until World War I can be considered the 'golden era' of the Maine sporting camps. After the war, with technological advancements such as the outboard motor, the proliferation of the automobile, and the introduction of a road system into rural Maine, the camps underwent …

A Study In Training For Applied Anthropologists Working In Business And Industry, Cherie Ann Black
Masters Theses
This research attempted to shed some light on one of the currently central issues in applied anthropology, that of training for applied anthropology students specializing in business anthropology. The data for this project came from a sample of anthropologists currently practicing in the domain of business and industry. This "panel of experts" was chosen because of their uniquely emic point of view. Much of the information concerning this subject has come from the academic community, there is very little from the practitioners themselves. The data was gathered from the respondents with two questionnaires; An initial survey was sent out to …

A Bias In Skeletal Sexing, Karen Elizabeth Bone
A Bias In Skeletal Sexing, Karen Elizabeth Bone
Masters Theses
Weiss (1973) documented the existence of a bias in skeletal sexing. Through the use of 43 archaeological populations he discerned that there was a bias towards males. The purpose of this research is to determine if the bias in skeletal sexing is still in existence today if not, to determine what factors may be explain the disappearance of biased sex ratios.
This study examines 49 archaeological site reports from North and South America. Four different factors were gathered from each site report because they are believed to affect sex ratios. Those four factors are: (1) when sites were excavated; (2) …
An Examination Of The Locus Of Illness Control Scale Using Data Collected In Brazil And Appalachia, Robert Lawrence Patrick Jr.
An Examination Of The Locus Of Illness Control Scale Using Data Collected In Brazil And Appalachia, Robert Lawrence Patrick Jr.
Masters Theses
(From the Introduction) In recent years it has become increasingly apparent that the prevention and cure of disease can no longer be viewed as the province of the physician alone. The patient plays as much or more of a role in his or her health status as the medical professional, and the behavior of the patient is a vital force in health care. All the efforts of the medical profession can to waste if the patient does not play a recovering role. Yet some individuals are far more willing than others to cooperate in the maintenance of their …

The Kavousi Coarse Wares: A Bronze Age Chronology For Survey In The Mirabello Area, East Crete, Donald C. Haggis, Margaret S. Mook
Margaret S. Mook
This paper presents the results of the Kavousi-Thriphti Survey coarse-ware study. It is argued that coarse utilitarian pottery can be used for dating sites in archaeological survey, and further, that coarse pottery on the surface of any site with a domestic or storage function may represent a wider, and thus more accurate, chronological range than the associated fine wares. Detailed descriptions of 18 coarse fabric types identified in the survey region are presented. Thirteen of these fabrics were determined to be chronologically diagnostic. These fabric types, with their proposed chronological ranges and proveniences, provide sufficient data to begin analyzing the …

New Excavations Of A Middle Minoan Cemetery In East Crete, Donald C. Haggis, Margaret S. Mook, Jennifer L. Tobin, B.J. Hayden
Margaret S. Mook
The Kalo Khorio Archaeological Rescue Project (KARP) is the excavation of a Middle Minoan (I-II) cemetery in the region of Kalo Khorio-Istron, at the southern edge of the Bay of Mirabella in eastern Crete. Excavation was conducted in September 1991 by members of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, and under the auspices and general directorship of Metaxia Tsipopoulou and Costis Davaras of the Greek Archaeological Service of eastern Crete.

The Late Minoan Iiic Pottery From The Kastro At Kavousi, East Crete, Margaret S. Mook, William D.E. Coulson
Margaret S. Mook
The last phase of the Bronze Age on Crete, Late Minoan IIIC, is poorly understood both culturally and chronologically. Although much has been said about the shapes and decoration of LM IIIC pottery, the analyses are primarily stylistic and lack a precise stratigraphical basis. The stylistic development within the pottery sequence is ill defined because the remains from type sites (such as Kastri, Karphi, and Phaistos) are incompletely published, extremely meager, or stratigraphically discontinuous. On the Kastro at Kavousi, however, three distinct chronological phases of LM IIIC occupation, representing the entirety of the period, in addition to a transitional LM …
