Within a quantitative career, you are/will soon be challenged to create an overall value to explain a situational status. For example, socio-economic status, well-being, and in this specific example, happiness among sports fans. This talk seeks to discuss my previous work developed out from student research performed at NSU in its application to my first project for ESPN Sports Analytics, the College Football Fan Happiness Index (http://es.pn/2vmParA) . I will dive into the multivariate statistical techniques of principal component analysis and hierarchal clustering to create this happiness index from a slew of variables.

Urbanization increases runoff by changing land use types from less impervious to impervious covers. Improving the accuracy of a runoff assessment model, the Long-Term Hydrologic Impact Assessment (L-THIA) Model, can help us to better evaluate the potential uses of Low Impact Development (LID) practices aimed at reducing runoff, as well as to identify appropriate runoff and water quality mitigation methods. Phase transitions within large-scale systems may be modeled by nonlinear stochastic partial differential equations in which system dynamics are captured by appropriate potentials. Coherent structures in these systems evolve randomly through time; thus, statistical behavior of these fields is of greater interest than particular system realizations. The ability to simulate and predict phase transition behavior has many applications, from material behaviors (e.g., crystallographic phase transformations and coherent movement of granular materials) to traffic congestion. The design of self-sustaining lunar habitats is a challenge primarily due to the Moon’s lack of atmospheric protection and hazardous environment. To assure safe habitats that will lead to further lunar and space exploration, it is necessary to assess the different hazards faced on the Moon such as meteoroid impacts, extreme temperatures, and radiation. In particular, meteoroids pose a risk to lunar structures due to their high frequency of occurrence and hypervelocity impact. We present a model that utilizes Cox processes and CNN classifiers in order to count the number of instances of an object in an image. Poisson processes are well suited to events that occur randomly in space, like the location of objects in an image, as well as to the task of counting. Mixed Poisson processes also offer increased flexibility, however they do not easily scale with image size: they typically require O(n3) computation time and O(n2) storage, where n is the number of pixels. Crop performance test (CPT) is a common practice to evaluate yield performance and adaptability of each cultivar. In this study, we combined 16 years of soybean CPT data, which included six representative locations, three major maturity groups, and over 1000 cultivars, to determine some patterns associated with yield production. As expected, the repeatability for these cultivars in trial over years was very low. Thus, the data processing in this study was focused on descriptive statistics regarding time, location, and seed supplier and several linear model analyses. The crucial and sometimes difficult areas of data analysis and statistics can be made clearer by looking at examples of how they can be done badly - examples which, unfortunately, are easy to find. We share our experience teaching a short course which examines disingenuous graphs, biased surveys, deliberately misworded statements, and other methods of misrepresenting data. The negative examples provide an opportunity to discuss how statistics should properly be done, and explain what can happen when statistics are used incorrectly. We include a discussion of the failure of polls to predict the outcome of the presidential election.

Zebra chip disease (ZC) is a disease of potato which produces striped necrotic patterns that become pronounced when fried, making potato products such as chips and fries unmarketable. The disease is associated with a bacterium Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum (Lso) and is transmitted by the potato psyllid, Bactericera cockerelli. An important aspect in managing this disease is the modeling and prediction of potato psyllid occurrence. Identification of winter wheat cultivars that are highly adapted to a wide range of environmental conditions is one of the most important wheat research objectives. Multi-environment crop trials under diverse environments is a commonly used practice to evaluate yield stability. For example, uniform eastern and southern red soft winter wheat nursery trials are conducted annually. However, locations and cultivars may vary from year to year and may cause yield stability analysis to be statistically challenging.
