This study was to characterize dynamic source strength changes estimated from high-density scalp electroencephalogram (EEG) at different phases of a submaximal voluntary muscle contraction. Eight healthy volunteers performed isometric handgrip contractions of the right arm at 20% maximal intensity. Signals of the handgrip force, electromyography (EMG) from the finger flexor and extensor muscles and 64-channel EEG were acquired simultaneously. Sources of the EEG were analyzed at 19 time points across preparation, execution and sustaining phases of the handgrip. A 3-layer boundary element model (BEM) based on the MNI (Montréal Neurological Institute) brain MRI was used to overlay the sources. A …

Social Networks Enabled Coordination Model For Cost Management Of Patient Hospital Admissions, Shahadat Uddin, Liaquat Hossain
Social Networks Enabled Coordination Model For Cost Management Of Patient Hospital Admissions, Shahadat Uddin, Liaquat Hossain
Shahadat Uddin
In this study, we introduce a social networks enabled coordination model for exploring the effect of network position of “patient,” “physician,” and “hospital” actors in a patient-centered care network that evolves during patient hospitalization period on the total cost of coordination. An actor is a node, which represents an entity such as individual and organization in a social network. In our analysis of actor networks and coordination in the healthcare literature, we identified that there is significant gap where a number of promising hospital coordination model have been developed (e.g., Guided Care Model, Chronic Care Model) for the current healthcare …

Identifying Unique Neighborhood Characteristics To Guide Health Planning For Stroke And Heart Attack: Fuzzy Cluster And Discriminant Analyses Approaches, Ashley Pedigo, William Seaver, Agricola Odoi
Identifying Unique Neighborhood Characteristics To Guide Health Planning For Stroke And Heart Attack: Fuzzy Cluster And Discriminant Analyses Approaches, Ashley Pedigo, William Seaver, Agricola Odoi
Agricola Odoi
Background: Socioeconomic, demographic, and geographic factors are known determinants of stroke and myocardial infarction (MI) risk. Clustering of these factors in neighborhoods needs to be taken into consideration during planning, prioritization and implementation of health programs intended to reduce disparities. Given the complex and multidimensional nature of these factors, multivariate methods are needed to identify neighborhood clusters of these determinants so as to better understand the unique neighborhood profiles. This information is critical for evidence-based health planning and service provision. Therefore, this study used a robust multivariate approach to classify neighborhoods and identify their socio-demographic characteristics so as to provide …

The Use Of Imputed Values In The Meta-Analysis Of Genome-Wide Association Studies., Shuo Jiao, Li Hsu, Carolyn Hutter, Ulrike Peters
Shuo Jiao
In genome-wide association studies (GWAS), it is a common practice to impute the genotypes of untyped single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) by exploiting the linkage disequilibrium structure among SNPs. The use of imputed genotypes improves genome coverage and makes it possible to perform meta-analysis combining results from studies genotyped on different platforms. A popular way of using imputed data is the "expectation-substitution" method, which treats the imputed dosage as if it were the true genotype. In current practice, the estimates given by the expectation-substitution method are usually combined using inverse variance weighting (IVM) scheme in meta-analysis. However, the IVM is not …
Meta-Analysis Of New Genome-Wide Association Studies Of Colorectal Cancer Risk.
Meta-Analysis Of New Genome-Wide Association Studies Of Colorectal Cancer Risk.
Shuo Jiao
Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in developed countries. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have successfully identified novel susceptibility loci for colorectal cancer. To follow up on these findings, and try to identify novel colorectal cancer susceptibility loci, we present results for GWAS of colorectal cancer (2,906 cases, 3,416 controls) that have not previously published main associations. Specifically, we calculated odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals using log-additive models for each study. In order to improve our power to detect novel colorectal cancer susceptibility loci, we performed a meta-analysis combining the results across studies. We selected the …
Using R To Create Synthetic Discrete Response Regression Models, Joseph Hilbe
Using R To Create Synthetic Discrete Response Regression Models, Joseph Hilbe
Joseph M Hilbe
The creation of synthetic models allows a researcher to better understand models as well as the bias that can occur when the assumptions upon which a model is based is violated. This article provides R code that can be used or amended to create a variety of discrete response regression models.
U.S. Cultural Involvement And Its Association With Co-Occurring Substance Abuse And Sexual Risk Behaviors Among Youth In The Dominican Republic, Elián P. Cabrera-Nguyen, Juan B. Peña
U.S. Cultural Involvement And Its Association With Co-Occurring Substance Abuse And Sexual Risk Behaviors Among Youth In The Dominican Republic, Elián P. Cabrera-Nguyen, Juan B. Peña
Elián P. Cabrera-Nguyen
We examined the relationship of US cultural involvement with substance abuse and sexual risk behavior profiles from our nationally representative sample of public high school students in the Dominican Republic. Using a novel methodological approach to control for selection bias, we examined explanations for the so-called Latino or Hispanic immigrant paradox. A latent class regression analysis with manifest and latent covariates found that US cultural involvement indicators were independent and robust predictors of increased risk of co-ocurring substance abuse and sexual risk behaviors. Implications for prevention efforts targeting risk behaviors among Latino/a adolescents in the US and abroad are considered.

Social Marketing, Stages Of Change, And Public Health Smoking Interventions, Paula Diehr
Social Marketing, Stages Of Change, And Public Health Smoking Interventions, Paula Diehr
Paula Diehr
As a "thought experiment," the authors used a modified stages of change model for smoking to define homogeneous segments within various hypothetical populations. The authors then estimated the population effect of public health interventions that targeted the different segments. Under most assumptions, interventions that emphasized primary and secondary prevention, by targeting the Never Smoker, Maintenance, or Action segments, resulted in the highest nonsmoking life expectancy. This result is consistent with both social marketing and public health principles. Although the best thing for an individual smoker is to stop smoking, the greatest public health benefit is achieved by interventions that target …
Carboxymethylation Of Kappa-Carrageenan For Intestinal-Targeted Delivery Of Bioactive Macromolecules, Kok Hoong Leong
Carboxymethylation Of Kappa-Carrageenan For Intestinal-Targeted Delivery Of Bioactive Macromolecules, Kok Hoong Leong
Kok Hoong Leong
The work presented herein discusses the carboxymethylation of kappa-carrageenan, a natural linear polysaccharide, to afford a pH-dependent swelling property allowing for intestinal-targeted delivery of bioactive macromolecules. The carboxymethylation conditions with respect to the volume and concentration of sodium hydroxide (VNaOH, CNaOH), weight of monochloroacetic acid (WMCA), and reaction temperature (T) were optimized using a response surface method incorporating a multivariate spline interpolation technique (RSMS). Fluorescein isothiocyanate-labeled dextran (FD-4; 4.4 kDa) was used as a hydrophilic macromolecule model. Beads made from encapsulating FD-4 in the carboxymethylated kappa-carrageenan displayed pH-dependent swelling and encapsulation efficiency of 74%. The release of FD-4 was low …

Statistical Trends In Women's Participation In Science: Commentary On Valla And Ceci, Cathy Kessel, Donna J. Nelson

“Can Sex Differences in Science Be Tied to the Long Reach of Prenatal Hormones?” describes women's participation in science and claims that the increases in quantitative fields (e.g., mathematics, engineering, and physical sciences) are an exception to the statement that “Women’s growth in the scientific workforce has been meteoric over the past 40 years.” We disagree and present statistics demonstrating a more positive view of the increase of the number of women in quantitative fields.
Is There Any Interdependence Between Economic Growth And Human Development? Evidence From Indian States, Sacchidananda Mukherjee Dr., Debashis Chakraborty
Is There Any Interdependence Between Economic Growth And Human Development? Evidence From Indian States, Sacchidananda Mukherjee Dr., Debashis Chakraborty
Sacchidananda Mukherjee
This paper attempts to analyse the evolving relationship between economic growth and human development for 28 major Indian states during four time periods ranging over the last two decades, viz. 1983, 1993, 1999-2000 and 2004-05. The objective of this exercise is to understand whether per capita income (as an indicator of economic growth) is influenced by human development and vice versa across Indian states. The National Human Development Report 2001 methodology has been applied for constructing the Human Development Index (HDI) for the Indian states. The HDI has been constructed separately for rural and urban areas for each of the …

Generalized Benjamini-Hochberg Procedures Using Spacings, Debashis Ghosh
Generalized Benjamini-Hochberg Procedures Using Spacings, Debashis Ghosh
Debashis Ghosh
For the problem of multiple testing, the Benjamini-Hochberg (B-H) procedure has become a very popular method in applications. We show how the B-H procedure can be interpreted as a test based on the spacings corresponding to the p-value distributions. Using this equivalence, we develop a class of generalized B-H procedures that maintain control of the false discovery rate in finite-samples. We also consider the effect of correlation on the procedure; simulation studies are used to illustrate the methodology.
