In the medical literature, there has been an increased interest in evaluating association between exposure and outcomes using nonrandomized observational studies. However, because assignments to exposure are not random in observational studies, comparisons of outcomes between exposed and nonexposed subjects must account for the effect of confounders. Propensity score methods have been widely used to control for confounding, when estimating exposure effect. Previous studies have shown that conditioning on the propensity score results in biased estimation of conditional odds ratio and hazard ratio. The goal of this study is to demonstrate the use of the Dempster-Shafer Theory of evidence as a decision aid to predict aircraft maintenance times during wartime operations using expert judgment elicitation. Increased precision in time estimation enables the jet engine aircraft maintenance facility commander to make more accurate decisions for the Air Force's wartime tactical operations allowing the commander to gain a decisive advantage. A questionnaire was designed to elicit judgments from experts in the Aircraft Maintenance Facility (AMF) to investigate maintenance times of the major failure modes (Ignition, Fuel, and Electrical). A calibration method substitutes for measurements, X(,i), that are accurate but impractical or costly, a set of measurements, Y(,i), that are less accurate but simpler or less costly. There are two general types of calibration methods. The classical approach in which once the calibration sample is drawn, the estimates of the X values for a given unit is found without any consideration of the distribution of X values for the other units to be measured. This corresponds best to the literal meaning of the word "calibration". Maximum likelihood estimation is the statistical formulation of the classical approach.
