Observation Of Transverse Λ/Λ¯ Hyperon Polarization In E+E− Annihilation At Belle, A. Abdesselam Et Al., D. Joffe, Ratnappuli L. Kulasiri

Faculty and Research Publications

We report the first observation of the polarization of Λ/Λ¯ hyperons transverse to its production plane in e+e− annihilation. We observe a significant polarization that rises with the fractional energy carried by the hyperon as well as its transverse momentum. To define the production plane, we use the direction of the hyperon momentum together with either the thrust axis in the event or the momentum vector of a hadron in the opposite hemisphere. Furthermore, we investigate the contributions to the hyperon polarization from the feed-down from Σ0/Σ¯0 and Λ±c decays. This measurement uses a dataset of 800.4\~fb−1 collected by the …

Search For D^{0} Decays To Invisible Final States At Belle, Y.-T. Lai Et Al., D. Joffe, Ratnappuli L. Kulasiri Nov 2016

Search For D^{0} Decays To Invisible Final States At Belle, Y.-T. Lai Et Al., D. Joffe, Ratnappuli L. Kulasiri

Faculty and Research Publications

We report the result from the first search for D0 decays to invisible final states. The analysis is performed on a data sample of 924  fb−1 collected at and near the Υ(4S) and Υ(5S) resonances with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e− collider. The absolute branching fraction is determined using an inclusive D0 sample, obtained by fully reconstructing the rest of the particle system including the other charmed particle. No significant signal yield is observed and an upper limit of 9.4×10−5 is set on the branching fraction of D0 to invisible final states at 90% confidence level.

Art As A Tool In Quantum Mechanics, Zachary Vealey Oct 2016

Art As A Tool In Quantum Mechanics, Zachary Vealey

Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research

Revolutions in scientific thought often have substantial societal consequences, however, cultural assimilation of the new idea is contingent on a widespread understanding. Historically recent developments in modern physics, such as quantum mechanics and general relativity, suffer from their notoriously perceived difficulty, thus hindering cultural assimilation. To address this issue, art can serve as a useful complement to a student studying quantum mechanics - especially through its interpretation of delocalized electron density. A cross-disciplinary approach affords a greater diversity in participation and consequently results in a broader scientific outreach.

Faculty and Research Publications

We report results on the studies of the e+e−→B(∗)sB¯(∗)s processes. The results are based on a 121.4 fb−1 data sample collected with the Belle detector at the center-of-mass energy near the Υ(10860) peak and 16.4 fb−1 of data collected at 19 energy points in the range from 10.77 to 11.02 GeV. We observe a clear e+e−→Υ(10860)→B(∗)sB¯(∗)s signal, with no statistically significant signal of e+e−→Υ(11020)→B(∗)sB¯(∗)s. The relative production ratio of B∗sB¯∗s, BsB¯∗s, and BsB¯s final states at s√=10.866 GeV is measured to be 7: 0.856±0.106(stat.)±0.053(syst.): 0.645±0.094(stat.)+0.030−0.033(syst.). An angular analysis of the B∗sB¯∗s final state produced at the Υ(10860) peak is also …

Theoretical Results For Top-Quark Cross Sections And Distributions, Nikolaos Kidonakis Aug 2016

Theoretical Results For Top-Quark Cross Sections And Distributions, Nikolaos Kidonakis

Faculty and Research Publications

I present new results and updates for total cross sections and differential distributions in topantitop pair and single-top production. Soft-gluon corrections are added to exact fixed-order results to provide the best predictions at approximate N3LO for tt¯ production and approximate NNLO for single-top production. Total cross sections and top-quark transverse-momentum and rapidity distributions are presented and compared with data at LHC and Tevatron energies. The cusp anomalous dimension at three and higher loops is also discussed.

Charged Higgs Production In Association With A Top Quark At Approximate Nnlo, Nikolaos Kidonakis Jul 2016

Charged Higgs Production In Association With A Top Quark At Approximate Nnlo, Nikolaos Kidonakis

Faculty and Research Publications

I present approximate next-to-next-to-leading-order (aNNLO) total and differential cross sections for charged Higgs production in association with a top quark at LHC energies. The aNNLO results for the process bg→tH− are derived from next-to-next-to-leading-logarithm (NNLL) resummation of soft-gluon corrections. Scale and parton-distribution uncertainties for the cross sections are shown. The top-quark transverse-momentum and rapidity distributions are also calculated.

Measurement Of The Branching Ratio Of B¯0 → D∗ Τ −Ν¯Τ Relative To B¯0 → D∗ ℓ −Ν¯ℓ Decays With A Semileptonic Tagging Method, A. Abdesselam Et Al., D. Joffee

Faculty and Research Publications

We report a measurement of ratio R(D ∗ ) = B(B¯0 → D ∗+τ −ν¯τ )/B(B¯0 → D ∗+ℓ −ν¯ℓ), where ℓ denotes an electron or a muon. The results are based on a data sample containing 772 × 106 BB¯ pairs recorded at the Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e +e − collider. We select a sample of B 0B¯0 pairs by reconstructing both B mesons in semileptonic decays to D ∗∓ℓ ±. We measure R(D ∗ ) = 0.302± 0.030(stat) ± 0.011(syst), which is within 1.6σ of the Standard Model theoretical expectation, where σ …

Study Of Χ_{Bj}(1p) Properties In The Radiative Υ(2s) Decays, A. Abdesselam Et Al., D. Joffe Jun 2016

Study Of Χ_{Bj}(1p) Properties In The Radiative Υ(2s) Decays, A. Abdesselam Et Al., D. Joffe

Faculty and Research Publications

We report a study of radiative decays of \chi_{bJ}(1P)(J=0,1,2) mesons into 74 hadronic final states comprising charged and neutral pions, kaons, protons; out of these, 41 modes are observed with at least 5 standard deviation significance. Our measurements not only improve the previous measurements by the CLEO Collaboration but also lead to first observations in many new modes. The large sample allows us to probe the total decay width of the \chi_{b0}(1P). In the absence of a statistically significant result, a 90% confidence-level upper limit is set on the width at \Gamma_{total}< 2.4 MeV. Our results are based on 24.7 fb^{-1} of e+e- collision data recorded by the Belle detector at the \Upsilon(2S) resonance, corresponding to (157.8\pm3.6)\times10^6 \Upsilon(2S) decays.

Possible Evolution Of Supermassive Black Holes From Fri Quasars, Matthew I. Kim, Damian J. Christian, David Garofalo, Jaclyn D'Avanzo May 2016

Possible Evolution Of Supermassive Black Holes From Fri Quasars, Matthew I. Kim, Damian J. Christian, David Garofalo, Jaclyn D'Avanzo

Faculty and Research Publications

We explore the question of the rapid buildup of black hole mass in the early universe employing a growing black hole mass-based determination of both jet and disc powers predicted in recent theoretical work on black hole accretion and jet formation. Despite simplified, even artificial assumptions about accretion and mergers, we identify an interesting low probability channel for the growth of one billion solar mass black holes within hundreds of millions of years of the big bang without appealing to super Eddington accretion. This result is made more compelling by the recognition of a connection between this channel and an …

High-Precision Theory For Top-Quark Production, Nikolaos Kidonakis

Faculty and Research Publications

I present high-precision results for top quark production at hadron collider energies. Total and differential cross sections are calculated through aN3LO for top-antitop pair production and through aNNLO for single-top production. Top production in association with a charged Higgs boson and via anomalous couplings is also briefly discussed.

Thermal Analysis Of Borosilicate Glass For Its Biological Applications, Gregory Humble Apr 2016

Thermal Analysis Of Borosilicate Glass For Its Biological Applications, Gregory Humble

Symposium of Student Scholars

Borosilicate glass doped with varying wt% of cerium oxide is investigated for biological applications. Thermal studies of each formulation were conducted using an SDT Q600 differential scanning calorimeter. 30mg samples of 350 - 425 μm particle size of each type of glass were heated to 1200°C in order to obtain the glass transition, crystallization, and melting temperatures. Samples were then heated to 900°C at several heating rates, ranging from 2°C/min to 100°C/min, then compared against each other as well as against an undoped borosilicate glass.

We set an upper limit rS < 0.87 at the 68% confidence level, using the full data sample of 711 fb−1 corresponding to 772 × 106 BB¯ pairs collected at the ϒ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e− collider. This result is obtained from observables x− = +0.4+1.0+0.0 −0.6−0.1 ± 0.0, y− = −0.6+0.8+0.1 −1.0−0.0 ± 0.1, x+ = +0.1+0.7+0.0 −0.4−0.1 ± 0.1, and y+ = +0.3+0.5+0.0 −0.8−0.1 ± 0.1, where x± = rS cos(δS ± φ3), y± = rS sin(δS ± φ3), and φ3 (δS) is the weak (strong) phase difference between B0 → D0K∗0 and B0 → D¯0K∗0.

Scale Invariant Jet Suppression Across The Black Hole Mass Scale, David Garofalo, Chandra B. Singh Mar 2016

Scale Invariant Jet Suppression Across The Black Hole Mass Scale, David Garofalo, Chandra B. Singh

Faculty and Research Publications

We provide a schematic framework for understanding observations of jet suppression in soft state black hole X-ray binaries based on the Blandford-Payne process and the net magnetic flux threading the black hole. Due to the geometrical thinness of soft state disks, mass-loading of field lines is ineffective compared to both geometrically thick disks as well as thin disks with greater black hole threading flux, a simple physical picture that allows us to understand the weakness of jets in radiatively efficient thin disks accreting in the prograde direction around high-spinning black holes. Despite a simplicity that forbids insights into the complexity …

Single-Top Transverse-Momentum Distributions At Approximate Nnlo, Nikolaos Kidonakis Mar 2016

Single-Top Transverse-Momentum Distributions At Approximate Nnlo, Nikolaos Kidonakis

Faculty and Research Publications

I present approximate next-to-next-to-leading-order (aNNLO) transverse-momentum (pT) distributions in single-top production processes. The aNNLO results are derived from next-to-next-to-leading-logarithm (NNLL) resummation of soft-gluon corrections in the differential cross section. Single-top as well as single-antitop pT distributions are shown in t-channel, s-channel, and tW production for LHC energies.

Search For The Rare Decay D^{0}→Γγ At Belle, N. K. Nisar Et Al., D. Joffe

Faculty and Research Publications

We search for the rare radiative decay D 0 → γγ using a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 832 fb−1 recorded by the Belle detector at the KEKB e +e − asymmetric-energy collider. We find no statistically significant signal and set an upper limit on the branching fraction of B(D 0 → γγ) < 8.5 × 10−7 at 90% confidence level. This is the most restrictive limit on the decay channel to date.

Three-Loop Cusp Anomalous Dimension And A Conjecture For N Loops, Nikolaos Kidonakis Feb 2016

Three-Loop Cusp Anomalous Dimension And A Conjecture For N Loops, Nikolaos Kidonakis

Faculty and Research Publications

I present analytical expressions for the cusp anomalous dimension in QCD through three loops in terms of elementary functions and ordinary polylogarithms. I observe interesting relations between the results at different loops and provide a conjecture for the n-loop cusp anomalous dimension in terms of the lower-loop results. I also present numerical results and simple approximate formulas for the cusp anomalous dimension relevant to top-quark production.

Measurement Of The Decay B→Dℓν_{ℓ} In Fully Reconstructed Events And Determination Of The Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa Matrix Element |V_{Cb}|, R. Glattauer Et Al., D. Joffe

Faculty and Research Publications

We present a determination of the magnitude of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |Vcb| using the decay B→Dℓνℓ (ℓ=e,μ) based on 711 fb−1 of e+e−→Υ(4S) data recorded by the Belle detector and containing 772×106 B¯B pairs. One B meson in the event is fully reconstructed in a hadronic decay mode, while the other, on the signal side, is partially reconstructed from a charged lepton and either a D+ or D0 meson in a total of 23 hadronic decay modes. The isospin-averaged branching fraction of the decay B→Dℓνℓ is found to be B(B0→D−ℓ+νℓ)=(2.31±0.03(stat)±0.11(syst))%. Analyzing the differential decay rate as a function of …

Reconciling Ag-Star Formation, The Soltan Argument, And Meier's Paradox, David Garofalo, Matthew I. Kim, Damian J. Christian, Emily Hollingworth Jan 2016

Reconciling Ag-Star Formation, The Soltan Argument, And Meier's Paradox, David Garofalo, Matthew I. Kim, Damian J. Christian, Emily Hollingworth

Faculty and Research Publications

We provide a theoretical context for understanding the recent work of Kalfountzou et al. showing that star formation is enhanced at lower optical luminosity in radio-loud quasars. Our proposal for coupling the assumption of collimated FRII quasar-jet-induced star formation with lower accretion optical luminosity also explains the observed jet power peak in active galaxies at higher redshift compared to the peak in accretion power, doing so in a way that predicts the existence of a family of radio-quiet active galactic nuclei associated with rapidly spinning supermassive black holes at low redshift, as mounting observations suggest. The relevance of this work …
