The addition of a small amount of carbon nanotubes to a polymer matrix can result in large changes in its mechanical properties. In this work, we study the rheological behavior of solutions of polyisoprene (PI) in chloroform and suspensions of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) in these PI solutions using shear rheometry.

We perform rheological measurements to study the viscoelastic properties of solutions of trans-PI in chloroform for polymer concentrations ranging from 1.0 wt% to 10.0 wt%. Thermally ablating meteoroids, colliding with the Earth’s atmosphere, leave a high temperature trail containing extremely energetic metallic ions and electrons. A well recognized, but unresolved, anomaly associated with ambipolar diffusion of meteor trains, which is more dominant in overdense meteors, takes place in the initial post-adiabatic train expansion. In this work, a newly proposed mechanism explaining this anomaly involves hyperthermal chemical reactions is presented. Data from the SKiYMET meteor radar system, deployed at latitudinally dispersed locations, were used to determine ozone density in the upper atmosphere by analyzing diffusion of overdense meteor trains. Amongst various surface modification techniques, hyperthermal hydrogen induced cross-linking (HHIC) has been used to modify the surface of polymeric samples. In this novel and innovative technique neutral hydrogen projectiles with appropriate kinetic energy are produced to generate carbon radicals on the impacted surface through the collision-induced C-H bond breaking. Subsequently, this phenomenon results in cross-linking hydrocarbon chains in the treated polymeric samples.

Optical imaging is a modality that can detect optical contrast within a biological sample that is not detectable with other conventional imaging techniques. Optical trans-illumination images of tissue samples are degraded by optical scatter. Angular Domain Imaging (ADI) is an optical imaging technique that filters scattered photons based on the trajectory of the photons. Previous angular filters were limited to one dimensional arrays, greatly limiting the imaging capability of the system.

Biomineralization is the process by which living organisms synthesize minerals. Some bone-related proteins, such as bone sialoprotein (BSP), have been found to enhance biomineralization, while others, including osteopontin (OPN), act as inhibitors of this process. Dynamic light scattering was used to investigate the effect of several native and recombinant proteins and peptides on the formation and growth of hydroxyapatite (HA) crystals from solutions of Ca2+ and PO43- ions. In this thesis we described inexpensive alternatives to fabricate nanostructures on planar substrates and provided example applications to discuss the efficiency of fabricated nanostructures.

The first method we described is forming large area systematically changing multi-shape nanoscale structures on a chip by laser interference lithography. We analyzed the fabricated structures at different substrate positions with respect to exposure time, exposure angle and associated light intensity profile. We presented experimental details related to the fabrication of symmetric and biaxial periodic nanostructures on photoresist, silicon surfaces, and ion-milled glass substrates. The effects of interface and vacancy defects on silicon quantum dot (Si-QD) growth are investigated using measurements of Time Resolved Photoluminescence (TRPL), Photoluminescence (PL) Spectroscopy and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR). Thermally grown SiO2 thin films (280nm) were irradiated with high energy (400keV – 1MeV) silicon ions in order to introduce defects into the Si-QD growth layer of SiO2. A noticeable increase in PL emission intensity is seen with the highest energy pre-implanted sample over a single implant sample. TRPL results show increased radiative lifetimes for the lower energy (400keV) pre-implant while little or no difference is seen …

Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) is an effective treatment option for patients with inoperable early-stage lung cancer. SBRT uses online image-guidance technology [e.g. cone-beam CT (CBCT)] to focus small-fields of high energy x-rays onto a tumour to deliver ablative levels of radiation dose (e.g. 54 Gy) in a few treatment fractions (e.g. 3). For the combination of these treatment parameters and a low density lung, lateral electron disequilibrium (LED) can potentially occur, reducing lung and tumour doses. Ischemic stroke is often a consequence of complications due to clot formation (i.e. thrombosis) at the site of an atherosclerotic plaque developed in the internal carotid artery. Hemodynamic factors, such as shear-stress forces and flow disturbances, can facilitate the key mechanisms of thrombosis. Atherosclerotic plaques can differ in the severity of stenosis (narrowing), in eccentricity (symmetry), as well as inclusion of ulceration (wall roughness). The normal alkanes are an interesting, both in terms of their intrinsic properties and because many biological materials contain hydrocarbon domains. The normal alkanes often exhibit complicated phase behaviour, with phase diagrams containing multiple solid phases. We report here a curious pattern of twinned domains seen in one phase of tricosane (C23H48), which we have studied by X-ray diffraction, as well as by optical and atomic force microscopy. Chemical shift imaging is a method for the separation two or more chemical species. The cost of chemical shift encoding is increased acquisition time as multiple acquisitions are acquired at different echo times. Image acceleration techniques, typically parallel imaging, are often used to improve the spatial coverage and resolution. This thesis describes a new technique for estimating the signal to noise ratio for parallel imaging reconstructions and proposes new image reconstructions for accelerated chemical shift imaging using compressed sensing and/or parallel imaging for two applications: water-fat separation and metabolic imaging of hyperpolarized [1-13C] pyruvate.

In this thesis, nanophotonic switching mechanisms and light-matter interactions are explored in photonic and metallic heterostructures and nanocomposites. These heterostructures are made using various combinations of photonic crystals (PCs), quantum dots (QDs), and graphene or metal nanoparticles (MNPs).

PC heterostructures are formed by combining different PCs so that photons in a specific energy range can propagate in certain regions along one direction and cannot propagate in others. Positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provide complementary information, and there has been a great deal of research effort to combine these two modalities. A major engineering hurdle is that photomultiplier tubes (PMT), used in conventional PET detectors, are sensitive to magnetic field. This thesis explores the design considerations of different ways of combining small animal PMT-based PET systems with MRI through experimentation, modelling and Monte Carlo simulation. The behaviour and properties of colloidal suspensions strongly depend on the interactions arising between the immersed colloidal particles and the solvent. However, modelling such interactions is not at all straightforward; the larger time and length scales experienced by the colloidal particles compared to the solvent molecules makes all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of such systems completely impractical. Therefore a coarse-grained representation of the fluid is required, along with a method to couple this fluid to the colloidal particles.

Functional imaging holds promise in guiding, evaluating and predicting efficacy of cancer treatment. Perfusion imaging provides high resolution functional information generated by applying a model to a dynamic series of contrast enhanced anatomical images.

The objectives of this thesis are: 1) to develop and validate a registration algorithm to reduce breathing motion artifacts in hepatic perfusion CT, and 2) to evaluate the potential of perfusion CT to improve radiotherapy of liver cancer.

The aim of this dissertation is to clarify the debate over the explanation of quantum speedup and to submit, for the reader’s consideration, a tentative resolution to it. In particular, I argue that the physical explanation for quantum speedup is precisely the fact that the phenomenon of quantum entanglement enables a quantum computer to fully exploit the representational capacity of Hilbert space. The semiconductor and photovoltaic properties of carbon nitride (CNx) thin films prepared using a reactive magnetron sputtering technique were investigated both individually and as composites with the organic conjugated polymers polybithiophene (PBT) and poly(3-hextlthiophene) (P3HT). At low nitrogen content, the film structure was dominated by graphitic sp2 percolation networks, whereas at higher nitrogen contents CNx films started to demonstrate semiconductor properties, as evidenced by the occurrence of photoconductivity and the development of a space charge region. This thesis examines optoelectronics of photonic crystals and photonic nanofibers, especially with quantum dots and metallic nanoparticles doped into them. The simulations produced focus on the quantum dots, which are presented in an ensemble of 3-level systems.

In order to consider a photonic nanofiber in isolation, a model was developed for the density of photonic states. We studied two profiles, a square cross-section and a circular cross-section. In addition, we consider two architectures, one where a photonic crystal surrounds a dielectric fiber, and one where the fiber is another photonic crystal. The purpose of Kohn-Sham density functional theory is to develop increasingly accurate approximations to the exchange-correlation functional or to the corresponding potential. When one chooses to approximate the potential, the resulting model must be integrable, that is, a functional derivative of some density functional. Non-integrable potentials produce unphysical results such as energies that are not translationally or rotationally invariant. The thesis introduces methods for constructing integrable model potentials, developing properly invariant energy functionals from model potentials, and designing model potentials that yield accurate electronic excitation energies. Integrable potentials can be constructed using powerful analytic integrability conditions derived in this work. …
