Metasurfaces For Nano-Illumination In Lidar And Lighting Applications, Sehyeon Kim

Graduate Theses - Physics and Optical Engineering

The development of a non-scanning laser-based imaging lidar system based on a diffractive optical element with potential applications in advanced driver assistance systems, autonomous vehicles, drone navigation, and mobile devices is reported. The proposed lidar utilizes image processing with homography. The emphasis in the design approach has been on compactness and cost of the final system for it to be deployable both as standalone or complementary to existing lidar sensors, enabling fusion sensing in the applications. This work describes the basic elements of the proposed lidar system. It presents the potential ranging mechanisms, along with their experimental results demonstrating the …

Topological Classical Wave Systems With Modulations, Interactions, And Higher-Order Topological States, Mengyao Li Sep 2021

Topological Classical Wave Systems With Modulations, Interactions, And Higher-Order Topological States, Mengyao Li

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Topological phases in classical wave systems, such as photonic and acoustic, have been actively investigated and applied for wave guiding, lasing, and numerous other novel phenomena and device applications Topological phase transitions enable robust boundary states, and the field has been broadening recently into a vast variety of systems with temporal modulations and interactions. Floquet modulation, for example, is the modulation applied periodically in time which may break symmetries and leads to novel topological phases.

Introducing non-Hermitian Floquet modulation enables more interesting phenomena including bandgap in imaginary part of the spectrum and gainy/lossy topological edge states with complex energy values. …

Free-Space Measurements Of Dielectrics And Three-Dimensional Periodic Metamaterials, Clifford E. Kintner Dec 2017

Free-Space Measurements Of Dielectrics And Three-Dimensional Periodic Metamaterials, Clifford E. Kintner

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents the free-space measurements of a periodic metamaterial structure. The metamaterial unit cell consists of two dielectric sheets intersecting at 90 degrees. The dielectric is a polyetherimide-based material 0.001” thick. Each sheet has a copper capacitively-loaded loop (CLL) structure on the front and a cut-wire structure on the back. Foam material is used to support the unit cells. The unit cell repeats 40 times in the x-direction, 58 times in the y-direction and 5 times in the z-direction. The sample measures 12” × 12” × 1” in total. We use a free-space broadband system comprised of a pair …

Control Of Light-Matter Interaction In 2d Semiconductors, Zheng Sun Sep 2017

Control Of Light-Matter Interaction In 2d Semiconductors, Zheng Sun

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In this thesis we discuss the control of light matter interaction in low dimensional nanostructure cavity light confining structures. These structures have controllable dispersion properties through design which can be exploited to modify the interaction of light and matter. We will discuss two different types of light confining microcavities: a dielectric cavity and a metal cavity. The specific design of the cavity gives rise to the confinement of the electric field in the center where the nano-materials are placed. In this work, the main material was on the new class of two- dimensional semiconductors of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Due …

The Study Of Plasmonics In Nanohole Metallic Metamaterials, Kieffer J. Davieau Apr 2017

The Study Of Plasmonics In Nanohole Metallic Metamaterials, Kieffer J. Davieau

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Plasmonics is the study of light-matter interaction. The interaction of incident light (photons) with surface plasmons present in metamaterials results in unique optical properties. Nanohole arrays are a metamaterial consisting of an array of sub-wavelength holes perforated in an optically thin metallic film which resides upon a dielectric material. The interaction of light with the surface plasmons present in the nanohole array leads to extraordinary optical transmission which produces resonance peaks with a higher intensity than the incident light. By changing the physical parameters of the nanohole array, such as hole size and periodicity, the resonance peaks can be tuned …

Wave Propagation And Imaging In Structured Optical Media, Zun Huang Dec 2016

Wave Propagation And Imaging In Structured Optical Media, Zun Huang

Open Access Dissertations

Structured optical media, usually characterized by periodic patterns of inhomogeneities in bulk materials, provide a new approach to ultimate control of wave propagation with possible practical applications: from distributed feedback lasers by diffraction gratings, to highly nonlinear performance for super-continuum generation, to fiber-optic telecommunications by microstructured photonic crystal fibers, to invisibility cloaking, to super-resolution imaging with metamaterials etc.

In particular, structured optical media allow to manipulate the wave propagation and dispersion. In this thesis, we focus on engineering the propagation phase dispersion by modulating the compositions and dimensions of the periodic elements. By tailoring the dispersion in momentum space, we …

Study Of Surface Plasmon Resonance In Metal And Alloy Nanofilms Using Maxwell Description And Metamaterial Simulation In Comsol, Heesoo Park

Graduate Theses - Physics and Optical Engineering

Metamaterials are artificial metallic structures having, possibly, simultaneously negative permittivity and negative permeability which is called a double negative medium. To achieve a visible light range of the metamaterial, the unit cell of the metamaterial units should be 10-200nm. It is a much bigger structure than a size of normal atom. Still, the resolution of fabrication, which is difficult part, should typically be a few nanometers to achieve a nano-level unit. We study Ag thin-film as a convenient candidate for metamaterial over a specific frequency range. Because, the thin film metal is composed of disk shape island structures itself. These …

Quantum Optics Of Polaritonic Nanocomposites, Chris Racknor Apr 2014

Quantum Optics Of Polaritonic Nanocomposites, Chris Racknor

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

In this thesis, we study the quantum optical interaction in polaritonic nanocomposites. These systems are made by the combination of two or more micro- or nano-scale structures with complementary optical properties, such as polaritonic materials, excitonic materials, photonic crystals (PCs), quantum dots (QDs), waveguides, couplers, metal nanorods (MNRs), bionanoparticles. The nanocomposites systems studied included QDs doped within a polaritonic PC, an excitonic waveguide coupler, and a metamaterial waveguide. Also addressed are systems consisting of MNRs paired with biological labelling dye or QDs.

The application of a strain field, known as the acousto-optic effect, was found to control photon transmission in …
