The Nature Of The Heisenberg-Von Neumann Cut: Enhanced Orthodox Interpretation Of Quantum Mechanics, Ashok Narasimhan, Deepak Chopra, Menas Kafatos

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We examine the issue of the Heisenberg-von Neumann cut in light of recent interpretations of quantum eraser experiments which indicate the possibility of a universal Observer outside space-time at an information level of existence. The delayed-choice aspects of observation, measurement, the role of the observer, and information in the quantum framework of the universe are discussed. While traditional double-slit experiments are usually interpreted as indicating that the collapse of the wave function involves choices by an individual observer in space-time, the extension to quantum eraser experiments brings in some additional subtle aspects relating to the role of observation and what …

Respiratory Particle Deposition Probability Due To Sedimentation With Variable Gravity And Electrostatic Forces, Ioannis Haranas, Ioannis Gkigkitzis, George D. Zouganelis, Maria K. Haranas, Samantha Kirk

Physics and Computer Science Faculty Publications

In this paper, we study the effects of the acceleration gravity on the sedimentation deposition probability, as well as the aerosol deposition rate on the surface of the Earth and Mars, but also aboard a spacecraft in orbit around Earth and Mars as well for particles with density ρp = 1300 kg/m3, diameters dp = 1, 3, 5 µm and residence times t = 0.0272, 0.2 s respectively. For particles of diameter 1 µm we find that, on the surface of Earth and Mars the deposition probabilities are higher at the poles when compared to the …

New Insights On Emergence From The Perspective Of Weak Values And Dynamical Non-Locality, Jeff Tollaksen Jan 2014

New Insights On Emergence From The Perspective Of Weak Values And Dynamical Non-Locality, Jeff Tollaksen

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

In this article, we will examine new fundamental aspects of "emergence" and "information" using novel approaches to quantum mechanics which originated from the group around Aharonov. The two-state vector formalism provides a complete description of pre- and post-selected quantum systems and has uncovered a host of new quantum phenomena which were previously hidden. The most important feature is that any weak coupling to a pre- and post-selected system is effectively a coupling to a "weak value" which is given by a simple expression depending on the two-state vector. In particular, weak values, are the outcomes of so called "weak measurements" …

The Fine-Tuning Of Nomic Behavior In Multiverse Scenarios, Max Lewis Edward Andrews May 2013

The Fine-Tuning Of Nomic Behavior In Multiverse Scenarios, Max Lewis Edward Andrews

Masters Theses

The multiverse hypothesis (the view that there is not just one world or universe in existence, bur rather that there are many) is the leading alternative to the competing fine-tuning hypothesis (the laws of physics and constants are fine-tuned for the existence of life). The multiverse dispels many aspects of the fine-tuning argument by suggesting that there are different initial conditions in each universe, varying constants of physics, and the laws of nature lose their known arbitrary values; thus, making the previous single-universe argument from fine- tuning incredibly weak. The position that will be advocated will be that a form …

Bekenstein Bound Of Information Number N And Its Relation To Cosmological Parameters In A Universe With And Without Cosmological Constant, Ioannis Haranas, Ioannis Gkigkitzis Jan 2013

Bekenstein Bound Of Information Number N And Its Relation To Cosmological Parameters In A Universe With And Without Cosmological Constant, Ioannis Haranas, Ioannis Gkigkitzis

Physics and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Bekenstein has obtained is an upper limit on the entropy S, and from that, an information number bound N is deduced. In other words, this is the information contained within a given finite region of space that includes a finite amount of energy. Similarly, this can be thought as the maximum amount of information required to perfectly describe a given physical system down to its quantum level. If the energy and the region of space are finite then the number of information N required in describing the physical system is also finite. In this short letter two information number …

Information-Preserving Structures: A General Framework For Quantum Zero-Error Information, Robin Blume-Kohout, Hui Khoon Ng, David Poulin, Lorenza Viola Dec 2010

Information-Preserving Structures: A General Framework For Quantum Zero-Error Information, Robin Blume-Kohout, Hui Khoon Ng, David Poulin, Lorenza Viola

Dartmouth Scholarship

Quantum systems carry information. Quantum theory supports at least two distinct kinds of information (classical and quantum), and a variety of different ways to encode and preserve information in physical systems. A system’s ability to carry information is constrained and defined by the noise in its dynamics. This paper introduces an operational framework, using information-preserving structures, to classify all the kinds of information that can be perfectly (i.e., with zero error) preserved by quantum dynamics. We prove that every perfectly preserved code has the same structure as a matrix algebra, and that preserved information can always be corrected. We …

Selective Decay And Coherent Vortices In Two-Dimensional Incompressible Turbulence, William H. Matthaeus, W. Troy Stribling, Daniel Martinez, Sean Oughton, David Montgomery May 1991

Selective Decay And Coherent Vortices In Two-Dimensional Incompressible Turbulence, William H. Matthaeus, W. Troy Stribling, Daniel Martinez, Sean Oughton, David Montgomery

Dartmouth Scholarship

Numerical solution of two-dimensional incompressible hydrodynamics shows that states of a near-minimal ratio of enstrophy to energy can be attained in times short compared with the flow decay time, confirming the simplest turbulent selective decay conjecture, and suggesting that coherent vortex structures do not terminate nonlinear processes. After all possible vortex mergers occur, the vorticity attains a particlelike character, suggested by the late-time similarity of the streamlines to Ewald potential contours.
