Axionlike particles (ALPs) are predicted in many extensions of the standard model, and their masses can naturally be well below the electroweak scale. In the presence of couplings to electroweak bosons, these particles could be emitted in flavor-changing B meson decays. We report herein a search for an ALP, a, in the reaction B ±→K ± a, aγ γ using data collected by the BABAR experiment at SLAC. No significant signal is observed, and 90% confidence level upper limits on the ALP coupling to electroweak bosons are derived as a function of ALP mass, improving current …

Probing The Two-Neutrino Exchange Force Using Atomic Parity Violation, Mitrajyoti Ghosh, Yuval Grossman, Walter Tangarife

Physics: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The exchange of two neutrinos at one loop leads to a long-range parity-violating force between fermions. We explore the two-neutrino force in the backdrop of atomic physics. We point out that this is the largest parity-violating long-range force in the Standard Model and calculate the effect of this force in experiments that probe atomic parity violation by measuring optical rotation of light as it passes through a sample of vaporized atoms. We perform explicit calculations for the hydrogen atom to demonstrate this effect. Although we find that the effect is too small to be observed in hydrogen in the foreseeable …

An angular analysis of the decay B̅ → D ∗ ℓ − v̅ ℓ , ℓ ∈ { e , μ } , is reported using the full e +e collision data set collected by the BABAR experiment at the Υ (4S) resonance. One B meson from the Υ (4S) → B B̅ decay is fully reconstructed in a hadronic decay mode, which constrains the kinematics and provides a determination of the neutrino momentum vector. The kinematics of the semileptonic decay is described by the dilepton mass squared, q2 , and three …

We report the first observation of the parity-violating gamma-ray asymmetry Anpγ in neutron-proton capture using polarized cold neutrons incident on a liquid parahydrogen target at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Anpγ isolates the ΔI = 1, 3S13P1 component of the weak nucleon-nucleon interaction, which is dominated by pion exchange and can be directly related to a single coupling constant in either the DDH meson exchange model or pionless effective field theory. We measured Anpγ = [−3.0 ± 1.4(stat )± 0.2(syst)] × 10−8 …

Precision measurements of free-neutron β decay have been used to precisely constrain our understanding of the weak interaction. However, the neutron Fierz interference term bn, which is particularly sensitive to beyond-standard-model tensor currents at the TeV scale, has thus far eluded measurement. Here we report the first direct constraints on this term, finding bn = 0.067 ± 0.005stat+0.090-0.061sys, consistent with the standard model. The uncertainty is dominated by absolute energy reconstruction and the linearity of the β spectrometer energy response.

Evolution Equations For Connected And Disconnected Sea Parton Distributions, Keh-Fei Liu Aug 2017

Evolution Equations For Connected And Disconnected Sea Parton Distributions, Keh-Fei Liu

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

It has been revealed from the path-integral formulation of the hadronic tensor that there are connected sea and disconnected sea partons. The former is responsible for the Gottfried sum rule violation primarily and evolves the same way as the valence. Therefore, the Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi evolution equations can be extended to accommodate them separately. We discuss its consequences and implications vis-á-vis lattice calculations.

Observation Of D^{0}→Ρ^{0}Γ And Search For Cp Violation In Radiative Charm Decays, T. Nanut Et Al., D. Joffee, Ratnappuli L. Kulasiri

We report the first observation of the radiative charm decay D0→ρ0γ and the first search for CP violation in decays D0→ρ0γ, ϕγ, and ¯K*0(892)γ, using a data sample of 943 fb−1 collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e− collider. The branching fraction is measured to be B(D0→ρ0γ)=(1.77±0.30±0.07)×10−5, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The obtained CP asymmetries ACP(D0→ρ0γ)=+0.056±0.152±0.006, ACP(D0→ϕγ)=−0.094±0.066±0.001, and ACP(D0→¯K*0γ)=−0.003±0.020±0.000 are consistent with no CP violation. We also present an improved measurement of the branching fractions B(D0→ϕγ)=(2.76±0.19±0.10)×10−5 and B(D0→¯K*0γ)=(4.66±0.21±0.21)×10−4.
