A Data-Driven Machine Learning Approach For Electron-Molecule Ionization Cross Sections, Allison Harris, Josh Nepomuceno

Despite their importance in a wide variety of applications, the estimation of ionization cross sections for large molecules continues to present challenges for both experiment and theory. Machine learning (ML) algorithms have been shown to be an effective mechanism for estimating cross section data for atomic targets and a select number of molecular targets. We present an efficient ML model for predicting ionization cross sections for a broad array of molecular targets. Our model is a 3-layer neural network that is trained using published experimental datasets. There is minimal input to the network, making it widely applicable. We show that …

A measurement of the differential cross sections for a W boson produced in association with jets in the muon decay channel is presented. The measurement is based on 13 TeV proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.2 fb-1, recorded by the CMS detector at the LHC. The cross sections are reported as functions of jet multiplicity, jet transverse momentum pT, jet rapidity, the scalar pT sum of the jets, and angular correlations between the muon and each jet for different jet multiplicities. Measurements are presented of the cross section for the production of at least four jets, of which at least two originate from b quarks, in proton-proton collisions. Data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV are used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 pb-1. The cross section is measured as a function of the jet transverse momentum for pT>20 GeV, and of the jet pseudorapidity for |η|<2.4 (b jets), 4.7 (untagged jets). The correlations in azimuthal angle and pT between the jets are also studied. The inclusive cross section is measured to be σ(pp→2b+2j+X)=69±3(stat)±24(syst) nb. The η and pT distributions of the four jets and the correlations between them are well reproduced by event generators that combine perturbative QCD calculations at next-to-leading-order accuracy with contributions from parton showers and multiparton interactions. © 2016 CERN.

The cross section for pair production of top quarks (tt) with high transverse momenta is measured in pp collisions, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC with s=8 TeV in data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb-1. The measurement is performed using lepton+jets events, where one top quark decays semileptonically, while the second top quark decays to a hadronic final state. The hadronic decay is reconstructed as a single, large-radius jet, and identified as a top quark candidate using jet substructure techniques. Background: Measurements of forward exclusive meson production at different squared four-momenta of the exchanged virtual photon, Q2, and at different four-momentum transfer, t, can be used to probe QCD's transition from meson-nucleon degrees of freedom at long distances to quark-gluon degrees of freedom at short scales. Ratios of separated response functions in π- and π+ electroproduction are particularly informative. The ratio for transverse photons may allow this transition to be more easily observed, while the ratio for longitudinal photons provides a crucial verification of the assumed pole dominance, needed for reliable extraction of the pion form …

Beam asymmetries for the reactions ˠp -> pπ0 and ˠp -> nπ+have been measured with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) and a tagged, linearly polarized photon beam with energies from 1.102-1.862 GeV. A Fourier moment technique for extracting beam asymmetries from experimental data is described. The results reported here possess greater precision and finer energy resolution than previous measurements. Our data for both pion reactions appear to favor the SAID and Bonn-Gatchina scattering analyses over the older Mainz MAID predictions. Single ionization of the methane (CH4) 1t2 orbital by 54 eV electron impact has been studied experimentally and theoretically. The measured triple differential cross sections cover nearly a 4π solid angle for the emission of low energy electrons and a range of projectile scattering angles. Experimental data are compared with theoretical calculations from the distorted wave Born approximation and the molecular three-body distorted wave models. It is found that theory can give a proper description of the main features of experimental cross section only at smaller scattering angles. Low-energy (E 0 = 70.8 eV) electron-impact single ionization of a 3p electron in argon has been studied experimentally and theoretically. Our measurements are performed using the so-called reaction microscope technique, which can cover nearly a full 4π solid angle for the emission of a secondary electron with energy below 15 eV and projectile scattering angles ranging from -8° to -30°. The measured cross sections are internormalized across all scattering angles and ejected energies. Several theoretical models were employed to predict the triple-differential cross sections (TDCSs). Low energy experimental and theoretical triple differential cross sections for the highest occupied molecular orbital of methane (1t2) and for the 2p atomic orbital of neon are presented and compared. These targets are iso-electronic, each containing 10 electrons and the chosen orbital within each target has p-electron character. Observation of the differences and similarities of the cross sections for these two species hence gives insight into the different scattering mechanisms occurring for atomic and molecular targets. A search for supersymmetry in the context of general gauge-mediated breaking with the lightest neutralino as the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle and the gravitino as the lightest is presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb 1 recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The search is performed by using events containing two or more isolated photons, at least one hadronic jet, and significant missing transverse energy. We have measured the scattering angle dependence of cross sections for ionization in p+H2 collisions for a fixed projectile energy loss. Depending on the projectile coherence, interference due to indistinguishable diffraction of the projectile from the two atomic centers was either present or absent in the data. This shows that, due to the fundamentals of quantum mechanics, the preparation of the beam must be included in theoretical calculations. The results have far-reaching implications on formal atomic scattering theory because this critical aspect has been overlooked for several decades.

The differential cross section for the inclusive production of isolated prompt photons has been measured as a function of the photon transverse energy E T in pp collisions at ffiffi s p ¼ 7 TeV using data recorded by the CMS detector at the LHC. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2:9 pb 1. Photons are required to have a pseudorapidity j j < 1:45 and E T > 21 GeV, covering the kinematic region 0:006 < xT < 0:086. The measured cross section is found to be in agreement with nextto-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations.

Absolutely normalized (e,2e) measurements for H2 and He covering the full solid angle of one ejected electron are presented for 16 eV sum energy of both final state continuum electrons. For both targets rich cross-section structures in addition to the binary and recoil lobes are identified and studied as a function of the fixed electron's emission angle and the energy sharing among both electrons. For H2 their behavior is consistent with multiple scattering of the projectile as discussed before. For He the binary and recoil lobes are significantly larger than for H2 and partly cover the multiple …

A number of previous studies have suggested the possibility of two-center interference effects in the single ionization of diatomic molecules such as H2 and N2. While interference effects have been successfully observed in the ionization of H2, to date evidence for interference in N2 ionization has yet to be conclusively demonstrated. This study presents triply differential cross sections for electron impact ionization of N2, measured using the (e,2e) technique. The data are probed for signatures of two-center interference effects. Evidence for interference manifesting in the cross sections is observed.

We studied the exclusive reaction ep → e' p' ᵠ using the ᵠ →K+K- decay mode. The data were collected using a 4.2 GeV incident electron beam and the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. Measurements were performed for the photodisintegration cross section of the deuteron for photon energies from 1.6 to 2.8 GeV and center-of-mass angles from 37° to 90°. The measured energy dependence of the cross section at θc.m. = 90° is in agreement with the constituent counting rules.

The temperature dependences of the first moments of phonon Raman scattering lines are studied for Fe1-xZnxF2. The diamagnetic dilution diminishes the spin-phonon coupling strength of phonons with both A1g and Eg symmetry in proportion to the decrease in the ordering temperature TN. Moreover, the Eg mode shows an asymmetrical lineshape for Zn concentrations x>0.3. It is explained by an unresolved superposition of two modes, one of which is ascribed to perturbed ZnF2 with broken translational symmetry.
